Hey Fellas; I started to look into jigging last season. LBH made a video of how to, Catt,Alpster and Zel led me through the paces.

Catt tired to get me to step up form a weighted T rig first, never got the hang of that part, however what he sent me and the knowledge those four  shared with me have paid off this season.

All my better fish and I was taking fish when others werent were all on jigs! I have not been doing the flippin and pitchin deal. Just deeper water and structure ( mostly 8 to 15 ft of water) and the Pop and drag retrieve Russ showed has been deadly. Thanks to all

Hey Olebiker< I cnnot speak for the others. In the long run I did not like the "prepared" jigs, with the skirts and weed guards

 I have found several different types of jig heads that I put plastic trailers on and I try to rig the t rigged. The palstics I use are: All from ***: *,4.5in Beaver Craws and Brush Babies. Once I learned how to detect a bite, and I STILL HAVE A LOT TO LEARN, I got more hook ups.

 As for the other kind of jigs, I am sure other Fellas will give you an answer

I don't shorten.  I spread 'em.  Hook set,  hook set,  hook set.

I don't shorten them, I cut "em off entirely. I'd never caught many fish on a jig, despite repeated efforts. Once I started cutting off the weedguards, I started catching fish.

I think the weedguard is just one more negative cue that you can dispense with.

I have a completely different take.

In addition to reducing hang-ups, full length, heavy weedguards discourage tournament bass.

The bigger bass are totally unaware of the guard and it never interfers with the hook-up.

I don't make any adjustments.

I trim the guard even with the straight part of the hook, before the tip. Then I spread it out well.  Then I trim the length of the skirt and lastly,...thin it out,...alot

3/8 oz Evolution Jig

1/2 oz GMAN Jig

1/2 oz Micro Munch Tackle Jig

My #1  trailer is the GYCB Flappin' Hog followed closely by the Paca Craw Baby Craw

I check the weedguard to make sure it is correct. Meaning is the angle going to interfere with hookups? On some cheaper jigs the weedguard stand up at a angle that makes it hard to bend over without a lot of force. I push the the weedguard a couple of times to make sure it bends down and nothing would obstruct a hookset. For those of you who cut the weedguard shorter you are actually stiffening it? If you want a light guard cut some of the strands frm THE BOTTOM of the weedguard. Larger fish have no problem with even the stiffest weedguard on a flipping jig.

this could be due to line ,,, you dont want to use a lite line or mono ... the strech in mono can hinder hooksets .... i like 15lb cxx for jigs ...

also the rod has alot to due with it ... i use a avid or ltb 7ft med hev fast action rod ,,, this is a stout rod by most standards ...  then comes the hookset ,,, you wanna slam that hook home ...  

  good job muddy ... the jig isnt the easiest bait to use ,,, but well worth it when you do learn ... heres somthing to chew on most of last years elite series were won with a jig .... you may say why ,, well i do believe you catch bigger fish with a jig ... also the jig is one of the most well rounded baits out there ,,, season doesnt seem to matter ... the olny other bait that is as well rounded IMO is the spinner bait ... so keep at it ,, the jig is always my first choice and i always have 1 tied on ...  ;D
