Pay $18 for Cork Juice (U-40) or Try Something Else?

Featured Replies

Had a bottle of U-40 cork sealer sitting around for a couple of years. Finally cracked it open—completely dried out. Tried hot water to revive it—nope. Wife says, “Just toss it.”

Tackle Warehouse is out, and Amazon wants $17.98 for what TW usually sells for $7. Do I bite the bullet, or has anyone had luck with alternatives like Kelly’s Cork Renew?

I'd buy it for $6.95 plus shipping ($6 or so) from Voodoo Custom Rods. https://voodoorods.com/t/color-preservers--cork-seal They are just down the road from me and ship out orders the same day. You'll have it in hand way faster than Mud Hole, and way-way faster than Get Bit. 😎

Run to BPS/Cabelas/anywhere that sells guns and grab a bottlw of tru oil by Blackwood Casey. I used it last year and it really good.

I bought and use the U-40.

Not sure if it's going to make much difference.

Every high end rod I bought last year and this year I've put on.

in last 10 years I only finished one and bought the second one last year, So don't bother. It works and worth the money.

Just checked—it's about $3 cheaper than Amazon, but with $8 shipping. I might go that route… unless my wife just says, 'Put it on Amazon!' 😂 Thanks for all the input, guys. Might just wait for Tackle Warehouse to restock, but knowing my luck, that could take forever.

Sorry about that. I just pick up my orders so I wasn't aware of the current shipping costs.

Found a better product than the U-40 which i used to use. Try the Minwax Polyurethane clear in warm gloss. Protects the cork perfectly, and makes it look better than U40. Can be purchased for like $9 at your local hardware stores.

i_fish on YouTube did a comparison on cork sealers.

I had two rods that had some cork needing some care. I grounded up some wine corks, mixed it with wood filler, and filled in the cork holes. Then used U40 as a sealer. I was satisfied with the results.

I never ground up cork and mixed it, but I fill bad spots with Elmer's Golden Oak wood filler, sand to smooth and even, then seal with U40.

Much of the fishing and rod building stuff on Amazon is priced exorbitantly, so I avoid Amazon.  If using polyurethane, be sure to get exterior.  Most wouldn't like poly since it will change the feel of the cork a lot more than U-40.  I personally don't mind harder feeling grips and have even used wrap epoxy on some of mine. l That really looks good with the contrasting look exotic cork rings.
