I was using Berkley Trilene XL Smooth Casting on all of my reels but then heard a lot of good things about Stren Original (purple label) and I purchased a few different spools in the green color, and love it now. I find it seems to tie up better, and it handles better. Just my take on it though. What do you all think?

You do know that they are the same company now. Pure Fishing owns them both.

The lines are similar but not the same. I prefer Stren Original. I actually have a bulk spool ~1000 yds of 10 #

I have used both. Whenever I go in looking for this, I usually go with the Trilene first, and the Stren if they are out of the Trilene. No particular reason. When I got started in fishing I was guided towards Trilene by the friend who introduced me to it, and I've just always used it. I've never really noticed a difference in them though, that I could pinpoint. I used 8# Trilene along side of 10# Stren once, both on spinning reels, and didn't see any difference. Being only 2 pounds different, I don't think that would affect it much.

I'm sure it's just preference, but I just really like Stren. Maybe because Bill Dance endorses it so much?

I've had really good luck with orginal stren. I've used Trilene and seems like I get more break offs than I should with it. It isn't my first choice for fishing line but I will use it when I need to.

I'm a braid man, however on my barracuda outfits I use mono, braid twists up too bad using barracuda tubes and can't be trolled out. 1 outfit has trilene xl and the other has original stren, I see absolutely no difference in the 2, both work just fine. Gotta say if it weren't for the twist issue I'd be using braid, mono is like using a long rubber band.

For what it's worth, maybe it's a placebo thing, but in the 10# lines of both brands, I thought the Stren was a little more managable, and consistent. The trilene had a touch more memory, and albeit being strong, I had too many break-offs too often. Almost like in some spots the line diameter was too thin, like 6# ish.

Been using Original Stren ever since it hit the market many decades ago. It has a nice combination of abrasion resistance, flexibility, shock strength and stretch. It is my primary mono type line. It is a line that is on most of my baitcasting reels in 14 pound test and above.

I also use XL in 10 # test when I want a flexible line--for example when I use a 4" soft stick bait as less flexible lines coil too much as the bait sinks.

Also use Berkley Big Game in 10 and 12# test for cranks.

As others have said, there are much better mono's out there. Sufix is my absolute favorite for mono. But for just Stren vs Trilene. Stren.

Been using 17lb Stren Clear/Blue Original the last couple of years and love it. Good Abrasion resistance, handles well and good knot strength. My problem with XL is that it has almost no abrasion resistance. XT has excellect abrasion resistance, but is not avaiable in Clear/Blue.

By the way I am a line watcher.

Just to let you know Bill Dance does not endorse stren anymore.He is with HiSeas for some reason now.
