That was a close one

On Saturday I went out for a couple of hours and discovered that the spinnerbait bite had turned back on.  The second spinnerbait bass was a feisty 2 pounder that really wanted to shake that hook loose.  After I got the hook out I realised that my blades were missing.  Looks like the wire broke just above the knot.

I've had a million spinnerbaits break like this. sometimes i get the top half back and sometimes the bottom.,but I  don't think I've ever brought back 1/2 a bait with a fish still on. That's pretty impressive.

If that was an R wire spinner bait you can stop that from happening.  You can wrap floral wire, heavy thread or braided line around the R portion to keep the wire from separating.  It will exponentially increase the life span of your bait.

I wire mine then use heat shrink tubing to cover it.  I wear out the skirts before I wear out the bait.  I have never had a wire break when fixed this way and the functionality of the bait is not compromised.

I’ve been using the one in the pic for 2 years.  It is on its second skirt.

Thanks Jig Man, I'm off to wrap.  I guess they still bend back if they're wrapped.

I had a lot of them break . Now I retire a spinnerbait before it gets that bad. Being I pour my own its no big deal . Usually between thirty to fifty fish depending on the size of fish caught. If the wire needs straightening out after a slight tussle, its time to retire that bait.

When I'm in FL a spinnerbait catches bunches of mudfish/bowfin/grinnel and usually destroys it.  Bending them back shortens their life and they break like the one you have.
