  1. They work year round but, as mentioned, they are great in early spring. I have not found one brand to be superior to another as far as catching goes. BUT I am really impressed with the new Red Eye Shad. It is fantastic in sexy shad and chrome/blue.
  2. Make your life much easier....Go buy either Sufix or power Pro. I personally rank Fireline as the number 1 worst line I have ever used. For spinning gear, I use 30lb Sufix braid...But only for redfish, hybrids, and stripers.
  3. Hybrids run in extremely large schools chasing baitfish. The key is to find the baitfish. I fish for hybrids very often and catch them in 40-60ft of water. They will crush topwaters but you will usually catch many more fishing below the topwater bite. The best lure I have ever used is made by Gerald Reynolds. He is a local guide on Greers Ferry Lake. Greers has the world record and will probably have the next one as well. Its an inline spinner called the secret weapon or top secret. If you are interested, I will give you his number and he will mail you some. They are $6 a piece and top quality...much better than roostertails. Geralds baits are hand made and have a thumper blade that puts off great vibration. The key is to use your depthfinder and locate baitfish or to find the hybrids busting on top. Drive your boat right into them and start casting. I use 2 rods at one time and let one sink while i burn the other in....Early morning I throw a spook(blue chrome) or a Sammy. On Greers, we all have handhelds and will call the other boats when we find the fish, Usually there are about 12 of us so we always know where they are. if you can find a group like this, you will be set. Lastly, I always recommend getting a guide for a half day. You will learn all you need to know. Even if it is on your home lake They will fight like crazy and they are a very fun fish to chase. Cut the red out of them and they are delicious. Here is a double from the spring.
  4. I dont feel comfortable on plane anywhere on that lake! If you dont know it well be careful. But have fun it can be a great lake.
  5. *** Mizmo Tubes I prefer watermelon, black/red fleck, smoke, pumpkinseed, black with chart....The color depends on water clarity. The *** tubes are the toughest i have found and are very effective!
  6. They will
  7. That is a dream trip!! I have been talking to my buddy about doing this for the last 2 years. I WILL go there sometime.... Great pics!!!
  8. WOW! I really don't understand this way of thinking.....Gun bans have never worked in any town or country...never. Its really simple for me. Without a gun, anyone can break into my home and hurt my wife and I. With my gun, someone breaks in, my dog barks, and I shoot them. My wife and I are safe.
  9. I would get a BPS Extreme spinning combo 6'6" or 7' M action Woo Daves rod. You can also substitute a shimano sahara for the extreme reel for about the same cost. Put your yozuri on one spool and put 30 lb sufix braid on the spare spool. This will allow you to fish any situation for just about any freshwater fish. The M action extreme is the perfect all around rod. It has enough tip to toss light baits and has a ton of backbone for lifting some monsters out of the slop. You will be very pleased.
  10. The Lowrider was one of my favorite rods until it was stolen!!!!! Falcon makes a good stick and the Cara is great.
  11. I fish deeper and at night. Usually throw finesse worms, jigs, deep divers during thew day and 10" worms and black colorado spinnerbaits at night. I can still catch fish shallow but they are all small spots. The better fish are deeper.
  12. What tourny? With the river as high as it is, the usual spots arent possible to fish. PM me if you want some of the better areas. I fish there a lot and used to fish the Tuesday night tournies but havent even fished it this year.
  13. I use 10" Berkely Power Worms and they can be found pretty much anywhere.
  14. I am absolutely 100% sold on the watermelon magnum wigglewart. I fish a clear lake and this thing has produced more fish than all my other crankbaits combined. I am using the Arkansas Warthawgs but the storms are pretty much the same. Watermelon is color S10 on the link. http://www.stormlures.com/products/luresdetail.cfm?modelName=wiggle_mag_wart&freshorsalt=Fresh&type=hard_lures Normans, DT's, and strike king pro grade are all pretty good IMO. But try the wigglewart it is a fish catching machine
  15. I use a 1/4oz most of the time. My buddy started using tru tungstun weights and says they are unbeatable. I do NOT want to even try them.
  16. Sammy 100 any color. Pointers are GREAT but I have had the same luck with x raps.
  17. If you want to chip a tooth
  18. I agree about YoZuri hybrid but haven't tried Ultra soft.
  19. What sort of lake are you fishing? From boat or shore?
  20. I have a 701 and a 702 and they are fantastic. Among the best I have used and absolutely built like a tank.
  21. That surprises me. I thought Fireline was one of the worst lines I have ever used. It is stiff as a board, can't stand the waxy texture, loud when casting, and did I say stiff as a board. Some people love it but I just don't understand.
  22. I would try GYCB Hula Grubs on a jighead, tubes, senkos, and an X Rap. The X Rap is considered a colder water bait but it works year round in the type of structure you are talking about. I fish a lake that has been flooded for quite some time and the smallies were stacked in flooded trees with a lot of underwater branches in 15-20ft of water. I would hit ever tree like this and catch 4 or 5 each stop on a magnum watermelon wart hawg. Good Luck!
  23. No if: fishing muddy water fast moving lures (cranks, spinners, etc..) pitching into thick cover I would say yes for anything else.
  24. Searoach A cardinal 302 holds 175 yds of 6lb. So with 10 you will still get way over 100 yds of line. It is not possible to run out of line. If you are then you have either not filled your spool, have had many break offs, or have a faulty spool. This spool is actually larger than many other spinning reels. This isn't based on opinion it is a fact that the spool holds 175yds....Will be a little less with 10 pound. http://www.abugarcia.com/prod.php?k=78563&sk=50041&p=PURC300U%20(1114388)
