Has anyone used any of St. Croix's new Rage series? I'm they look pretty nice but I haven't been able to handle one yet, and I am thinking about getting one.

I would pass. They felt cheap, and the handle was uncomfortable. The SCIII blanks are very nice though.

I'll be honest and say that this is the first that I have heard of them. I just went to the web site and checked them out. They look great especially for the price. I am thinking of ordering one for cranks once the Christmas spending is adjusted in the new year.

It was very small in diameter, I HATE how it has a gradual curve in it, it bothered me when holding it, and the neoprene material felt cheap in my opinion.

I didn't like the handle either. Gave the rod a cheap feel to me, if they would have done a regular split grip I'd own one right now. I liked it other than the grip.

I love mine.

BTW, they ALL have different grip sizes.

I held a 7'2'' MM = Medium Moderate that had a tiny grip diameter.

Make sure the guides are straight before you buy one

I love the feel of the handles and how they look. The fit in my hands nicely and the grip is very comfortable and I like the way it looks. Get one in your hands and make your own decision on them. Like Hi Salenity said, make sure the guides are straight though, I've seen a couple that had guides that weren't even close to straight.

Splurge and a buy an avid instead.

Not impressed by the upgraded mojo.

I've handled a few of them and don't care for them either, even though I have several St Croix rods that I love. I also find the handle too small in diameter for my liking. I personally would spend the extra $30 or $40 dollars and get the Avid. I'ts the same blank but a lifetime warrenty vs a 5 year and better guides IMO.

I handled them at Bass Pro and was impressed by the lightweight feeling. I cant get over the crazy price for Pac Bay components. Then saw the Legend Tournament Bass rods they had on clearence marked down to the same price. I think Shimano's redesigned Clarus and Compre will probably outshine and outsell the Rage.

I'm going to go to gander mountain over my winter break and check them all out. Hopefully I'll be able to make a decision then but I'll probably just stand there scratching my head.

I too was looking at getting a Rage rod, but I went to Cabelas and held one. The guides were not aligned on 2 of them there and the handle was small on all models and I did not like the feel. The epoxy was cracked in many places and it has Pac Bay guides. I then picked up the Cabelas XMTLI rods, regular $199, on sale for $119. These rods felt a little lighter, had recoil guides, and much better craftmanship. I bought the XMTLI and have so far been impressed. BUT, if your looking for a rod in the $160 range, the Phenix Recon CANNOT be beat! They are the lightest rod I have ever held, built like a custom, and are super sensitive. I would highly reccomend these rods over any ohter rod under $300, besides maybe the Cumara.

i too own a few st croix's and find it disappointing that the quality control on the rage series has been so poor, i havent looked at very many, but didnt see any misaligned guides, but i didnt like the handle, way too small on a 6'10" mlxf rod (thats the only one i have handled) and with most places having the 2011 LTB rods on clearance for the same price as an avid (or less) thats the way to go. far better guides, sc4 vs sc3, lifetime warranty vs 5 years, more comfortable handle, built in USA!, etc.

I am a big St Croix fan, and was excited to see these rods in person for the first time the other day. I really liked the way they looked, but once I got one in my hand, they seemed like nothing I needed to run out and buy.

I really like the feel of the rods and the lengths and actions. I dislike the final product inconsistencies.
