How To Find out If It Is Mono Or Flouro?

Featured Replies

Guys how to find out about your line if it is monofilament or fluorocarbon? I have top shot on some reel and I am not sure what I have there, Is there any test that we can do to find out?

Cut off a short piece of it and drop it in some water.  If it sinks quickly it's FC,  if it sinks slowly or stays on the surface due to surface tension it's mono.

Floating test should be enough. If not in some cases, you can also use burning test: fluoro thread will burn quickly without leaving much residue or ash.

I like this.  Or cut off a piece, tie it to a post/tree/etc. and break the line.  If it looks like sheet, then it's fluoro.

Interesting. I didn't know about the burn test.

The float test would be a good indicator for sure.

That said, what about if it’s an fc coated mono or some other mix with fc.

I reckon it would indicate fc is in the line but won’t necessarily confirm it is pure fc.

I know , it’s not even winter yet, but my mind is always on, lol. 😂

Have any of you actually done the float test?

Yes,  I can't say I was surprised by the results.  I drop about a 1 inch piece of FC in a glass of water and it sank quickly to the bottom.  I did the same with mono,  it stayed on the surface due to surface tension.  When I pushed it under the surface with my finger,  it slowly sank to the bottom.

I pushed both of mine under the surface to break surface tension and they both sank.  Not what I expected.

Yeah, mono actually sinks as well, just a little slower, which is good enough for topwater presentation. I guess that's why some people use the burning test instead. Give it a try, and you'll see the difference is quite clear.

I hadn't thought about needing to determine difference between lines before, but good advice.

For me, I don't have that issue because all of my mono is low vis green and all my flouro is obviously clear.

I can tell what type of line is on any of my reels from 10 ft away.

If you have money  left in the bank it is mono, if you are broke it is fluorocarbon.
