Think there are only 3 bass species? New genetic research reveals over a dozen black bass species including largemouth, Alabama, Neosho, and shoal bass.

According to this video from Shoal Bandit, there are 19 recognized bass sunfish species. To be clear, what we call "bass" are not bass at all, but sunfish. True bass are stripers, white bass, and perch

You mean Glenn, the guy that owns this site, who tries to get true bass professionals (whether tourney pros, practicing biologists, or others) to share their knowledge for the benefit of the people that come here?

It’s not an airport. You don’t have to announce your departure.

Cussing is filtered....

As CbF said....just stop logging in and fade into the woodwork.

Re: the vid link....all bass are sunfish, but not all sunfish are bass...and no @gim , I don't want the schpeal on 'Rock Bass' (again)...they're a sunfish despite the name.

Hmmmm....all I did was ask a question, because he literally repeated some of the things the article said, but made it sound like he had some insider info.

Just a slight overreaction.

Anyway, back to the article - it's about NEW information about bass species discovered through recent genetic testing. Some of what you thought you knew a few years ago...what was "known" by experts and biologists....was wrong.

Now that was quite funny. 😄 life is so tough and someone gets upset with what’s a sunfish. Kind of sad if really think about it!

As always, like your articles and videos @Glenn .

I didn’t see any mention of the peacock bass, which is on my bucket list.

Does anybody know what part of the family it is?

Peacock bass are in the family "Cichlidae" who's members include aquarium Angelfish. They're not part of the sunfish family at all.

Peacock close relative.....

@Hartwood71 what color is that? I looks like a ribbon or curly tail.

Im going along the tamaimi trial in June, hope to catch one then.

Berkeley blue fleck ribbon tail 10” with 1/8 bullet, unpegged. 2’ of water in some light bullrush grass. 17lb mono. In Southern Palm Beach County.

Enjoy that trip. Peacocks there for sure.

I would love to catch these other bass. Here is MN there are only smallmouth and northern large mouth. I am think next year bass trip might go to TX for a Guadalupe bass. Might stop on the way in MO and AR and get one of the new species!

The lakes in Weston Florida are full of Peacock. I could show you a bunch if I could figure out how to post a pic!

I was glad to read the doctor who wrote this article included all the latest genetic research ongoing here in Florida.

I had my Florida list out and cross comparing it with the article to see if he was going to miss any and pleasantly surprised he didn't.

I shared this article with my son so he could learn about the different species and make it a point to maybe try and catch one or more of each specie throughout his lifetime. So this article has served its purpose in teaching the next generation. Thanks for posting it.

Cool article! If you're feeling particularly sciency, the study from 2022 mentioned in the article is open access and available to read for free:

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-022-11743-2

It was the first time anyone had done contemporary state-of-the-art genome analysis of black bass, sampled from across their entire natural range.

Wow a lot of good info in that article on types of bass!
