Black bladed bladed jig?

Featured Replies

Several years ago I ordered some new lures from Bass Pro, one being a Green Pumpkin color. I didn't realize when I ordered it that it has a black blade. My question is, when would I throw this color/blade combination...conditions, water color, etc? Thanks in advance.

Anywhere that I would throw any other color. It is (for me) a better choice if you are trying to imitate a bluegill.

Like many baits that offer a variety of options,

In my experience, each of these baits appears to have its own optimal time and place for use.

For the longest time I only fished the dull painted blades.  GP & Black.

But have since ventured into the 'flashy' deals (silver & gold)

and have been pleasantly surprised with the results.

Unfortunately, pike are also big fans, especially when I don't use a wire leader.

The amount of colors you have is wild! Each one has a time and place? I would feel overwhelmed having so many choices. Couldn’t you technically get away with less colors by consolidating similar colors?

I have been fishing for almost 60 years.

During that time I have developed my own 'style' if you will.

Part of that is figuring out what I do best, which baits work for the waters I fish, as well as where and when to use them.

Having a variety of options allows ample opportunities to broaden my bass fishing horizons.  I am always learning. Finally, 'getting away with less' will never be part of anything in my life, especially something that I am so passionate about.

YMMV

Thanks guys. Just realized in my original post I said I ordered "new lures from Bass Pro, one being a Green Pumpkin color" but neglected to say it was a bladed jig. Thanks again.

I don’t think I have any green pumpkin baits that don’t have a black or painted blade. I’m imitating a bluegill/sunfish/baby bass when I’m using it and they aren’t flashy.

Most bluegill pattern bladed jigs used to have gold and some had black painted blades, straight GP had a dark nickel blade, usually.  The vast majority of the time, I would color the blade with a black sharpie because I didn't want that flash, unless it was dark and or really windy.

The higher quality bladed jigs in dark colors have dark painted blades now.

I have been known to take a sharpie and color my blades black on my bladed jigs.

I'm seriously considering doing this on my bladed jigs that have been chipping away, how long does this last?

dang A-Jay.  that is a great looking line up!

I gotta ask.  did you take the pic for this discussion or was it already in your photo inventory?  I've never really taken pics of my lures..

I love black bladed chatters.  all of my early experiments have been with a black blade.

Thanks.

It was set up and taken as a topic specific presentation. I'm sort of zany like that.

Along with a jerkbait, this deal is big fish producer on just about every Lake Menderchuck I fish.  Especially early and later in the season.
