I've Always Wondered...

when you guys were younger

did you ever have trouble trying to find someone your age that bass fishes?

being 15, turning 16 in august, i find it hard to find someone my age that actually bass fishes, let alone fishes in general

i live here in Los Angeles and well it's tough finding someone that does lol!

did many of you ever have a fishing buddy your age?

or just fished by yourselves with a parent or other adult?

I grew up in a rural area - early to mid 60's. There was a guy in my same grade at school who lived roughly a mile away. That's primarily who I fished with. I didn't have a whole lot of adult supervision when I grew up. I didn't need that much. I knew that if I broke anything or caused any trouble, that my dad would probably smack me around after the fact as soon as he sobered up. Therefore, I took precautions to (a) avoid trouble and (B) not get caught when I did.

Yes.. I imagine it's even harder now as the amount of kids I see fishing shrinks. When I was younger I had a few people, I could usually scrounge up one to fish with. I fished with my dad and grandpa tho for the most part. I mostly fish now with a guy Ive know since High school.

All my buddies fished when I was your age and that was 9 years ago there was 4 of us that if we wernt sleeping or in school we were below the falls in town with a cut off bottle of mt dew filled with craw fish we caught catching smallmouth all day everyday. Iv actually found it harder now to find people to fish with all my friends are gone but a few and they stoped fishing. My 17yr old nephew got into parting so he doesn't fish much either with me anymore. J Francho was the last person I fished with that was into fishing as much as I was most people I try taking can't keep up

I hear what your saying! It really is tough, but in high school and now college, I have co-founded/joined bass fishing teams/clubs. See if you can put up some fliers at school and get a little group together! You would be surprised how many people show up, and how great of friends you will become with them.

Although I grew up in a New Jersey suburb, I was in my teens during the 1950s.

That was an era when fishing, hunting and drinking all enjoyed tremendous popularity.

Without exaggeration, nearly every one of my neighborhood buddies both hunted and fished.

During the months of October, November and December, the cars of hunters were strewn

throughout the countryside, everywhere you rode. Thanksgiving morning was mayhem!

Today if you see a car parked on the side of the road, you suspect foul play.

Yup, times they really changed.

Find a bass club and visit it. See if there are memebers in your age range. You will find out quickly if the club offers what you need. The guys I routinely fish with are 11 to 31 years younger than I am. Consider a mentor who is willing to invest in your interest and commitment to be a better angler. ;)

I had a neighbor who took me fishing when I was younger. My mom used to baby sit their youngest kid.Since nobody really fished in my family and neither did any of my friends,He was the only one that took me fishing a lot of times growing up.He was like a mentor to me,became almost like a second father figure. If it wasn't for him I don't think I would have ever really gotten to fish or have a passion for fishing like I do today.I found out Sunday that he died of leukemia.Heartbroken to say the least.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. I'm semi retired, so prefer to fish mid-week when all of the Lake Lice aren't around. The problem is that all of my friends are still having to work. Makes for a lonely fishing trip.

When I was in highschool I had several friends that would go fishing but they really weren't that in to it. I had a couple of friends that were pretty into it but they were both actually younger than me. Now that I'm a few years older I have lots of friends that fish with me and I almost never fish by myself. One thing that I found that is if you buy a boat you will all the sudden have people wanting to be your friend and go fishing with you that you never talked to before.

I'm 29 now but at that age I never really bass fish. I did fish all the time but more going down to the river and tossing out a line. I did have a buddy during those times, we always fished together. I got into bass about 4 years ago and most of time I fish alone if my brother doesn't come along or half the time he takes his boat with some others who wanted to go and I just bring my boat and go alone.

I don't mind fishing with people probably prefer it sometimes or at least getting up with others like we did at Powhatan lakes. Even if doing your own thing it's fun fishing as a group.

Growing up on a farm miles from any neighbors with kids, finding a friend to fish with was rarer than hen's teeth. My dad used to occassionally take me and my seven siblings fishing but he died when I was 11 so that ended that. While I could've probably begged my brother to go, I think I enjoyed an activity which was purely, uniquely my own (having to share just about everything else) so I didn't try. It's difficult to connect with like-minded people, sometimes but maybe you can ask your folks to help. Even if they can't or won't find the time to actually fish with you, maybe they can hook you up with someone who can.

I never had a problem finding people to fish with when I was younger. My dad bass fished with alot, and my friends both fished and hunted. Nowadays, totally different story. My dad doesn't fish too much anymore, and my friends either moved or quit. I also grew up in very rural part of Pennsylvania. They used to give us off school for the first day of deer season because they figured everyone would skip anyway.

I'm the same way. Im 17 and i have one friend i go fishing with, but he is tied up with other things most of the time. We enjoy our time fishing together, when we are able to, but I mainly fish with my old man. I even have a bass boat, but most of the people in my school think its too "redneck" to go fishing (what losers). They just don't realize what they are missing out on.

got a couple kids i know who fish, but aren't into it. I'd probably would spend way more time helping them than fishing. I mean thats not a bad thing but i'd rather not. But i know alot of guys i can go hunting with. But for fishing its either by myself or with my dad. I actually enjoy the alone time. it lets your relax and think about things.
