All Daiwa Price Increases.

Featured Replies

Figured I’d post this here. He goes over all the items that are getting a price increase and gives the old and new price. I apologize if this isn’t allowed!

EDIT: whoops! Meant to put this in general!

Ouch! On some items, the new prices will make it difficult for some to pull the trigger.

Import tariffs will affect vendors who import commercial volume for retail sales.

They don't affect personal use import up to $800/shipment duty-free.

JDM price increases have Nothing to do with import tariffs, but Japan inflation.

YouTube goober is probably not your top source of information.

That “YouTube Goober” runs one of if not the single largest JDM retail shop in the U.S… just saying.

Tariff fear mongering is the new hot ad campaign. I even saw a Chevy dealership ad saying to "Come get them before the tariffs hit!" LOL

And Top JDM Shop in US (oxymoron) is already marking up 35% over your purchase price in (actual) JDM.

Tariffs will hurt his business, but not yours if you shop in Japan.

Though people I know who import commercial from China and Japan (Shane at Graywolf rods) aren't slowing down a bit over tariffs.

The only YouTubes I watch are my friend Glenn (Prof Salt) and reel take downs.

I do like YouTube Music in my truck.

It's cool if you don't want to watch the video, but maybe don't discuss the video if you haven't watched it.

Saw a video yesterday basically saying that all fishing tackle, rods and reels are in for significant price increases.

@Bigbox99 I've bought a few odds-and-ends from BaitFinesseEmpire and JDMFishing (west coast piecemeal importer) because it was convenient.

adding small tariff to already small item, really wouldn't care

But looking at rod and reel prices - thanks, but no thanks, I'll import my own.

The thing is, I don’t know where to buy a daiwa steez AGS rod other than from American tackle shops. None of the JDM retailers sell it as far as I can tell. Can you help me find one please?

Also, that same YouTuber/tackle shop owner has said Daiwa will discontinue any products that don’t sell well after the price increases. 😔

I expect the steez AGS at $700 will be discontinued for sure.

@Glenn or any other moderators, any chance you could move this to general bass fishing?

I expect everything made in China to get price increases soon unless some kind of trade deal can be worked out. That includes rods, reels, line, lures, terminal tackle and anything else made in China.

Keep calm and purchase P5.

Buy your casting reels by Monday tho.

Nah you can buy from Japan anytime. I try to buy from American shops when the price isn't too far off.

People actually buy Japanese tackle from notJapan and pay huge markup?

Amazing isn't it?  I know one local shop that sells it, and we were actually talking about it when I stopped to drop reels off earlier.  They know I buy right from Japan.  The owner was telling me that over the last couple of years he had been steadily watching his JDM rod and reel sales go down, most likely because people are researching and finding threads like this.  I told him to focus more on the higher end in general.  Typically with USDM fishing tackle, wholesale is usually in the neighborhood of 50% of retail.  Most of what he sells is mid range stuff on the bass end, but his fly fishermen guys come in and drop 4 figures.

Nope. This thread is about rods and reels.  It's in the appropriate forum.

All - you've done a good job of keeping politics out of this discussion.  Let's keep it that way.

Let’s just leave fisherman alone. Mom and Pop bait shops are gonna come to the front. Good thing

Check out Omnia.  They have them for $549 and then 25% off.

It’s also about baits and lines, but ok.

How? I don't see 25% off.

Are you an Omnia pro member? The email I received for the Steez deal says it's for Pro members only, so won't show if not.

You'd be surprised at what fly fishermen buy.  I'm sure @bulldog1935 and @casts_by_fly can relate.  With many of us, the allure is mid to high end Japanese equipment.  With the fly fisherman, it's boutique rods and reels made in small batches.  Fly fishing is a whole different thing as many rod makers roll their own blanks because there is a specific action they are looking for.  With your usual spinning and casting rods, especially domestically made, very few are doing that and using off-the-shelf blanks they can make work for them and their customer.  Shane Gray, owner of Graywolf rods right in my backyard, caters to those fly fishermen and many of his finished products run over $1,000.  Most of the rods he sells are on blanks of his own design, made by him on Steffen Brothers tooling in unique tapers that you just aren't going to find anywhere else.  He uses that same tooling to make spinning and casting rods for trout.  Two of which I own and love dearly.

I was at a Michigan Steelheaders meeting early in June, doing a presentation on BFS.  Roger Hinchcliff, VP of Lamiglas is on the board of the organization.  Roger is also their primary blank designer, having designed the well reputed Closer walleye and steelhead rods.  I took a quiver of rods with me, such as my Smiths, Graywolfs, and a few others.  He loved Shane's work and sat there playing with the rods and taking notes.  Same with the Smith rods I had with me, unlike anything he had ever seen.  He was especially impressed with my 7'4" Smith Troutin'Spin, wondering how a rod that long could be so light.  The beauty of the wooden reel seat was something else he loved, he had never seen anything like it.  When we chatted for a bit after the meeting, I said "Roger, this is what people want.  With American rod brands, everything from cheap to expensive is using plastic.  Surely you can transition away from plastic and build something like this".   Roger is a super nice guy and I feel like he walked away with new ideas after my presentation.  I put the bug in his ear that if he needs somebody to test prototypes, I'd be more than happy to do so.
