  1. I put wire leaders on a few spoons today using piano wire with the Haywire Twist (recommended) for some toothy critters, if anyone is interested. Good move for freshwater pike and muskie. http://www.georgepoveromo.com/perfectlyhaywire.htm http://www.leadertec.com/tipsandtechniques/rigging_with_wire/haywire.html
  2. Guess I've been using something like a blood knot..............I like the albright better. Looks easier and a smaller knot. Thanks
  3. Only time I tie a mono leader to braid is fishing for spanish mackeral or kingfish, they will attack a swivel as if it were a lure, then you get cut off. I have no name for the knot, just something I've been tieing for years. For me 3 feet is ample length for the leader, all personal taste.
  4. I do have a friend using a Cabo 40, it's a very fine reel, he swears by it. I have been with guides and seems to be the reel of choice. One guide out of Islamorado and another out of Ft Pierce. I'm on a saltwater board here in Florida and the choice of many hardcore fisherman is the Cabo. I liked it, but since I don't own one I wouldn't rank it. Buy a Van Staal a be a real player
  5. I would seek the advice of someone that has been in business, many fail the first couple of times, failure is knowledge well worth knowing for future use. Whether this business would make it or not, I don't know, but what I do know is how to start a business as I have done a number of times. #1 biggest mistake is under capitalisation. Set up costs a buck or 2, rental lease, showcases and other fixtures, liability insurance ( never know if someone gets hurt in your place of business and sues). Taxes, state and federal, Social sec 14% and 7% for employees, not sure but maybe unemployment compensation and workman's comp. The tax aspect is different if you are a dba vs being incorporated. Enough cash to carry business until it starts to turning a profit, not to mention personal living expenses. Do you need a vending license? We have just scratched the surface, incidental repairs, cash to buy inventory etc., exactly why big box stores will beat mom & pops heads in, they have deep pockets. You may need credit, I understand it is loosening, but I'm no pro in that field, especially being retired. Maybe run it by Road Warrior he would know, he's an expert in that area. Just opening the front door does not mean you will do business, now you have to advertise and that isn't free. Not to belittle any advice you have gotten, but free advice is worth exactly what you have paid for it...........NOTHING!! Find yourself and mentor and never discuss any business idea on line, if it's good it will be stolen in a New York minute. Only advice I would give ( probably worth nothing ) is be prepared to live a life of stress 24/7, that's what's takes. I don't want to discourage, only make you better prepared.
  6. A shimano stradic for $65.00? I don't need one but for that price gotta get it. Must be regional, their web site only lists a callisto cobo for 79.99, I'd call first.
  7. FYI, penicillin was discovered before ww2, 1928 to be exact. Relenza and Tamiflu are both anti viral drugs used against swine flu, I have read they must be used with care. Never hurts to know the facts before posting.
  8. The answer is NO, with 1 exception dolphin if I catch one. My dad was in the fish and seafood business, we ate fish only once a week.
  9. I learned the traditional way but over the years I have gradually gone to putting my pinky on the front of the reel barely on to the foregrip( I have small hands) when I have a sizeable fish on I slide up and use the foregrip for more leverage. No right or wrong, just what's comfortable.
  10. Not being a doctor it would be wrong to give an opinion as to a diagnosis. Being at the hospital I'm sure just basic tests were run and sincce you were released so quick, I would assume the professionals thought there was nothing life threatening. Had they given any instructions to "aftercare"? A complete physical is never a bad idea.
  11. That was a good a video. A couple of years ago, Jose Wejebe the Spanish Fly was fish near Australia. Hooked a RED SEA BASS fish off a reef and the fish got lodged. He put on swim fins ,snorkel and mask and jumped in and fought the fish underwater. Staged I'm sure but it was the most remarkable feat I ever saw. I could not find the video, but if you scroll down on the links there are some pictures. http://www.spanishflytv.com/photos/jose_austrailia.php
  12. Let me clarify, the jack was not my fish, I just finished it up for the last 10 minutes, lot of pics taken of that bruiser but none of my homeboys sent me one. As far as that snook, caught him on the same reel as that last bass I posted (recently moved that reel to freshwater use) with a 7' hurricane redbone rod, same 15# braid, but with a 30# leader.
  13. This was a high banked canal catch, when I fish canals I go with my heavier outfit. Daiwa 6'6 med 8/14, cardinal 802 15# braid and 20# leader. Poor quality cell phone photo.
  14. Assuming this is a spinning combo, I do own a Medalist 5000 (saltwater reel and heavy). The reel has served me well, quite smooth. I use it in shore for cuda and off shore for kingfish and bonita, they will test your equipment to the max. Reel gets plenty of saltwater spray and still performs like new, occasional use of corrosion block on the bearings helps as well.
  15. I've spoken with guides that fish lake Ida and down the line they use live shiners for Peas. I've only banked fished Lake Ida and have done poorly.
  16. Corona, you can keep the lime.
  17. Slightly off topic, but immediately after each fishing outing i wash my hands thoroughly, never know what's lurking on the vegetation these days. I never snack while fishing but if I were out for a prolonged period I'd carry anti bacterial.
  18. I bring them in on the slow side, it may be the last fish of my life and I want to enjoy it. I don't compete in tournaments so if I lose a fish that's fine, I'm releasing it anyway. Have yet to have one go belly up from fatigue.
  19. My mistake, I had missed where he was focusing on the 4000 size, I apologize, even though I would still go with 2000 or shimano 2500, that's my style of fishing. He mentioned 5 oz swimbaits, now we are talking rods, as the size reel isn't as important. I had a nightmare recently and woke up in a cold sweat, had dreamed I bought a B/C and mh rod.
  20. Can't knock the stradic fi 4000, I have one and it is flawless. Imo 4000 is way way too big for bass, 20# drag, close to 300yds of braid ( Chris only uses braid and I would doubt if he topshots ) and weighs 11 1/2 oz. Best bet is the 2500, 15# drag and weighs considerably less, less line capacity,it's all you need. This little guy was caught on abu 802 and medium rod
  21. I gave this one a bit of thought and you probably can't go wrong with any reel in the 75-125 range. Drags & handles are smooth and as far as durability, your gonna buy new technology in a year or 2 anyway. Get the weight you want and make sure it pleases your eye. Above that 125-150 mark what you get is a boost to your own ego it will not handle fish measurably better, the tool is only as good as the one using it...........you know that! As far as Tierra and I saw her, that pic was 5 years old, she probably goes 300# now.
  22. Going back to light spinnning tackle and giving up b/c, conventional only for offhsore fishing.
  23. I agree, we need to eliminate the EPA. I just loved the taste of toxic chemical run off in our lakes and streams, sure improved the taste of walleye. Remember the days when we picked soot out of our teeth due to air pollution from factory stack emissions, COPD it's no big deal, fond memories of Newark New Jersey. No need to worry about unbiodegradable garbage in our land fills, we've acres of land to build new ones right near your favorite lakes, the stench is breathtaking, or just barge them out into international waters, crabs & lobsters are scavengers anyway. Cafe standards and hybrid vehicles, who needs it, I can easily afford $4.00 a gallon getting 8-10 mpg. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
  24. Ever hear the phrase " 90% of water has no fish", unscientifically I think it's true. No question about it a boater has huge advantage over a shore fisherman, I have done both and now I only bank fish in freshwater. If you can't catch anything on a plastic worm, it's a dead zone, move on. Only 3 things you need to know about fishing : 1. How to locate them 2. How to trigger a strike 3. How to land them It's fishing not catching, if it were that easy Flip Pallot and Kevin Van Dam would be out of business.
  25. Would not change a thing. Just a matter of time till it happens, if in fact that area has larger fish, it may not. I'm catching quite a few in the 5-7lb range and I'm just about convinced the areas I fish don't contain larger fish.
