Ever seen a bass like this....?

Recommended Posts

I caught this bass a while ago but this thing has the strangest shape I have ever seen!

The fish weighd about 3lbs. but had this huge head and very short body. Ever seen anything like it?

I never caught another that looked like this one, in this lake or any other.

Yes I have. The bass is "stunted" probably due to overcrowding: too many bass in that particular body of water. More commonly they just have a full grown head and very little body.

"stunted"

So do you think he did flips or something while jumping out of the water? Maybe played chicken with a boat? Dang kids, they never listen... ;D

When bass "stunt" here, it means that there is not enough food and the general population remains tiny.  4-7 inches or so.  There will be NO 3 lbrs.

This guy looks like some fine azz genetics are at work.  He's a muscle packed bull dog!

Like I mentioned above, this is the only one I ever caught that looked like that. The lake I caught it in has very few bass in it. You can also see that the fish is very fat so there was no lack of food.

Other fisherman that fish that particular lake also told me that they never caught one that looked like that. The head and tailfin on that fish are normal size, it's just the body that is "too short".

I agree! ;)

It almost looks like a bit of a hybrid/white bass in the middle. Take the fish to the marine biologists to see if its a new species...

It's gonna be difficult to catch him again! ;) ;D

It's definately not a new species but just like LBH said, some kind of genetic adaptation.

i caught a simular looking bass, looked like a cross between a crappie and a bass....real short, almost a panfish shape.....

this one is a little different.....

could this be a hybrid???

No hybrid unless bass recently startet mating with carp. ;D ;D

The only other fish in that particular lake are barbel and carp.

No panfish at all.

My guess is that the fish was injured when caught previously in its life.  Earlier this year I caught a bass that looked like its back had been broken in 2 places.  Aside from looking a little more like a boomerang, it looked a lot like that fish:  short and fat.  It weighed about 3.3 lbs.  I wanted to weigh that fish in the tournament just so other people could see the freak show, but I wound up culling it out...

I agree that it doesn't appear to be a lack of food, but don't understand why the head is so big if there not some form of stunting going on.  Maybe he had a tough life and has since recovered.  I think a lot of your pics look funny.  There all chunks.  Not fat though.  Always appear excessively muscled.  Is there any HGH controversies over there. ;)

No HGH as far as I know. ;D That fish was caught in southern Spain which has very similar weather and reservoirs like in Cyprus.

The bass in Switzerland are pretty fat, I find.

That's one of the reasons bass are so awesome - they can live almost anywhere in almost any conditions and just adapt to them.  Those are some funny lookin' bass  ;D

Vyron, your friends fish doesn't look anything like the one I caught, it's just a fat and muscular fish. Pre-spawn?

The one I caught has strange short body and was caught after the spawn.

Not to try to be funny here but can't all animals get the gene that causes dwarfism? Most little people in the human world have a normal head size but the lower body is smaller. Just a thought. :-?

Both bass look like northern strain largemouth bass, big heads and little bodies are common when prey fish cycles are up and down. For a bass to have a long frame it needs the genetics, just lke all animals no two are exactly the same unless they are twins. Different yes, freaks no. Both bass look very healthy and where feeding well in the latter part of their lives and possibly not too good a few years back.
