Jig rod

Featured Replies

Can’t decide between the Dobyns Champion Extreme HP DX 744C or DX 745C. I’ll be fishing with mostly 3/8oz jigs with a trailer. Around some timber and vegetation.

Don't own any in this series but own several Dobyns rods...IMO the 744 is going to be more of a typical jig / worm rod...good for bottom bouncing a 3/8oz jig with a trailer and maybe coming through some stuff. So if you are looking for a typical open water jig rod that you could use around mild - moderate cover then maybe go with this one. Also most likely a nice big worm rod.

The 745 seems like more of a frog / flip / pitch rod. So if you think you might use it for frogging or if you like to flip / pitch a jig into relatively heavy cover (I prefer a texas rigged creature for this type of thing) where you might be pulling a substantial amount of stuff up besides just the fish then this is the one I'd pick.

I use the 745 for 3/8oz jigs and T-rigs all the time and it’s great for that application.

I only own rods in the Champion XP series but the 744 is great for jigs. Would I flip heavy heavy cover with 1-2oz weights with it? No. But for 3/8 - 3/4 jigs and most T-rigs it's very good, has a nice tip section but plenty of backbone.

If you will be fishing braid I would lean to the 744 but with straight Floro, the 745.

I personally would get a DX744 because I need versatility. With jig specific needs, the 745 is probably the better option.

1/4-3/8 I would use 744

Over 3/8 745 would be my choice

I bought a DX744 specifically for jigs and hated it.  It is a great spinnerbait rod, however.   Tip is way to soft for my jig fishing.

1/4+trailer= 3 power

3/8+trailer= 4 power

1/2+trailer= 5 power

thats my thinking when picking a Dobyns rod for jigs

Or, save the $100 and get a more sensitive/better built Falcon Cara Heavy Cover Jig that still has American customer service up in Oklahoma. 😉 That rod is pretty equivalent to the 744

I use 3/8+ trailer on my 745 all the time. It’s my primary weight. Same with T-rigs. I think it’s perfect.
