how to know if you have a healthy lake or not
According to the bass the fish are healthy. They have adapted to the changes in the lake and are continuing to find the food they need to stay healthy. According to your description the symptoms indicat that the fishing stinks.

how to know if you have a healthy lake or not
A healthy bass will appear to have a smaller mouth because their body is larger than we are used to seeing on bass of a particular size. The standard weights of healthy bass according to the American Fisheries Society are as follows: Length Weight 8in 5oz 9in 7oz 10in 9oz 11in 11oz 12in 14oz 13in 1lb 3oz 14in 1lb 7oz 15in 1lb 13oz 16in 2lb 4oz 17in 2lb 12oz 18in 3lb 4oz 19in 3lb 14oz 20in 4lb 9oz 21in 5lb 6oz 22in 6lb 4oz 23in 7lb 3oz These are intended as optimum goals. Standard weight may vary by region, according to length of growing season, elevation, water quality and other limiting factors. This is a fish who sits well above that. She is 18 inches long and weighs 4lb 7oz. Notice the smaller looking mouth. This is a regular sized mouth for an 18in fish but the larger than normal body size makes that mouth (head) look small. To accomplish this, the first thing to consider and adjust is an environment in witch all the organisms can live and grow and reproduce. That is where you start. Every pond and lake is different and each of them require different solutions. There is no "fix all" solution to grow healthy bass in every lake.

Trying to get started
Go to FLWOutdoors website and check out the co-angler standings for the Bulldog Division. You will see that the guy leading it is Ryan Lamb. We know him as Senko77 on here. He is 17 years old and sponsored by some big names like Spro. He was approached by Spro. He didn't seek them out they called him and asked him if they could help. This happened because he can flat out win. So go win some tournaments agains the older guys and then go from there.

I'm sorry, but you've got to be kidding.......... So that's the "fix all" for every lake with less than ideal sized bass. If so then why do people go to college to study fisheries management. So removing bass over 1.5lbs and increasing the number of baitfish in the lake is going to bring the entire ecosystem into balance and harmony within that body of water. Do you think that will be sustainable for years to come? It is not that simple. There are countless other factors to consider and adjust.

I think I'm done
Many people suffer from the Summer Blues. But I don't think that's your problem KY. You need to find something fun. I used love hunting and I was very good at it. About four years ago I got board with it and decided to make a change and focused on fishing and all was well. I guess I needed a different challenge to occupy my thoughts. I still deer hunt, but only for one or two weeks during the season. I fill my freezer and then I'm done.

Hunter education poll
My dad started teaching me how to handle a rifle when I was 6. He made me a wooden gun with all the details. (Safety, Trigger Guard, ect.) I passed my hunters safety course when I was 9. It scared the crap out of me. From that point on my dad was always with me and I didn't carry a loaded gun untill I was 13. When I turned 14 he let me hunt by myself for the first time. I am doing the same thing with my boys.

Okuma Reels
I have a VS-20, IS-20, IS-40, and EF-20A and I love every one of them. I've had a couple of them for almost five years and they have never given me any trouble. The IS-40 I use a couple times a year in salt water and it's still running strong. Get them off ebay and save a bundle.

Dear Mr. BaitCaster
That's typical on many brands of baitcasters. Most only have a max drag of around 8lbs.

ATL events
We are only a few weeks from the end of tournament season. Once deer season opens it's hard to find a tournament.

Very Dirty Water
If you have a lake that is usually clear or murky and one day it gets muddy the bass that are shallow will usually put their nose up aganst something so they can keep their position. When this happens I like to take a dark jig and drop it down beside a stump or a log and let it sit for at least 20 seconds before moving it. That's what I did on this day. You can just barely see the top of the stump under the water.

Hunting Question - Curious For Responses
This has happend a couple of times to me with deer. I always want to take the meat home with me so I make the phone call and talk to my warden. He usually gives permission over the phone to put the animal down but he won't let me clean and process it untill he meets me somewhere to fill out the paperwork and inspect the deer. He said that if he suspects someone of doing something illegal then he will have them take him to the spot and do an investigation.

$200 for speeding?
If you could just spend one weekend following me around at work you would never want to speed again and you would always wear your seatbelt. You just don't know. The dead ones are the lucky ones. Slow down. A couple of seconds in saved driving time isn't worth years of pain.
