Becoming a Professional Bass angler...is fishing talent enough??
Pure bass catching talent will carry you a long way but in the end it's about selling yourself to sponsors AND carrying out your sponsorship commitments WHILE catching fish and placing well in tournaments against the best in the world. Just qualifying to fish on the Elite Tour takes a ton of talent. Staying on the Elite Tour and making a good living doing it takes even more talent. I'm not sure of the #'s but there are several guys each year that win the chance to stay on the Elite level and many of those guys opt out. Probably not because of lack of fishing talent, though.

Pflueger Supreme spinning reel or President
I have several Supreme's. 30's and 35's and love 'em. The reels being so light (especially the 30) is what initially made me buy one to try. After using it I found it to be very smooth with minimal line twisting and the drag is slick as silk.

Good Lord! 12 ounces shy of state record, fishing in the rain!
It was either Bucketmouth or Troutfisher that did this same thing a couple years ago.

Vertical Spoons?
Vertical is the only way I fish a spoon. Usually when the shad are in tight groups hanging deep at 20' or more. If you can tell what depth the bass are holding, try to keep your lure at or just above that level, especially if the water is cold. With most graphs you can drop your spoon straight down under the transducer and see it dropping on your screen. This will help you get in the strike zone. Once you get in the strike zone, you can put a small piece of tape on your spool that helps you keep that depth on multiple drops.

New Respect for Pros!
Jerkbaits are the worst. My hands have been stiff and sore in the mornings for a month now. I'll be glad when the jerkbait bite is over with.

Late Spring in Virginia?
Here on Smith Mtn, I'm still pulling fish from my 'winter hole'. The area the hole is in has had shad in it ever since December and they're still there. Its a good thing too because there's not much happening up on the banks. Last weekend we did catch a few up shallow in the afternoon when the water had reached a balmy 54 degrees. Went back yesterday and the water temp was 49 in the a.m. and had only warmed to 51-52 in one major creek (up river) by 2pm. I had to hit the winter hole again to get bit. Things are definitely a little behind. I think this coming week is when you'll start to see fish up shallow. If the temps get into the 60's this week like they're supposed to, next weekend should be a good one. The recent rains and lower temps have hurt but with the water being stained now in some key areas, it should heat up quick.
