A large portion of my career revolved around Training & Instructing Professional, Commercial & Civilian mariners on the proper & effective use of Survival Equipment. My Perspective on Personal Floatation Devices goes like this; The device has to be reasonably comfortable. I say this first because regardless of the type, if you don’t wear it it’s useless. However, there is a tradeoff between “Comfortable” and effectiveness. Generally the lighter, less bulky types / designs are more comfortable but provide less buoyancy which is what the PFD is all about. Learning which types are required by law and how each performs allows one to make an educated decision. Going overboard unexpectedly is always a life-threatening event and a shock, regardless of the circumstances. There are several factors that can & will complicate and magnify this emergency. They include, but are not limited to Cold ~ both Air & Water temps (regardless of the survival equipment worn), Rough water, meaning wind & waves, operating in current, (like rivers and tidal water), being ALONE, fishing from a smaller craft, being injured on the way over the side, not being able to swim and obviously not wearing a Life Jacket. Other things to think about: going overboard fully dressed is not like swimming at the beach. A cotton hoodie & denim jeans make moving at all in the water very difficult – PFD really helps here. Getting back on board one's vessel in waterlogged clothes is very difficult; especially when fishing alone. On boats large enough to have one, a boarding ladder is a must. On smaller boats, (canoes, kayaks & smaller john boats) these boats often capsize as part of the event. Depending on a long list of factors, re-righting the boat may or may not be an option. But getting out of cold water ASAP is not an option and needs to happen sooner rather than later. Climbing up onto a capsized hull is even good just to get out of cold water. Your Life Jacket will assist a conscious victim to stay afloat until help arrives (hopefully). Hyperthermia Kills people. Years of searching for victims has proven that it is best to Stay With Your Boat. Whether it is capsized or if it’s up right and you just can’t board it. The craft offers two important benefits; first it makes a much better locating target. A persons head bobbing around in waves in really hard to see & find. Second, your boat provides something to hang on to. The vast majority of the time I’m alone, and there’s NO One else on the water with me. In the warmer months, I fish at night. I carry two type III PFD’s in the boat that are laid on the deck up on the bow so that if the canoe capsizes, they will float free. I wear an inflatable Mustang HIT type PFD. In my mind the two most important factors that I can control every trip I make are; that my wife knows exactly where I’m going and when I’ll be back; and I’m wearing that life jacket while I’m out there. I tried the mega big ones and put loads of content on it, only to have it go bad, and I lost some stuff I would have liked to have back. (First several years of fishing in Mexico - very hurt by that). So my advice is to use the smallest memory device that will suit your needs and only put one year on each one. That way if & when it fries out, you'll only lose that one year's worth of stuff. I also lost a bunch when my PC got hit with a wicked virus a few years back. That's when I started saving content off my PC. A-Jay

I've been through this myself. My file organization solution has evolved into the following, and it's been good. Each fishing year gets a separate folder—Fishing 2026, for instance. In the folder, every fishing trip I have any content, I make a new folder for named with the date. Inside each trip folder I keep all the video & Pics from that trip. At the end of the year I download that folder and its contents to an external drive. Eventually I'll clean them off my PC but still have them on the drive. When I want or need to go back to something, I just need the year and the date of the trip, and it's all right there. Of course some of my trips end up as YouTube videos. So most everything I use to make the video is in that folder. Comes in real handy when I want to do "A Year in Review" deal. Good Luck A-Jay

I ran batteries for YEARS before I switched to the Juicebank by YoloTek. https://yolotek.com/products/juicebank-black-gopro-battery-mount-7800mah-lithum-ion The batteries work fine - even in Mexico. Through the past several years, as GoPro started adding features, the cameras started running hotter and hotter. They have been using the same outdated processor in these cameras for too long. I'd be happier with a quality video and a simple one-button point and shoot. I use less than half of what the camera 'can do'. Features I do not need/use, and I can turn it 'off', I have. Just update the processor to handle the load and be done with it. When I am using the camera for a short shoot, I'll use a battery, and it's always fine. Not sure if the 13 will burn through a battery or overheat first. Batteries last less time the more I use them. (I ONLY use GoPro batteries; knock-offs are junk IMO. Been there). After half a season, 30 minutes of constant running, and the battery is usually toast. I have a trip planned for Mexico in Oct 26. We use two cameras. One runs the entire time we fish, and the other is for the fish pic , weigh, and release. We decided that rather than deal with the overheating, we are going to turn one camera on once one of us hooks up with a scoreable bass and then shut it down after the release. Should be good with that. If you follow my exploits down south, you'll see how it goes one way or the other. A-Jay

I always capture my adventures with the highest quality video the recording circumstance will allow. GoPro advertises that they have such high-quality video, I pay for it, then I can't use it ? Makes no sense. Here in Michigan it only happens on the hottest days. Think sunny and usually over 80 degrees with no wind. I do most of my fishing early & late season so it's not a huge problem. In the summer when I'm in the canoe with my wife, it happens a few times a year. But in Mexico I think you can see where it's a problem. We work around it as best we can, but it gets old. I use an external battery pack in lieu of batteries for juice. I NEVER LOOP my recording because the process makes it way too easy to forget to hit save and record right over something you want to keep - forever. Bottom line, I like my Gopros and have been able to successfully load over a thousand videos using them. Just think that this overheating deal could be overcome if they wanted to and I'm even willing to pay for the upgrade. Just make it happen. The newest model, the 14, expected next year, is reported to be coming with an updated 3.0 processor. Hope that works. Either way, I'll keep filming (and cursing as needed). A-Jay

Google DJI Osmo overheating and see if you still feel the same way. My results seem to indicate that DJI Osmo models, especially when recording in high resolutions (like 4K or 8K) and high frame rates (like 60fps), are prone to overheating and shutting down, though performance varies by model, firmware, temperature, and settings. Issues are common in warm conditions or direct sun, with solutions involving lowering settings, taking breaks, ensuring good airflow, and sometimes using external cooling or power handles differently. Gopros running for hours have been known to overheat and shut down. When using external power, removing the battery from the camera can help delay the problem. But when it is way hot and in the sun, say over 85 degrees F, shutting down at the most inopputune time is a real reality. Might even lose previously save content. Hope the new 3.0 processor addresses this. Other wise keeping video brief is really the only way to manage it effectively. Good luck A-Jay

I've mentioned this a few times during blade bait discussions here, but it really does bear dropping it here again. Fishing the Duo Realis G-Fix Vibration Tungsten Lipless Crankbait in lieu of a blade bait can be Really Really Really good (and that was 3 really's) It's a thin, dense rattle bait that casts a mile, gets deep quickly, and stays there. I prefer to present it in the same way and in the same places as a blade bait. A very small, medium-speed lift off the bottom, just enough to feel the rattle for just a second, and then let it glide back to the bottom on a tight line. A brief rest on the bottom and then go again. Bites come on the fall, AND brown bass will eat it right off the bottom at times.
