Update 8/14/09 - good ole project... (pic heavy)
Well, I've been looking for that perfect boat for almost 7-8 months now. Money was an object so I didn't expect anything fancy. I didn't want to exceed $1,000-1,500. This beauty (in the eye of the beholder) was listed on C-list for $750. Included: Boat, Trailer, 25HP Mariner, foot controlled trolling motor, battery, older lowrance depth finder, 2 anchors, some rotten seats with good hardware, livewell, and all wiring and plumbing that was taken out originally. I paid $600 for all. I figure after wood, glass, and some accesories I will still be under the original $1,500 budget. Motor is excellent condition. I will post pics along the way.

BPS Power Plus Rods
I have two of the graphite series rods that were on sale for $19.99 and they've taken a beating. They're obviously not the most sensitive rod and they could use 1 or 2 more eyes but it gets the job done... go to basspro.com and check the reviews on both of them. I understand the budget thing. good luck.

Rods for around $50 to $60
Bionic Blade from BPS. I have two of these rods and personally like them as much as my Extreme rod. Great, sensitive rod for the price. I believe they are $50 when they go on sale (regularly $80). My $.02 Good luck

Baitcaster, Right or left?
I grew up throwing baitcasters when left handed models were rare... now it just feels akward to reel a bc with my left hand. Spinning - Lefty Casting - Righty

Quantum- fading away???
I do not have much experience with the old Quantum's, but I personally love the new Accurist. I've only had one for 4-5 months and only one minor issue. It was kinda "rough" out of the package. I took it apart and greased the gears a bit and she is smooth as ever. I'm not a power fisherman so to me it's the perfect combination of price and performance... (I'm referring to the CX, not the PT) $55 shipped to my door... Also, (in my opinion) it's the perfect size. Smaller than a Trion and a little bigger than a Revo.

Disgusted...
I'll take those odds... there's a certain level of respect that is absent in a large portion of today's society...

Disgusted...
um, I know it's not the 50 year old man that fishes behind my house.... :-? or maybe it was and he did it while painting the stop sign and throwing stuff in the community pool....

help w/ new reel
Pfluegers are great reels. My fishing partner only uses Pfluegers with 8 of the 10 being President's... He also has a supreme. Pfluegers are extremely smooth and durable and I like them. I do not have experience with shimanos. I do not fish for $$ so my most expensive combo retails for $150 (Bionic Blade w/Quantum Accurist). I love the feel of the Accurist. It is not as small as the Revo but not as big as the Pfluegers or 200D Shimanos... just right for me and feels like it will last for many many outings.... my $.02 all in all, at least you are researching before you buy... good luck with your purchase and tight lines!!

Disgusted...
Good idea, I didn't think of that... I'm going to call them. I don't have any patience for this kind of stuff... and I hate to cast judgement, but I agree that it might be the local kids in the neighborhood.

Disgusted...
Lately I have been seeing numerous dead species in my local canal... Tilapia, bass, and even ducks! At first I thought the county sprayed for weeds and it killed a few fish. But then I was confused when I saw the ducks, I've never seen this many dead ducks... Anyway, this has been for the past couple of weeks and I've been confused. Yesterday I was walking the bank when I looked down and saw a dead largemouth bass with a tennis ball stuck in his mouth (holding his mouth open). The bass was caught, had a tennis ball stuck in his mouth, and released. I'm not certain, but it now leads me to believe that some of the other dead species have been intentional as well... I was extremely upset when I saw the LMB dead and extremely skinny... >

Bass Attractants??
Cheap alternative: Start with a base of Cod Liver Oil. Add salt. Then add you're favorite scent. Sometimes I use Garlic Powder and sometimes I use Coffee! You can also add anise... Let your soft plastics soak in this. Also, you can mix with vasoline so it will stick to jigs and other hard baits... You can get 16oz of Cod Liver Oil for like $6... the best part is the ability to experiment with different scents... word of advice... don't try this before a dinner party or when you are expecting company...

Need some Reel Advice!!
Try a Pflueger if you're looking for something different... pretty good bang for the buck, in my opinion...

Line for my BC Reel
Quantum Accurist, 30lb PowerPro, 7' MH Bionic Blade - Spinnerbaits, Crankbaits, and Heavy Topwater Plfueger Supreme (Round Baitcaster), 40lb PowerPro, 7' Heavy Extreme, Frogs and Jigs Anything light, I use spinning tackle for. (Which also has braid, 20lb PowerPro.) I only use braid and if you're fishing around a lot of grass you may want to try it out. Some love it and some hate it....

Deep Crank Rod
Don't want to hijack, but.... Muddy, how does that thing cast? Does it effect distance? but I guess if your throwing large cranks, it wouldn't hinder much? just curious
-
oh My!!! Shimano lovers....
I may convert... my local BPS has the Citica and Extreme combo for $109.... I think I would have to pay $139 and still send in for the $30 but man!! That's like buying the reel and getting the rod for free... I think that is a smokin deal... they are $169 regularly

Using Braid in clear water?
I agree... I only use braid b/c of the characteristics are like no other line... I can have a 20 pound strength line on a small spinning reel... also, it's a major confidence thing. There are trees and weeds everywhere I fish and I have no hesitation when pulling fish to the boat... no leader for me. and so far, I have seen no negative effect when fishing clear water. Even a wacky rigged senko in gin clear water still catches fish.
