Blackbird86
I usually use white twisters on 1/8 oz jigheads for smallies but i have seen people catch them on live crawlers with a bobber when the lures werent working. What size/style hook would you guys recommend?
MediumMouthBass
Depends, how big are the smallies in your river? Hook size can be anywhere from 4, 2, or 1. If i were using this method id probably use the same hook i use for wacky worms, VMC Neko hook. (comes in size 6-2/0 so you have alot of options) strong hook and tends to not gut hook the bass. And when using live bait for bass they tend to get gut hooked so reducing that as much as possible is why im recommending that hook. Or an aberdeen hook with a baitkeeper if you want to stay on the more budget side. But a shorter jig would probably work better if theres any current. And not sure if you have walleyes where you are fishing but if so youll probably be catching a few of them with those night crawlers. Super User WRB Posted May 4 Super User Share Posted May 4 Hook for live night crawler nose or tail hooked for bass suggest Gamakatsu Octopus light wire circle hook size #2 for medium 4”-5” Canadian nightcrawlers. Bobber casting Thil slip so you adjust the depth that is working. Casting bobbles are also adjustable and adding water increases casting distance. Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted May 5 Global Moderator Share Posted May 5 No bobber required. I put half the crawler on the same jig head you use for mister twister, got this big one and several other nice ones that way. Might have even been my biggest SMB ever

looking45
I would use a circle hook, To lessen the chance of the fish being gut hooked. I would use 2/0

Will Ketchum
Casting jigs over and over gets tiresome and I'm leaning more and more toward bobber and crawler for the river. I'll try hellgrammite and crayfish too. In the right place, you can let it drift into a hole that might have been tough to cast to.

Yes I use them all the time from eagle claw, they seem to cost less on occasion. The paint wears off quickly but they work better for white bass and skipjack in muddy water. Pink and chartreuse. White jigheads with red eyes seem to work very well any time of year with white soft plastics for any species
