What knot to use to tie braid to mono/floro?

Featured Replies

What kind of knot do you guys recommend if im trying to attach a florocarbon leader to some type of super line?  Would the blood knot work? thanks for your help!

I was having huge problems with this

I use braid alot but like mono leaders for some applications because they add a little stretch and are low vis.

I experimented with all kinds of different knots. I was using crazy glue on a uni to uni connection and even that failed on occasion.

So far my current knot is the blood knot as demonstrated here

good luck and have fun

I'm with Rolo on the uni knots PLUS add a very small drop of superglue to the superline side.  Without the glue the superline can (and probably will) tighten to the point of cutting the mono/fluoro.  The glue is to prevent the superline from over-tightening (not coming loose).

I'm with Avid here..........I will always use a blood knot to tie braid and mono/fluro together.........It takes a while to master but the knot is VERY strong and will not slip @ all...........

Double Uni knot here (or Uni to Uni). This is the only line to line knot I have used so far. I have had no problems with it yet. I guess when I do I'll start experimenting with some new knots.

When I tie it, I double the braid end and wrap the braid 3-4 more times than I wrap the mono.

Here are some knot tying websites.

The Blood Knot is not good at all for super line to mono or floro leader.  I tried it and had horrible results.  The blood knot works great though for super line to super line connection or mono to floro connection.  In this monthes Salt Water Sportsman, there is a new knot that some captian uses to tie floro leaders to his braided line (I guess he was sick of the double uni knot failing him).  I will post a diagram of this new knot later (if I can figure out how to post images).

I use double (opposing) nail knots. I have a little tool that makes tieing them pretty easy. I have borken the line on both sides of this connection, but never seen it fail. JMHO

Totally agree. Never failed on me...

I recommend an FG knot. There is a knot Assist tool. All the best, john

Alberto for braid to leader, and a double uni from backing to braid mainline.

Double uni is for tying lines of the same diameter. Smaller dia., esp., braid, can cut through single bend of larger dia.

I've beern rolling Allbright knots that shoot through fly rod snake guides for 35 years - no reason to change now.

The key to tightening this knot is remember the direction you wrapped the braid, and roll the loops in that direction as you snug the braid tag. Before it's fully tight, take up all you can on the leader tag. Final tighten standing ends.

Diagram shows 10 + 5.

I tie them 14 + 4. I wet the finished knot with pink Zap CA+

  1. FG Knot; practice, practice, practice.

  2. Alberto Knot; practice. practice.

I know I posted this before but this was the video that taught me how to tie the FG. I had tried a bunch of other videos and had bought the FG Knot Assist Tool but nothing really worked (I am a knot-challenged fisherman). I've tied about 25 knots this winter using this technique and I am confident in it. True test comes next month.

Seldom use a leader but when I do it's an Alberto. Thinking I'll try an Albright as it's a bit easier to tie. My drag is never locked down to the point it'll break my line (or a well tied knot).

This post was worth looking at just to see those first few names from the past...

I use an FG knot for my bait casters and my spinning rigs that don't have Super Slick braid on them. Super Slick is the only line I can't get an FG knot to stick. I use a double-uni for that application.

I have a permanent retina separation issue in my left eye so it’s and eye sight issue more than dexterity.

Surgeons loop on the braid and either uni or trilene know on the fluoro or mono

Makes changing leaders waaay easier for me

Finally took the time to learn FG and use it for everything but not on the boat. It is an easy knot to screw up so I go with the Shin Fukae knot on the boat.
