Spinning combo - line setup

Featured Replies

So I recently purchased a spinning rod/reel for mostly throwing Neko rigs, wacky, and shaky plastics. Most use will be Neko rigs I’m thinking.

Unless someone talks me out of it, I was planning on going with a braid to leader.

The leader I was thinking 8 lb floro but I’m not sure about the braid. Size or brand.

What’s a good line setup? Also what’s a good braid line for spinning?

Rod is a medium power and the reel is a Vanquish C3000MHG.

Thanks!!!

Also, do you prefer a colored braid for this type of fishing?

My current combo that I throw mostly wacky rigs on has yellow line which probably does help me see better.

I've been using 15lb Power Pro Super8slick for spinning and been happy with it.  About the same diameter as 6lb mono/fluoro.   As long as you're running a leader, may as well go for visibility and use a colored braid. I like the lime green.

I use 6lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid for those applications. Can’t stand the lack of slack-line sensitivity of braid for finesse applications.

I'm pretty much totally braid to leader on all my spinning gear. I like any line from YGK, especially Upgrade and Ohdragon.  After some experimenting,  I found PE 1.0 or 1.2 has worked best. For leader,  Seaguar Grand Max and Gold Label 10lb. I also like Daiwa Saltiga Xlink.

Every spinning rig I own is braid to leader

From the MH/F that rated up to 1-3/8oz - 20# 832 to 12# InvizX.

To my UL/F that's rated down to 1/32oz - 6# Revolve to 4# Siege.

C3000MHG comes with a 1215 spool, which the capacity designation is 150 m of PE#1.2.

Diameter for #1.2 is 0.185 mm.

I recommend using that diameter, or using pattaya calculator to stack a slightly thicker backing braid and slightly thinner working braid:

This is JAFTMA chart for JDM braid diameter

I use braid-to-leader on everything, finesse to surf.

I like Sunline products like the Asegai/AMZ in 10/12 # on spinning setups and 7-10 # sunline sniper/shooter for leaders.

20lb white suffix mostly.  8 -10 lb flouro leader.  I like the Daiwa stuff.

I also have one combo spooled with pink Almight line. Braid.  It’s pretty fantastic.  19.5lbs.

My preference across the board is 10# 131 right now.  It’s a great braid across the board.  That;s more than strong enough for any spinning rod I’m throwing it on or cover I’m throwing it into.  it’s just a touch stiffer than 832 which makes the handling just a little better (832 is really light in physical weight in light ratings and the wind blows it around on me).  My only gripe is that it only comes in moss green.  I wish they made it in bright green or orange for line watching.  That isn’t going to stop me putting it on my next rod, but I might wind the last 15 yards of it through a bright pink sharpie when spooling.

Well I really wanted to get line on this today so I went to a nearby fleet farm and bought the 832 in bright yellow. Went with 10 lb.

It was either this or the Smackdown which was a little more expensive. Came in a lime green or something.

I preferred the bright yellow as my eyes seem to be getting worse every year.

that works - spool capacity w/ 10-lb 832 is 140 yds.

Thanks. I wasn’t quite sure how to use the tool you provided earlier. Lol

I’m planning on putting a 15 or so foot leader on it.

no offense, I don't fish that much leader even on a surf rod.

With full-size guides, I fish about a 4' fluoro leader - with micro-guides, 2' leader, so the knot says outside.

I’m 100% braid-to-leader on all my spinning reels. My baitcasters are all mono or hybrid (except my frog rig which is braid) and mono lasts quite a while on those, but I tired of respooling loopy mono on spinning reels. 20 lb. Sufix 832 or Seguar Smackdown and an 8’ leader with 8 lb. mono and I’m good.

The main lake I’ll be using this is pretty clear and gets a ton of pressure.

That’s why I was debating such a long length.

I think 8’-10’ is adequate, depending on rod length. It doesn’t bother me if the leader knot is on the reel as long as it’s on the surface. I don’t want so long a leader that I have the knot under multiple winds on the reel.

I don’t change hooks or lures as frequently on my spinning rigs as I do my baitcasters, but I like enough leader that I can retie or change lures a few times and not worry about tying on a new leader.

One thing to consider is leader length. I would recommend a length long enough to be reeled to the spool when a fish is near the boat (or bank) as to not have the knot exposed while fighting the fish. I typically use one and a half to two rod length as a guide.

Only downfall is having micro guides and not tying a small enough connection knot. With the extra length a poor knot can reduce casting distance more as the cast slows.

I recently got my first nice spinning setup. You won't regret it... I don't know what I've been doing all these years without a good spinning rod on the boat.

I did Sufix 832 20# to 15# flurocarbon. Working great so far!
