The packing has started...
Don't plan on bringing much Tuesday. My boat restoration won't be completely finished by the trip so a lot of places in the back and on the passenger side will be roped off or behind plywood walls. You'll have to wear a hard hat and no, you can't come up front and fish.... the wood is still curing..... yeah, that's it, the wood is still curing and can't handle the weight of 2 guys. Anyway, I've managed to save you about half the space in here. Seriously, it doesn't take that much tackle to catch a 1 lb bass does it?

Blind Pony near Marshall/Sweetsprings
Blind Pony Lake (Central Region) Information: (573) 884-6861 Blind Pony Lake will reopen to fishing on Sunday, March 1, 2009. The 195-acre lake, located six miles north of Sweet Springs on Highway ZZ in Saline County, was closed for renovation in February 2004. From October 2004 to October 2005, approximately 450,000 cubic yards of sediment were removed from the lake and fish habitat structures added to the west side. In 2006 and 2007, the lake refilled with water and was restocked with fingerling channel catfish, blue catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, and largemouth bass. In addition to the stocked fish, green sunfish were present in the lake basin and watershed, and have spawned several times. The lake's population has now grown to a size sufficient to sustain fishing pressure. Largemouth bass fishing should be fair. Many of the fish will be in the 12" to 15" protected range but there is an excellent prey base and the bass should grow fast. Bluegill fishing should also be fair. In a sample from May 2008, there were numerous bluegill from three to six inches. By 2009, these fish should be and inch or two longer and ready to test anglers. The sample from May 2008 also contained numerous green sunfish, with many exceeding seven inches in length. Fishing for green sunfish should be good in 2009. Fishing for channel catfish should be fair. The catfish are numerous but mostly on the small side. This will improve in a few years as the catfish that avoid harvest grow and the population continues to develop. There are some new regulations for the lake that will lessen the chances of an accidental introduction of zebra mussels. Zebra mussels are an invasive species that have caused numerous problems in other states and would be very disruptive for Blind Pony Hatchery, which uses the lake as a source of water. The big change will be that only Department boats may be used on the area. Boats and oars for use on the lake will be provided free of charge on a first come, first served basis; anglers must supply their own Coast Guard-approved personal floatation (life jackets) and may use their electric trolling motors on the MDC boats. In addition, bait transported or held in containers with water is prohibited. The length and creel limits will also be different than they were when the lake closed in 2004. The lake will reopen with a 12" to 15" protected slot for largemouth bass; anglers may harvest bass that are smaller than 12" and larger than 15" . Bass within the slot must be immediately released unharmed. Creel limits for channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish in the aggregate are 4, black bass 6, crappie 30, and all other fish up to statewide limits, but not to exceed 20 in the aggregate. http://mdc.mo.gov/fish/prospects/?m=13#a7

STX vs. Patriarch
;D Mag braking was introduced in the early 80's to attract those who have trouble knowing how to thumb a reel properly towards the end of the cast. Interesting that the STX uses it as it's main brake system, something that was originally designed in the early 80's for those who aren't real good at thumb braking. BTW, Most Patriarch users I know keep the mag brakes off most of the time and only use them throwing small baits or high profile baits into the wind.

Important announcement for "Road Trip" attendees.......
Mike, just want you to know I should be down at the lake as early as Sat before noon. If there's anything I can do in preparation down there that would help you or the group out let me know. I'm sure I can tear myself off the lake long enough to git R done.

After a week of bass fishing in KY, what makes you think you'll want to go home to snow, ice and cold temperatures?

STX vs. Patriarch
He's buying the reel for flippin and C riggin and putting it on a 7'6" flippin rod. Light lure casting is not an issue. BTW, the STX would probably throw a light weight bait further than the Patriarch IF you were comparing it to the WLP version. If you compare it to the LP version, it's not likely. The LP has a slotted aluminum V type spool which holds less line than the bigger spool on the STX. Also, if you set the STX up the way Micro suggests, with the spool tension turned up, the potential for throwing a bait further than an LP Patriarch reel is negated despite the heavier cent brake mech on the end of the patriarch spool end. In theory, a reel retailing for $200 shouldn't require a special set of skills to use, not when there are other reels out there than can perform the same tasks just as good with far more ease at the same price or less.

STX vs. Patriarch
Does Jennifer Aniston COME with the Patriarch, or does the Patriarch come with Jennifer Aniston? If she's include with the reel (I want the reel bag too), I'm borrowing $$$ today.......... ;D Actually, I believe Jennifer Aniston comes with John Mayer these days. :rimshot:

STX vs. Patriarch
A Revo S will save you money along with providing everything you need a reel to do for those 2 techniques.

STX vs. Patriarch
I go to a lake to fish, not stroke a reel all day because this is supposed to be a top line reel (even though others do far better for less) nor examine it under a microscope looking for tolerances. If that's you're cup of tea that's great. The question is castability. Not long casting but how well a reel works under all conditions with varying baits and wind. If you want a reel where you have to think like this all day.. Oh, wind increased 2mph, better tweak the drag. oh, wind shifted direction, better tweak the drag. Oh, this lure is 1/8oz more than the last bait, better tweak the drag and the spool tenion. Oh, this lure is a little larger profile than the last bait, better tweak the brake again. etc, etc. Then by all means get an STX. If you would rather concentrate on your fishing, or what your odds are of meeting Jennifer Aniston and marrying her or just about anything else, then get a Patriarch.

BC for 7yr old son?
Another reel to consider is the Pflueger Supreme. The reel is now out of production but you can find deals on Ebay on NIB's for around $65-70. Used, in excellant condition for around the same price. The profile of that reel is not bad. It's light and the dual braking is outstanding.
-
STX vs. Patriarch
Simple. After a day on the lake using both, I got serious and questioned why I was going to continue to use a reel that requires so much fiddling to cast correctly as conditions and lure weight/profile change vs. a reel that literally needs little adjusting regardless of what you have on. Heck, turn off the mag braking on the Patriarch (which I do most of the time) and the Cent. brakes work way better than the linear mag on the STX. Even the Revo S is a better caster than the STX and especially the SX. I think the Revo line is still a great line of reels but the braking system on the top line reels, SX, STX, Premier is pathetic. In reality, the mag braking used on the patriarch is the same mag braking system Garcia used for years on their LP reels and it works great. Why they switched to the linear mag system is beyond me.

Does anyone play Chess Titans that came with Vista??
I'd have a hard time admitting I was still using Vista.

STX vs. Patriarch
I used to own a few STX's, sold them and bought Patriarchs. A flippin reel is basically a winch. Good drag is the primary strong point for a reel fishing that method. In that case, save your money and get a Revo S, I still own one for that purpose. C riggin is slinging heavy rigs out long distances. Normally, your rig weight is in the 1 oz plus range. While the Patriarch blows the STX away in any sort of casting, the difference between the reels becomes less when you're throwing really heavy baits. In day to day casting, the STX can't hold a candle to the Patriarch in ease of casting. Both reels are well made and they are very, very similar in ergonomics.

Anyone ever added wood deck & framing to a Fiberglass boat???
I'm just in the finishing up stage of my redo. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1227978887/0#0 Before after before after All the wood used in this redo was standard plywood and framing lumber. It was coated with minwax helmsman urethane. The only piece of treated wood I used was a 1/2" piece of ply to cover over the front deck. I used mechanical fasteners for most of it. I'm guessing it's added around 70lbs to the front of the boat. I haven't had the big motor on the boat running yet to see how the driving characteristics have changed.
-
Summit or Patriarch?
Other than what's been mentioned already, not really. The Patriarch does have a more solid feel to it and is a little better on the hands sitting on the rod.
-
Summit or Patriarch?
I'd go with the 7.1 Patriarch. The drag is a little more stout vs. the Summit. I have both reels though and am very happy with both.

4th Annual BassResource.com Roadtrip!!!
I'll be glad to have ya aboard Mr. Wet Blanket. I've refrained from doing this Sherman but I'm Mr. Peabody and I'm going back in the way back machine to the year 1978 Jimmy Carter was president. Gas was probably under $1 a gallon. A honkin big bass boat sported a whoppin 150hp motor and was a whole 18' long. I was listening to Bob Seger among others when my club had a tournament in May of that year on KY lake out of Kenlake marina. This strapping 21 year old, who'd never been on the lake (nor have I since) managed catching this 5 1/2 lb bass. I wound up placing 2nd. I caught this on some old Garcia red round reel using an old Lews Speed Stick fiberglass rod with a 7 1/2" Fliptail worm. Certainly with the vast amount of equipment you own along with all the knowledge you've gained from this board, this should be no problem to top. Failure is not an option.

Fish Care In Your Livewell
I have 2 small speakers mounted in the livewell and pump Yanni music in all day long. Seems to really do the trick. Also, a good dose of Perry Como has put many a frisky fish into hypnotic type states.
