The brightest areas are kind of at the southern end of the native range of many northern fish species and the northern end of the native range of many southern species. So my answer would be an overlap of habitats

Threadfin are the primary baitfish in the Mid South.  They don't like water temperatures

below 45*.

Pay no attention to this people. It's really a map showing the density of the black drum species. 😉

When I first saw this map, I thought it was showing the effectiveness of spinnerbaits in different states.  I do believe both would maps would be almost identical.
