  1. Gotta go with a brine......usually brine mine for about a day or at least overnight then put it on the smoker.....best tasting and juiciest bird out there
  2. i prefer turkey but we always have both. To me though it is all about the sides....the meat of choice is an afterthought
  3. it's real good. I just adjust the chart speed to match my MPH. Usually a casual pace in my kayak runs about 3MPH
  4. I am running the Helix 5 SI unit...a little over your price range and i am still learning how to use it as best i can but so far it has done everything i wanted it to and then some.
  5. I thought to fish for stripers or shad in the james you needed some saltwater something or other lol I could be wrong though and obviously have been more often than not here lately lol
  6. if yo want waders that will last a lifetime get some high end simms and you will not be disappointed. i have a pair of frogg toggs i got basically for free and they are holding up well but i haven't been fishing in the creeks like i used to. When i was guiding small mountain streams i had a pair of simms that i beat the crap out of for 3+ years and never had an issue.
  7. never been there but there can always be a first time
  8. i bet Bigbill would know
  9. think of all the trout guys though, they need t get trout and freshwater licenses too for al their fishing and they don't fish for bass. Where i think it gets weird is when you get into saltwater. I know around here i need a saltwater license (i think) if i fish below the fall line but not above even if i have zero intentions of fishing for saltwater species.
  10. i would go somewhere else then. Also make sure it is on the trout designated waters list because i believe they are the only ones that require a trout stamp. And keep in mind that the trout stamp money also helps to keep the lake open for non trout fishermen as well.
  11. i wouldn't complain about that type of outing any day. I am hoping to get on a few jerk bait fish this weekend as well....swung by bass pro and picked up a few shadow raps
  12. nice day. that DT4 is money in rivers
  13. I don't know if they sell bait, i know the one here in Ashland VA doesn't sell bait but they might down there. There are a ton of good bait shops down there though. We usually stay near one called whalebone tackle right in Nags Head..
  14. awesome that would be great. From what i understand it can be difficult to find bait down there in the offseason but i guess that is why Gulp and fishbites are popular.
  15. I haven't had any issues with my rods in the kayak. Sure there are a few things to consider but no worse than any other type of vessel. There is a learning curve to kayak fishing but once you are comfortable in the kayak and get your gear where you want it, you probably won't have any issues. You just need to prepare for the places yo pare fishing. When i go fish smaller streams with lots of overhanging brush or trees i don't take as much gear and store my rods horizontally for the most part.
  16. Another reason to consider the type of fishing you actually do....that is the reason i got rid of my commander and bought an ATAK
  17. I just put up a post about this same thing lol I am trying to plan a trip though and don't have anything planned so i will be anxious to hear your reports.
  18. My fishing vessel doesn't dictate the rod i choose to use. Maybe if i was in an old school SINK it might come into play but with my last three kayaks i have never once thought of my kayak is a factor in choosing the rod to use. And great boat i bought one last spring and it is the best fishing kayak i have been in so far....it also has room for about 6 flush mount rod holders that are not in the way at all.
  19. Anyone head to the outer banks this time of year and do some surf fishing? I am trying to get a few buddies together to head down there this month or early december but have only fished there in the summer and that was with limited success. Anyone have any ideas or websites to check out? my searches have led to more vacation sites with their "fishing reports" than anything. Thanks
  20. I use paypal and have had some issues in the past but nothing recently. They are a pain to deal with in regards to fraud though. As far as hiding expenses from the wife, she doesn't ask and I don't ask her. Our bills are paid, we are saving money for a new house adn as long as all taht is taken care of first then i don't care what she spends and she doesn't care what i spend....

i don't use a net but have a pair of fish grips close by for toothy critters.
  22. i don't own a boat but i love my kayak. I do really like getting out on my dad's jet boat and fishing skinny water in the river though....
  23. are you for real? you honestly think a guy who is a pro can't fish a farm pond? that is where many if not all of the pros cut their fishing teeth so to speak.
  24. Pros in just about any sport are pros because of their skill. Equipment doesn't come into play as much as you think, especially when going against Joe Schmoes....I don't think i cold beat him but i also wouldn't even try. I see fishing like golf, you aren't competing against the other person as much as you are against the course/fish....
  25. Wind is always a pain but everyone is giving good recommendations. As far as loading and unloading goes my best purchase has been my trailer. I bought an older jet ski trailer and modified it for my kayak. Makes loading and unloading a breeze, especially at the end of the day.
