Smallest Casting Reel for Small Swim Baits

Featured Replies

What’s the smallest size casting reel you’ve put on a MH swim bait rod for throwing small swim baits up to 3.5oz.? Do you absolutely need a 200 or 300 size reel!

200 for me

Curado D 200. Tat 150 works great too up to 3 or so ounces. Some of it depends on what line.

Really a 200 isnt much heavier or bigger then a 150.  The new Curado M look pretty nice, but IME Ive seen Tranx 200s throw heavy plugs, get dropped on jettys and still work with minimal maintenance.

I'd recommend a 200 if you're planning to use use the combo fairly often and want to get at least a few years out of it.

Conquest 200 is a great reel!

A 200 size would be about the smallest I would go. For 2oz and up, I use a Tatula 300 or an old Calcutta 250. I also have an Anteras 200 that I throw big baits on.

The only smaller reel that I have that might work,  would be the Daiwa Coastal 80. It has a larger spool capacity and a 100mm handle.

I have a setup just like you describe except a heavy power rod, for throwing swimbaits 1-3 ounces.  Tranx 200 was the reel I chose.

I debated between 200 and 300 and I'm glad I went with the 200.  I also use mine in the saltwater occasionally for Carolina rigs.

I really like the Tranx, it is a smooth, solid reel.  I was able to put about 150 yards of 17lb mono on it.
