Just do what everyone else does, proceed to catch 3lb fish, hold it, than say yup, this one will go 7lbs easy! Take picture, post to Outing forums and say something like GREAT DAY, 10lb LMB...................................... :-?

no one needs a scale unless your trying to prove something to someone else, or your self for that matter........

if your gonna post here, and state a weight for the fish.... you'd better have a scale, bc i personally dislike the over guestimate game......

but honestly, a big fish is a big fish.......some people dont care about an exact weight, albeit most of us do.

so you dont need a scale to catch fish or large ones for that matter, and in that respect alone no one should be bashed for it......

but if your gonna try to show something off here, or to yourself......

then yes...... just buy one already.

Well I get irritated for the following reasons:

1. "Jake"- I caught 3 5lb bass today!

Robby- Yeh did you weigh them?

"Jake"- No I just know how big they were.

2. My own curiosity. For example today I saw a fish picture in the northeast category and wonder to myself how big is that fish!? The bass looks like it swallowed a basketball. Sometimes you can estimate the weight, but when it is so oddly proportioned I am lost.

I like the technique of holding the fish out at arms length, using a wide angle lens to change the perspective.  My first thought is usually "wow, that guy has huge hands".

Jeez, doesn't anyone fish just to have a good time anymore ? All of this obsession with weight is ridiculous. "My scale is accurate within 1/1000th of an ounce" "No way that fish is five pounds" blah blah blah. Enough already.

If you catch a fish that made your day, congrats ! The weight is irrelevant. Post a pic, be proud of your catch. And get back on the water for more.

I used to have one of them cheap, inaccurate spring scales but haven't seen it in years.  The only time I remember using it was on a 22" I caught who was very lean...the scale put her at just under 4lbs.  The only other fish I weighed was a 20.5 which I took to the post office and laid it on their scales.  That one was 5.76lbs and I had it mounted (back in '92) as it was the biggest bass I'd ever laid my hands on.  No others have been weighed and every bass since then has gone back in the drink to catch another day.  My other two "big" fish both measured 21" but I've no idea on their weight.

Not a rant but a chuckle.......People that regard a tenth of an ounce as a life or death situation.  Does depression set in if your bud caught a 5.2 and you only got a 5.1?

This thread did give me a chuckle or two! ;D Anyway, I do carry a scale, for only one purpose. To confirm to myself, that I have caught and released a smallmouth bass over 5 pounds. Hasn't happened yet, but I'm working on it. Been working on it for a lot of years too!

I do laugh when I see the TV stars holding their fish out to the camera at arms length. Who do they think they are kidding? Same with forum photos. If you are holding it out, you have only one objective. To make it look bigger than it actually is....period.
