Daiwa Certate
I bought the smaller model the CT2000 & then picked up another one the CT2500 for more line capacity. They are great reels especially when picked up on sale for $200. I personally did not perceive a difference between mine & my buddies older model stella. Very smooth reeling with exceptional smooth drags.

Master Angler Award Program
PA angler program requires an application but is done on the honor system so there is no weight verification. They have a different program for state records which requires a strict application & weight verification on state inspected scales with a printout slip & stipulation that the new record must be at least two ounces heavier.

Please tell your annual fishing trip story
A couple of high schools buddies get together every year to fish for pike & lake trout each year in June at lake athabasca at the top of Alberta/Saskatchewan provinces. We almost always go for the first week that the camp is open. Our rational is the pike haven't seen a lure for over 6 months and they got to be hungry. This strategy has severed us well except for two years. One year the ice hadn't thawed yet & they couldn't land a float plane. We found out less than a week before we were going. Plane tickets already purchased & gear already packed. What a let down that was. Talk about withdrawal! The over year half the lake was still frozen so we could only get to less than half of our spots. We spend two days traveling & fish for seven days. We see moose, bears, martins fox and lots of eagles. A big water lake over 200 miles long and as deep as 500 feet. We always go anticipating a new pb trout or pike and over the years we have raised the bar pretty high and pbs come much less frequently. Even remote lakes can serve up tough fishing days & there have been a few skunk days for everyone. This lake has served up a 101lb lake trout & a 43lb pike. This has always been our little piece of heaven away from our home lakes. We have always been blessed with not only quanity but a lot of quality fish on our trips.

now we're talkin'.
That's a beauty! Paul are you fishing near a dam spillway? Couple of my buddies & I used to fish right up to watts bar dam before 9/11 when there was access. Most of ours were caught ticking the bottom with live bait but they hit surface plugs readily at first & last light.

NRX rods
bassinbrian, the 852 is the same blank specs as the 802 just in a 5" longer rod. If your not really dedicated to "super lightness" I would suggest looking at the 853 med heavy for more backbone to handle occasional heavy cover situations. My choice for the 802 as a smallie rod is for lake erie open water with no cover to contend with except the bottom fishing 15-40 feet of water. They are sweet sticks.

NRX rods
From a previous post I picked up a NRX802CJWR from tackleware house during the 20% off sale for fishing light weight jigs for erie smallies. I have it paired with a core 50mg7 and 10lb braid & 12lb maxima leader. Since I got it I have only used it with suspending jerk baits for smallies because that was what was working at the time. It is a very light combo and a pleasure to use. Very light tip for casting. My only objection is that the back to back uni knot lets the tag end of the mono leader catch on the small recoil guides when reeling in. I will try the alberto knot to see if it resolves the issue or dedicate the combo to floro. Extremely sensitive rod as well it should be for the price. It loads up nicely after hooking up and is capable of handling big smallies in open water but really lets you enjoy the fight because it does not overpower the fish. In fact big smallies on this combo actually felt bigger than they turn out to be after landing them. I caught numerous fish between 4 lbs up to 5-15oz on it this fall before winterizing the boat. Try one if you like but they will & do spoil you.
