Your SV103 reels keep getting better and better!

Where did you get those bumpers for that reel?

The star fell in my lap for cheap, so I couldn’t pass it up. They were sent out to be anodized orange. Pricey, but they add a nice touch.

They sure do.

Got the Tatula 100XS today and opened it before Christmas. It’s definitely ?

Ive been waiting a good 15 years for this reel. All around amazing feel. Just hope it fishes well on a rod. The round gear box is somewhat strangely oriented, but everything else appears too well put together for the price.

My first impression is this is what the Smoke should have been. And it smells like a different oil than anything else I’ve ever smelled. More like a synthetic or Teflon smell, like a fresh no stick frying pan set.

The stuff is always the easy part. Getting the fish is another story.

I’m so in love with the cast control knobs on these reels. Waiting on purple ones to match the SV XS reels.

Me too, kinda. I converted my Tatula CT 7 speed from red to purple. I just need to order a purple magforce dial, since that’s the last red part on the reel. But I cant find them online now. I finally got the black spool tension dial with tatula spider on it about 2 weeks ago, after waiting over 6 months for it on pre order. It just won’t be done until that red magforce dial is replaced with a purple one.

I have to admit I've never factored the aroma of a reel into my purchase. Mine smelled like Vick's Vapo Rub.

Mine generally smell like Japanese news papers.

We heat our house with a woodstove and the "paper basket" seems to have more and more Japanese news papers it it every year.

Speaking of Japanese newspapers, this showed up today from Japan.  Some will know what’s so special about it.

Sure thing!  That spool can fetch some serious $$$!

Hey @rippin-lips, have you ever posted a picture of all your setups at once.  I would be very interested to see that.  While I am more of a lews fan, I have to admit I really dig your customized reels.

I have not done a group photo. Looking at my reels it seems that at least all but maybe 1 or 2 have been posted at some point or another. 4 of them in the last few months for sure.  Nothing wrong with Lews at all. I actually started buying Lews after my first casting reel which was a bps pq. All of them treated me very well. I just got sucked in to Daiwa because of the customization aspect of it. Coming from a background in cars as a hobby it just appealed to me.

Yeah I understand, If I had the money to be doing the customizations and stuff you do, trust me I would be a Daiwa fan.

That’s a rabbit hole that you don’t want to go down.

If you sit around all winter playing Alan Tani with your reels, you start to get used to the smell of all the different greases and oils.....

Well that escalated quickly! If you have a special spool, it deserves a special reel to be painted up.

I’m pretty familiar with painting things. It’ll be done with primer/base/clear just like a car. Obviously a little different than a fender or door, but it’ll be fine. Good prep work is the main key. Crappy prep equals crappy end results.

This is why I am not to be trusted for anything more complex then a very small room with minimal windows and trim.  Can't wait to see what you do with it.

This is the combo and lure I am devoting this winter to:

mwJNLGYh.jpg

Rod is a Dobyn's FR795SB, Reel is an SSS Ringa with 6.8 gears, a Zillion sv spool, carbonex drag, and a big fat power handle.  The lure is the ever wonderful Hudd 68 Special ROS 5 in Phantom Rainbow.

The plan is to try and spend an hour or two every other day throwing it in a few of my local ponds.  They are all places I know hold reasonable numbers of 3-4lb class LMBs and I want to see if I can find a larger on in any of them.  So far I am 1 Hudd down and have had maybe one bump in about 6-7 trips.  Right now I am throwing them on .40 mono but am thinking about switching to braid to get me a little more bottom-feel, if only to help keep me focused.

I love the ringa. Such a nice looking reel. I really like how it’s raw and has that feel of being just a machined piece.

I know, I love it so much.  Bought it on a whim to try out a round reel and have fished it on about 5 different rods and it was amazing on all of them, from a 3oz swimbait to a weightless senko.  With a 1012 sv spool it could cast a weightless trick worm pretty well, but it was obviously at it's lower limit.  If I ever see an other one for a good price I am going to jump on it.

The only bad thing I will say about it is that it is sensitive to spool inductor height, so a lot of spools will not work in it.  The stock sv103 spool being just ever so slightly too long and the ZPI PG spool being obviously too high.

You do have to be careful on spools. I had the 1012sv in my mono block and it was great. Furthest casting reel I had using a weightless senko. SV103 spool stinks so you aren’t missing anything there. Far too much braking on it. You can always swap out to a shorter inductor so it can be used. Zillion 1016sv has the short inductor and has impressed me in any reel I’ve tried it in so far. The Zpi M spool has a shorter inductor vs the PG also.
