  1. When I was a kid I used in-line spinners a lot. Caught some nice 15 + inchers on a black mepps with black furr. Since I came back to bass fishing this year I have only tied on a spinner a couple of times. Caught one this year on a spinner....the brand....Mepps. But it's a last case lure IMO. I love working plastics so much more.
  2. NO disrespect intended with the topic of this post. But there is this one old guy that fishes one of the places I go to. He is just plain out mean and cranky. Always complaining. Always giving me a line of crap (on Sunday he told me he had a 14lber within a foot of shore and broke his line, yep....sure). Don't think he remembers me at all. Everytime I walk past him he asks me how the fishing is going. I always tell him that it's not as good as the other place that I go to (New Albion). Why I tell him that everytime is beyond me because than he always goes into a HUGE rant about why the DEC won't "clean" that place out. Not sure if he is just a trout fisherman or what. But he is always complaining about the weedbeds and grass. Always tells me that he calls the state and yells at them for not scooping out the gunk. To me that is bass heaven! ;D Anyone else have that one fisherman who you just have to rattle every now and then.
  3. It's also an abbreviation for "North East" in my parts.
  4. Throwing plastics weightless in about 5-8 foot of stained water along weedbeds is my favorite scenario. Or just throwing a powerworm up into the rapids and letting them float on down the creek. Not big on putting weights on my plastics or fishing crankbaits. So I guess you could say that I'm a slow/twitchin type of fisherman.
  5. Eh....I would buy a license regardless of what they have been checking lately. Personally wouldn't chance getting my gear taken away and fined. That 30 bucks for a license is nothing compared to a fine and tackle loss.
  6. I think I'm going to have to give up entirely on the one small lake that I fish. There is almost zero structure or grass in the areas that I can get to. No boats are allowed. Only shore fishing in a few areas. It is owned by a gravel company so they can set there own rules. Sucks. But the other place I can take a boat out on. So I'm going to continue to hit those slop piles than. Can't get to them on shore so I will have to bust out the old raft and dress warm I guess. The days are numbered here in NY so I'm trying to make the best of it until that snow falls.
  7. That is what happened up here in NY. Same exact thing. I'm assuming that the bite will be back here in a bit. Because Friday and yesterday were horrid for me. No bites at all.
  8. I don't think you want to go any smaller than a #4 unless your fishing a *** of some sort. Than I move down to a #5.
  9. I use a Gammy #4 circle when I fish wacky style and haven't missed too many. But like others have said.....maybe try moving up to a #1 or a #2. If it is indeed a circle hook make sure your not setting the hook like you would on a T-rig. Just start reeling in and let the fish hook themselves. Once you feel the fish on, maybe give a small snap of the wrist to make sure that hook is in there good. Usually I don't do that though. Those Gammy #4 Yamamoto circle hooks are pretty sharp.
  10. Others know that this is the first year I have been back into bass fishing since I was 16....I'm now 28. Back then as a kid I pretty much just fished in the summer for the fun of it and than hit the sports in the fall. So this is my first time dealing with a Fall bite. The temps have been up in the 70s and 80s until this past week so the fishing was great! But now it has been about 6 days of temps in the 50s with it getting down in the 40s over night. Still have gone out and tried to catch fish in my two reseviors but there is NOTHING to be found. The bream are not even chilling at the outlet of the dam like they usually do. My take is that my fishing spots have turned. So I have tried everything....spinnerbaits.....buzzbaits (even though I know if it has turned they will not be up top most likely).........flukes rigged on a split shot rig and dragged on the bottom.....unpegged T-rigged worms dragged.......jigs........senkos.......kreatures......and I'm not even getting bit. Is the bass fishing (largemouth) now pretty much shut down until spring? I can take 3-4 hours of fishing without a fish, but not even getting a bite is frustrating. I realize the fish are not going to be active and that strike zone is going to be super small but are there any fisherman here that can give me some pointers to at least grab some bites? Especially you fellow fisherman that deal with the winter temps rolling in like this. Should I be concentrating on the deeper water of these fisheries or shallower water with some structure? Deepest points are around 18-20 foot with the bottoms being made up of sparse grass and sand with some rocks. Pretty much fishing from the shore right now but if putting my raft back out there means more bites than I'll do it.
  11. NY - 19.00 Seneca Nation Territory license - 35.00
  12. Toss up between *** *** and also Brents Baby duper Flukes. Any colors. Those are right now my most productive bait. My favorite thing to throw is any shakey style worm on a shakey head for smallies. Love the smallies.
  13. Haven't thrown them but I am interested in there shakey worm. 8-)
  14. It's been in the low 50s here the past couple days (30 miles south of Buffalo, NY). Going to try and get out tonight after work because the wife is going to watch one of her friends kids. FREE TIME!!!!! ;D Anyway I already have a brass and glass rigged up. 1/8 ounce bullet sinker unpegged with a black glass bead. Fishing a Manns Hardnose worm for the first time ever in a Tequilla Sunrise color (man do these stay on the hook nice and secure, now hopefully they catch me some fish). Going to fish it slow and see how I do. Good to see that some responses in this thread have been about fishing slow on the bottom. Obviously thats what I was thinking about as well when I put this rig on last night. I hardly ever fish with a bullet sinker and bead so I'm actually excited. I'm usually a weightless t-rig man.
  15. I hear ya. Even a 12" smallie can feel like a monster when he is taking you through those rapids and jumping like crazy. Love it.
  16. Catfish are crazy when it comes to staying alive. So that doesn't suprise me.
  17. Nice fish man. I dig those Terminator spinnerbaits as well. Most of all I love your dog. If I took my two dogs fishing with me.......well there would be more time chasing and rounding up the dogs than having a line in the water. ;D
  18. It's already on my gear wish list. lol I just emptied out my wish list today with an order and I'm already finding more things to add on come christmas time. It never ends....... ;D
  19. I spent about a half an hour last night looking through all of the spinnerbaits and didn't see that one. Thanks! No problem. Here it is....... http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=73167&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults Color code: 34 It's a pretty sweet looking bait.
  20. Less problems? There has to be something going on somewhere. I can probably count the number of times I have had a line break on my one hand. Just has never been an issue for me and this is my first year with a decent rod (St Croix). Something is going on and I for one would like to know what.
  21. I'm with Reel. It has to be the guides on his rods. I have been using Trilene XL in 8lb test for most of the year (not the greatest line), and I have never had a break. Something is causing some serious knicks and cuts in your line. Has to be....
  22. Same....I purchased the white ones because they were the only color left. Haven't given them a whirl yet though.
  23. Glad to hear it!!! It sounds pretty similar to the place in my avatar. I'm always cautious on telling people what works for me.........because who knows if the same thing will work in your situation but IMO the smallies just can't help themselves seeing that powerworm (and smelling it) falling through the current with the tail moving. Have fun with em!!!! I get my shot again in April/May. Long ways....... :'( Next time try it weightless with an offset 3/0 worm hook of your choice and see what happens. Mix up your retrieve. Sometimes fish it like a jerkbait and than pause for a couple of seconds. Really is a versitile worm IMO.
  24. My Yozuri Hybird Ultra Soft #6 finally came in yesterday. But I don't see anytime in the near future where I'm going to get a chance to spool it up and fish it. :'(
  25. I just purchased a Kevin VanDamn Strike King Spinnerbait. The color code.........Bluegill. Nice looking skirt and head on it. You can find them at Basspro.
