  1. I don't have an off season, so I can't buy things in the off season. I try to use some of the bad winter days to stock up on the homemade baits though.
  2. Completely subjective. What feels good in my hands is going to be uncomfortable in someone else's. What I like in a rod is going to be different from others. I personally have a 7' MH/F LTB that is one of my favorite rods I own. Lots of people out there think St. Croix rods feel tip heavy and don't like the reel seat on the LTB's. I'm just not sensitive enough to feel it I guess. I've used none of the others to compare it to though.
  3. It's going to vary bait by bait, even baits that are "the same" are going to be different. Get some suspend dots and/or strips, some different size hooks and split rings, maybe some thin wire for wrapping around hook shanks if you want to go old school, and you can make adjustments on the water. IMO, a perfectly suspending bait is really only important in really cold water, and I actually prefer a bait that sinks very slowly in really cold water so when a fish pulls up behind it and stares at it, suddenly it's on their nose and they react. A bait that sits perfectly still allows them to analyze it too much for me.
  4. When it's 14* outside with a wind chill of 0, got to make sure my co-angler stays warm.
  5. I soak mine in water, with the skin on (the whole thing intact actually, still alive, I don't eat fish ). I wish I could like fish. I've tried lots of times and continue to do so a couple times a year, just can't get the taste for it back.
  6. Being that I live within an easy drive of Kansas City, there's no reason for me to do any BBQing. Going out for BBQ tonight in fact So many different places to chose from all over the place with so many different styles. I've tried a lot of them, but haven't been to maybe a quarter of all the options.
  7. They're cheap for a big bait. Get them on Overstock tackle on sale and give one a try. I've caught fish on other Reaction Strike swimbaits, I'm sure it will work fairly well for the price.
  8. If you mean to shore fish Wolf Creek, you only have one option and that's right around the boat ramp, not really a great option right now while it's cold out. Once it warms up a bit I'm sure you can catch plenty of channel cat around the feeder right there. A couple surf rods would allow you to get out a bit further (still realistically only 3-5 feet of cold water right now), but that's what I would do if I was going to try from the bank there right now. The outlet at La Cygne is an option from the bank. You have to deal with lots of other anglers and lots of small fish, but there's some bigger ones there, mainly flatheads and channels but I've caught a couple blues in the outlet.
  9. They're great baits. They cast great in a spinning rod.
  10. The wife and I had a rare adult night out for the policeman's ball this weekend. I feel so weird wearing a suit, she dresses up much better than I do.
  11. Nothing scares me in this world more than the thought of something happening to my kids. So sad to hear.
  12. Got to wonder what these crazy white bass are thinking sometimes?! That's a 190 Plopper, all 7.5" and 2 3/4oz of it.
  13. The blue cats are nuts at Wolf Creek right now. If a guy was really targeting them, could probably do some serious damage.
  14. I learned to fish a worm with a 3.8:1 Lew's. Caught a lot of fish with it, but also lost a bunch of fish because of it. I'm glad to have the options we have now.
  15. Mine isn't quiet by any means, but it's not a high pitched sound either. Functions very well, so I can deal with the little noise.
  16. It's funny because I use an old 100B Chronarch for my bladed jigs and when some guys see/hear that they react like I'm using the reel in the picture.
  17. The 65 pointer is one I've caught a lot of fish with, but the last couple of years this little guy has been somewhat of a secret weapon for me.
  18. Thanks, it's far from finished. I haven't even started on the boat itself yet. Got to get the trailer squared away before I start work on that. Thankfully, the trailer is getting close and then I can start work on the boat. I did the dirty job I've been dreading on Monday. I pulled the hubs, cleaned the pounds of old grease out of them, removed the old bearings, races, and seals and replaced them with all new and got the hubs put back on. New tires and wheels are supposed to be here by Friday. Nothing fancy, just steel wheels and 13" tires. They're overkill for this boat and trailer, but tires are not the place to skimp on a boat trailer. The trailer just needs the wheels, lights and wiring that I already have, and a safety chain for the tongue and at the winch.
  19. Tale of 2 days for me this week. Monday I worked hard for 1 bite, and it did not end well. Tuesday I was catching so many fish I started trying to see what wouldn't work. When I was catching them on a 190 Plopper in 14 degree air temps in a foot of water, I knew the answer. They were tearing up my Donut Shad swimbait until the zebra mussels claimed it
