You guys are so funny. I was fishing and landed 21. I'll post pics in the Latest Catch Pics thread.

 

There aren't many farms in coastal Maine, but I crossed a pasture to reach this morning's pond, so my morning was listening to owls and cows. I baked dark chocolate chip cookies with roasted, salted pecans for the farmer and am returning this afternoon to buy some of their pumpkins.

 

I sound like I live in 1954, don't I?

@ol'crickety so you fished for 15 minutes and decided you caught enough huh?

Ha! They were actually a little tricky this morning, holding tight to a shrubby shoreline. I had to hit the pockets to catch them.

I think you and everyone else knows I am only teasing. You have been extremely dedicated. results like yours only come from dedication.
 

My only jealousy is I haven’t fished since July! Keep up the stellar year. I am living through you and everyone else on BR who is out on the water.

You literally sound like the coolest person I've never met. If I ever move to Maine, I'm going to try very hard to become your friend.

It's Maine that's cool, literally and figuratively. While much of the country was way too hot, we were just right, and Maine has many more bass than people. What's not to love?

I don't know what I'll do when they come to civilize Maine with strip malls and subdivisions. I'll feel like Huck Finn, but with no territory to save me: “I got to light out for the territory ahead of the rest, because Aunt Sally she's going to adopt me and sivilize me, and I can't stand it. I been there before.”

DFW's been expanding since I was born, even in the last few years I have seen a rise in visitors to Roberts. I'm one of those people that remembers when this was all pastures and woods. I hate how the expansion has gone, DFW has done it in the least efficient and least enjoyable way possible. I would leave if I felt like I could

I suffered the same transformation in Columbus, Ohio. There were streams I explored and farm ponds I fished as a kid. I rode my bike to them to catch crawdads, catch fish, pluck apples off long-abandoned trees, and poke under rocks. The city kept expanding and expanding, gobbling one stream and farm pond after another. 

 

Broke. My. Heart. 

 

There are kids who need green to grow. TV kids don't need the green, but some of us do. Just as some adults can't breathe inside drywall boxes.

The entire DFW metroplex is basically some version of this, for dozens and dozens of miles. It could have been done so much better, but single use zoning with huge parking minimums is the primary state of existence around here - leads to enormous parking lots that will never be full, and entire swaths of city without any kind of food options within a reasonable drive, bike, or walk time. It's the dumbest form of development

Aint helping that they're probably black tar and absorbing heat.  No wonder its so d**n hot in Texas.

The reasons for it are complicated - most of the bones, the main arteries of the state were constructed at a time where ranches and such dominated the landscape/development and were the primary vehicle owners in the state - most in the cities didn't need the car until development started spreading outward instead of upward. Now we have a huge influx of population and by the numbers, there could simply never be enough maintainable road to keep the congestion here managed - unless it could be possible for easier walking to be an option for those who could choose to do so
