powell and e21
Powell has all those characteristics as well. I haven't fished the Carrot Stix but I have compared them while holding them in the shop and the Powells feel better to me. Powell is also growing their distributor base. When I purchased my Powells (four of them) I had to get them shipped to me which was two to three years ago. Now I have three locations nearby that sell them. This test by tackletour.com three years ago convinced me to give them a try. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfast.html

Best GPS/ Fishfinder on a Budget?
I just googled the Lowrance LMS520C and found one for approximately $415 at First Choice Marine. They are end of sale so if you search you should be able to find a good price. Cabelas is selling the Lowrance x510c for $399 right now as well. I can't say they are the best but these would be my choices. LMS520c 200 kHz sonar/GPS plotter 5" diagonal, 256-color SolarMAX TFT display 480x480-pixel resolution Built-in temp sensor and up to 60° of fish detection coverage 2,400 watts peak-to-peak power, depths to 900 ft. Compatible for NMEA networking 5 pin ethernet expansion port X510c 5" diagonal, 256-color SolarMAX TFT display 480x480-pixel resolution Built-in temp sensor and up to 60° of fish detection coverage 2,400 watts peak-to-peak power, depths to 900 ft.

Deep running crankbaits
I've never had any trouble with the lips either, but I don't fish rocks that often in the lakes that I fish. I use the following: Rapala DTs (all depths) Bomber Fat Free Shad BD6F and BD7F Norman DD22 I've read and watched videos of anglers using the Luhr Jensen Hot Lips and I think I'm going to purchase some of these.

How did you originally choose
Any of the big name reel manufacturers (Quantum, Shimano, Pflueger, Diawa, Abu Garcia, etc) make a decent product in my opinion. You buy one brand because of information and opinions you gather, you get used to that brand and like it's quality, and this leads to further purchases of the same brand. I buy a brand that I know will perform. Others may perform just as well or better but I buy what I know to be a good product. However, this doesn't mean I won't buy another brand later and try it out if my research shows it is worth trying.
