High end frog rods

Featured Replies

What options are out there? I always hear about the Expride 7’3XH and Megabass Destroyer Poker, but what else is worth taking a look at?

Does it have to be high end?

I say this because I also love "high end" rods, but frogging is not a technique where I really care, or where it really matters to me if it is a high end rod because I am kind of abusive on my frogging rods in Florida's heavy cover.

A "heavy/fast" broomstick is a heavy/fast broomstick in any brand really. Sensitivity not required. Strong hook setting and leverage are more important to me.

I want to be able to yank on it if necessary to get it unsnagged or pull a bass out of that heavy cover, and not worry about breaking a $400 rod. So frogging is one of those techniques where I do dedicate a rod or rods to that technique that are used for nothing else.

Presently the rod I have a frog tied onto is one I got in a used tackle deal cheap. Its a rod I normally would not have gone out to buy or even look at for this technique, but once I got it in a bundle deal and had it laying around looking for something to use it for frogging has become its perfect fit.

Its a Daiwa AIRX701HFB. Its only a 7 footer but works very well for me. You can get these in longer models if needed. I have been really impressed with the backbone this rod has. And for a $50-$60 rod ya can't beat it for the price.

And if I break it I can shrug my shoulders and move on without crying about it. Besides, I only paid $5 for it used like new, and I love it for froggin'. A perfect fit for me.

But if you really want higher end frogging rod....

Saw that, it’s actually made by legit design. Seems a little short for a frog rod though. I should probably just get the expride but I already have the 7’2H expride (current frog rod) I just want something with more power. It would make sense to get the 7’3XH expride because I know I’ll like it, just a bit boring compared to potential other options.

I'm with FloridaFishingFool on this one. I use 2 ARK Lancer Pro's 7'2" Hvy/Fast, got them on the BOGO Deal. They're in my Florida Kit and if I blow one up, I'm out $50. They're both strong, sensitive, comfortable, and will launch Frogs. They don't make Dudes at the ramp swoon with a $250-$400 price tag, and a high end name. But they work, day in and day out, and I don't spare the whip!! Brian.

Nothing wrong with a nice rod for frogs. I have a couple:

Megabass Black Jungle Power Versatile: dope. Fishes a little long, since it has a shorter handle. Mat frog rod. Hard to find, and there are more refined options since the 2016 Black Jungle series.

Megabass Valkyrie 71H: dope. Don't let the glass composite fool you; power to set but bend to keep them pinned under the pads. Down-wrapped guides are awesome. Little clunky to walk but not bad. Hookset and landing performance makes up for it. Possible to still find one, but again, more refined options are available.

X10 Swamp Survivor: dope, now with organic fibers. This doubles as my short punch rod. Best for a larger frog, but will handle a Scum Frog Launch 🐸 just fine. X10 in general needs more love.

I've left out the P5 Super Destroyer and similar since you need more power. Super Destroyer does a Hell of a job with a Kaera though. Also some may suggest X10 Bushadder; I find the tip too soft and the bend too deep; struggled with hooksets. Great big treble and dragging rod though.

The thread may now return to posts about how you don't need a nice rod to frog with.

I tried high end rods for frogging but I always come back to an old Shimano Convergence seven footer in MH. I don't have those immense fields of grass where I frog fish (Canada) so I need precision more than brutal strenght. I fish those little dock corners where a bit of grass grows and where blow-by accumulates. The frog need to drop exactly where I want so a rod with a bit more tip is OK. The convergence still has the backbone needed.

I prefer a little shorter and the Cara eye crosser is my favorite. Just light enough tip for 1/2 oz frogs on 50 braid but a bunch of horse to get them out.

I’m not sure if this is bougie enough for what you’re looking for (no judgement, I too fish several top tier setups) but my primary frog rod is a Dobyns DC 736C. Everything you need in a frog rod, and it’s also a fantastic flipping and pitching rod for when you need to invade the muck. It’s considered to be one of the better sticks they produce for good reason. It never leaves me wanting for anything more.

I got an Irod gen 3 freds magic stick on a really good sale and it’s been rock solid going on two years now and I’m not gentle with my gear at all 😂😭

Catching the silver fishy is what excites me the most, how it happens and what with is way down on the list, my frog rod is on the Castaway blanks when you could get them through Swampland. I custom built them using the bare minimum of components and ornamentation to get them light as possible, I changed the color of the hook keeper wraps to identify the rods quickly, it's a great rod for frogging, but not exciting in any way to look at.
