Pistol grip rods??

Featured Replies

I'm sure I'm one in a million, but I wish someone would release a 6' 2-4" pistol grip casting rod to be able to use for pinpointing cast around docks and lay downs. Am I the only one that wants this?

And dozens more if you include separate grips and ferruled rod blades made by Bright River, Robelson, etc.

There's also Aioushi on Express website, and LureSport where you can buy inexpensive components to make your own.

Even carbon weave.

The 80s called. They want their fishing rod back lol. In all actuality what part of NC are you in? I am in WNC. I have a Zebco Rhino M/H with a pistol grip you can have. It's a 5'6 but it's yours if you want it.

That's what I learned on but nowadays I like extra Butt.

It's very difficult to 2-hand cast with pistol grip.

Don't we all.

Thanks for the offer, but I have some 5' 6"s. There is something to be said about a shorter rod for making accurate casts. I think close quarter accurate fishing is becoming a thing of the past. I am finding out that to the fish in my area what is old is new. I consider myself in Western NC even if the maps don't. LOL!

Yes. 😆

I figured. 🤣 Seems like the modern angler has been led to believe that if the rod isn't over 7ft long and the reel has less than 30" IPT you just won't be able to get the job done.. My PB over 7lbs was caught with a slow gear ratio BPS Rick Clunn reel on a 6' medium power Renegade CyberStik from Walmart. The reel had 12 pound test line on it and I was throwing a Bandit 200 crankbait. Caught it up in a river against the current and had no problems getting the fish in the boat.

Oh don't get me wrong, I grew up on pistol grips. monofilament, and round 4.6:1 "fast" reels. LOL

I prefer today's equipment. Those pistol grips wore my wrists out.

I totally agree with you on them making your wrists tired. There are some things that they can do that the longer rods with longer handles can't. Nothing like throwing a spinnerbait into lay downs with one. I feel like it's one of those rods that you have to have in your boat. You might not throw it all the time, but there are situations where nothing else will do. My thought with making one just a little longer than 6 foot would be to create a modified pistol grip. Somewhere between the old BPS power humps and a traditional pistol grip. That might be easer on the wrists.

Something like the Daiwa Team S Jerkbait/Topwater rods perhaps? I really like mine. I'm not sure what I'll do if I ever break it. Those six foot, give or take a few inches, jerkbait rods are not so common anymore.

I buy Abu round reels. I've got probably 30 or so functional ones and probably 50 or so in a bucket that needs parts or reworked.

Odd attitude for someone buying up 80 Ambassadeurs.

I never had a use for pistol grips, but the offset reel seat on separate grips reach perfectly on medium-frame Ambassadeur

The parts are out there to make these original 3/8-oz low-end reels fish 1/8 oz all day.

My raciest '77 4500C with ceramic-bearing upgrades to the LW upgrades will throw 3 g to 150' on 6-1/2' 2-hand rod

Feeble attempt at humor I guess. I'll go back to my corner now.

Christmas of '22, a few of us bought these 6' M clearance lightning rods. Fun rod to handle.

I have 2 older 5'6 St Croix rods I built with pistol grips. Haven't used them in years. I believe they are SC II or III rod blanks. I believe I made them in mid-90's with fuji concept guides.

Not sure I'd go back, but who knows. Idontknow

Someone correct me if I’m nuts or help verify I’m not, but didn’t someone possibly BPS make a pistol grip with a split grip that extended out of the pistol grip? I believe it was around the time of the Woo Davies rods🤔 I’m going to have to look through my old BPS catalogs.

Now that's something I could get behind.

Not the pistol grip though...

I grew up using pistol grip rods. As a matter of fact I have two 5' 6" Ugly Stiks in my barn with pistol grips that haven't been used in years. I will say my casting accuracy was better with them as they were shorter and as someone already mentioned, they were harder on the wrist than the new long handles.
