  1. When do you throw a jig? When do you use a beaver style creat. bait? Even one of the best jig flippers of all time,Tommy Biffle is winning with the beaver. Hookset
  2. I'D A HOped you'd have some pics. You the Man! y
  3. Bassky said it best about the Arky head jig in wood, that's where they shine because the shape of the head deflects well off wood. The Swim jig with a narrow triangular head is snag city in timber. They succeed more in emergent vegetation like coontail, millfoil or hydrilla.
  4. Hello Thrasher, I would look at the Rapala DT crankbait series, from shallow to however deep you would like to crank. As far as colors, think about your home waters and what type of prey fish live in them. In addition, are your bodies of water clear, murky or muddy. Then pick smaller natural colored crankbaits for clear water and bigger noisier {rattles}lures with bright or fluorescent colors for stained and murky water In addition, for soft plastic lures you can try some of the new cutting edge Trigger X Scent baits. Again pick lure bodies that replicate the type of forage your lakes might have. Some surefire lures are plastic worms, lizards, grubs and crayfish imitators. Let me know if you have any more questions. Hookset on 3
  5. This is true in some waters (with high sunfish density) but not so for waters without. I see both situations existing in adjacent ponds. I've always had this concern about catching males off beds. While some studies have shown that it only takes a few successful beds on a good hatch year to create a good year class, I have to argue that this argument misses the food value good hatch years can bring to the mature bass in that water body. YOY are great food for mature bass in a lot of ponds I fish. I'd like to see more YOY bass not less. We can cull 'em (for growth of remaining bass) after they grow too large to be considered bass food. Wherever I've fish, males are vulnerable to anglers and on popular waters many are caught repeatedly and to a state of exhaustion. Another quote from the article: I guess I need to see the original article. Team9nine wrote: I can answer that one. Bass are way more vulnerable to angling under low visibility conditions, and much less so under high vis conditions. We mostly get our licks in under deep overcast, and our butts kicked when it's sunny. We can adapt by fishing deeper, or into cover, but it just isn't the same as a good dark day. Heck, I'll even settle for a light wind ruffling the water sometimes. Best case scenario: Give me a pond that's NEVER been fished, either sunny or cloudy. Hello Paul, great idea for a new thread: What's the best virgin water pond you've ever fished? Hookset
  6. Memo, Thank you for serving in the Armed Forces. That's what makes this country great [/b
  7. 8-) Hey Fin, well thought out explanation. It takes years of worming n' jiggin to tell a pick-up vs. a stick. But what do we all say "hooksets are free" Thanks, Hookset on3
  8. Hello BMajor, welcome to the Gold Standard in Fishing Forums IMO. Any time you have a question no matter how obscure or obvious, there are a bunch of serious bass hounds here to help out. Anyway, the blue claw is indicative of that craws actual coloring. I fish for smallies in a river here in New England and they too contain crayfish that are blue during certain seasons. Now I'm not sure you need to buy a bunch of blue jigs or trailers but start out with a few. Keep your eyes open for more crayfish to prove your hunch. Hookset
  9. What does this mean? If you mean the label on the supply spool is facing up, then that is not the way to do it. Labels are put on both ways. The spool should be on the floor such that the line comes off it counterclockwise. Hello Marty, I have a comment. I purchased a Daiwa TD-Pro spinning reel and the owner's manual states that the supply spool should be hung on horizontal line winder(Berkley Line spool and stripping device). Furthermore, the line should roll off the supply spool as it is rotating on the metal rod while it comes off from the bottom. Finally, the manual clearly shows that laying the supply spool flat and winding line onto your reel is the incorrect way to put line on a spinning reel. Needless to say, I'm confused, because I was taught your technique many years ago and that's how we did it. :-/
  10. Believe me, I'm considering it when I'm done with school. What would you consider the best part of the state for bass fishing? I've considered Jacksonville, because of the Mayo Clinic. I live in Rochester, home of Mayo. The Jacksonville area would be great. You've got the fantastic St.Johns River watershed which includes Stick Marsh and Farm 13. They are absolute lunker factories.
  11. I concur! with all that Alan said, I'd put my money on Rick Clunn. He got the greatest ever title by doing more than looking at eletronics. Hookset
  12. Hello Skillet, was it Aaron Martens on Lake Erie last year during the B.A.S.S. Elites? It was on ESPN and they had a clip showing his seasick Cameraman tossin' over the stern.
  13. Hello MWBROWN, I live in North Kingstown, R.I. I've been fishing for Largemouth in the Greatest Little State for 40 years. I too have been experiencing the same dilemma. On those bright windless days in clear water the bass like to suspend in areas on the north side of the lake or pond. To put it mildly they've got lockjaw. All they're doing is soaking up the sun's warmth. In all my years this early spring ritual ends the same. Cast near or over a sunning bass and they're gone in a flash. So you'll have to pick your days accordingly. Send me a P.M. if you'd like to talk fishing. Hookset
  14. Hey Guys, I have had good results from the Optimum Double Diamond.Has a great shim and swim action. For the 5" use a Davis Baits X Swim Lock 5/0. The 3.5" a Owner CPS 3/0 Hookset
  15. Hello Supermat, I checked out the Dirty Jigs. The Tour Level jigs are the best jigs I've ever seen. I mean they use up to ten colors of skirt strands per jig. The heads are hand painted in a three tone look.3-D eyes that match the skirt coloration. A+++ Hookset
  16. Catt man, that was an excellent definition. These types of structure can be an important way of finging bass. Sometimes the smaller and less noticed they are can turn out to be very productive. If you find one that gets overlooked by others, fish it at various times of the day or certain seasons because it may hold quality fish. Hookset
  17. Hello DeBassin, is this pond water a dark tannin color? Looks like tea color. In Dark water most pond life will be relatively shallow. If sunlight can not penetrate too deep most of the weed growth and insect, amphibians and prey fish will be in the upper 3rd of the water column. Try to find out what kind of bait fish or crayfish are in there. Then I would try very bright colored lures as well as lures with rattles or big blades. The bass will locate prey using their lateral line and smell rather than visual. goodluck and let me know if you have anymore Q's. Hookset
  18. Hello Members, I've been reading articles and fishing news on Bass Resource for a few months. I decided to join this forum because it is interesting, funny and a lot of good info is freely shared here. I've been bass fishing for 40 years. Have belonged to a handful of BASS Federation clubs in New England. I have fished from Maine to Florida Thru the southeast, Texas and Arizona. I love fishing small lakes and ponds using a oneman 11 foot cartop canoe. I've been a Bassmaster since 1976. Thanks in advance, Hookset on 3
