In February of 2010 Virginia got back to back snowstorms deemed snowmageddon both dropping double digit snow amounts on the 95 corridor.  200,000 without power, roads impassable.  I was commuting between my house in Florida and my house in Virginia.  I left Florida heading to Virginia in my 3/4 ton SilveradoHD, 4wd truck and about halfway home, my wife called me and suggested I turn around.  I did not.  Everything was fine until I got on the 295 loop to go around Richmond, Virginia and I started seeing cars in the ditch.  When I merged back on 95 north of Richmond it was like a war zone.  Plows trying to clear the snow and ice from the first part of the storms made ice boulders on the interstate and reduced traffic to a crawl or you would literally destroy your vehicle.  My truck was doing well but taking a beating so I dropped it in 4wd and made my way to the shoulder which was just deep snow.  I watched multiple cars behind me try to follow and one by one they got sucked into the ditch.  Due to my trucks higher suspension I was able to get through.  When I got to my exit I had another 30 miles to go so I stopped and topped off my fuel and headed up route 17 which had not even been plowed once.  I was pushing snow with the front bumper of my truck the entire way.  I finally made it to the beginning of my culdesac which descended into a deep valley before going up the other side where my house is.  I literally floored my truck because the valley was almost flat level and I knew it was deep drifted snow.  My truck literally disappeared under the snow bank and I blew out the other side.  I didn’t let off the gas until I slid into my driveway.  That’s my snowmageddon story.

I am one of the weird ones around here that if it snows 12-18" in a day or two I purposely go for a drive just to have fun!

 

I grew up very close to Crater Lake, Oregon.  We would have anywhere from 3' to 10' on the ground during the winter.  Dad used to buzz us over to the school on a snowmobile in the mornings.  Then I moved to Utah for about 6 years and a foot of snow all winter long was normal.  Now that I am living close to Portland, Or...I get a good chuckle every year when it snows an inch and the entire metro area shuts down like the apocalypse was upon us. 😆

 

In all my years growing up, the school was literally never closed for snow accumulation.

A blizzard warning (in Red) has been issued for Calcasieu, Jeff-Davis, and Cameron parishes until 12:00 PM due to winds up to and over 35 mph and snow accumulation of 2-4 inches over the next several hours. Stay sheltered and off of the roads except for emergencies!!

It's been crazy here in Lafayette all morning. I'd thought they may have been exaggerating some of the predictions leading up to today, but I was definitely wrong.

They close schools now if the wind is blowing, somebody must have sued them along the way

I once taught in a school district that never closed for snow. All the surrounding districts would close, but not us. Then came an afternoon blizzard and a school bus was trapped atop a hill. The bus slipped so much going up that the driver refused to drive down the other side. The superintendent and the principals drove to rescue the kids and by the time they arrived, it was dark and the hill was so slippery that they crawled up it to reach the kids to escort them down. After that, guess which district was the first to cancel? 

My mom says their bus driver used to make all the kids get off the bus when he went around the shady side of a mountain where the ice wouldn’t melt. They walked their way around the curve while the bus driver attempted it solo haha

Wow, that's a good bus driver.

We're getting some snow here in Mid- Ga. This is 2.5 hours worth.

We only got 4 or 5”, cleanup was quick which is good as it was -14 here.

Crazy seeing all of that snow in Louisiana and the Gulf of America when we haven't even had a flake yet at my elevation this season. I'm sure that'll change in Feb/March, but I can't say I'll mind the near 70* temps this week.

Shave a zero off that temp for us.

Dropped down to -10 last night in my area.  Space heater has been working overtime.

Yeah it was forecasted to get down to -8 to -10. When I started my truck this morning it was still at -10. Gonna get up to 11 today though so we’re making a nice recovery lol 

Wow, yeah. lol. We might hit a high in the teens today. Wind chills are brutal though at -25+

Most schools here in MN were closed yesterday due to the wind chill.  It was -40 in some locations.  You can't have kids standing outside at 7am in that waiting for a bus.

We hit four below last night (It's still one below at 8:42 a.m.), but I'm on the coast, which warms our weather in the winter and cools it in the summer, so we don't get as cold as inland Maine or even inland NY, as @Jar11591 just demonstrated.
