  1. My first few outings this year I lost very few fish . This past week I lost as many as I caught , in every way imaginable . The one that hurt was on a ribbit frog . It was a heck of an explosion , I paused before setting the hook and the hook-set was solid , too solid , line snapped .
  2. I finally started dropping the rod then count two Mississippis and that worked pretty well .
  3. One rod for big crankbaits or other heavier lures One rod for jigs and texas rigs two 7 foot med actions foe a wide variety of lures one spinning rod for lightweights .
  4. Yesterday was a tough day for me .The algae keeps getting worse on this little lake . After several hours of fishing I had 20 bass caught and two over fifteen inches . Texas rigged Lizards have caught the bulk of the bass on laydowns away from the scum . Then , for the first time I tried the Stanley Ribbit . I've had them for several years just never tied one on .I ended up catching five bass with it and three over fifteen inches . At first i lost a bunch of fish . Caught only one of my first seven hits but I figured it out .These lures came through the scum great and the hits were viscous . Now i need to figure out what hook I like .
  5. There you go but not just stick baits .
  6. The old Charlie Campbell spinnerbait from Blakemore was made for waking . It was a 1/2 ounce bait with a deeply cupped size 7 [ I believe] Colorado blade . I have not seen blades like that on any other lure . I won my first club tournament on that lure .
  7. You got me . This fish appears to be toothless .
  8. There are no rules when to use each . I just use whatever I feel like at the time .Most of the time that will be a Texas rig but at any time could substitute a jig , shakey head , tube...

  10. I had an idea for the Johnson spoon that i have not tried yet . Clip the weedgurad short , somehow get a barb in it for a keeper then attach a worm weedless ;
  11. I have one of these left. They can be gurgled across the surface but its kind of hard to keep the correct cadence . You should try that .
  12. Anything that sort of resembles a crawfish .I'm not too picky . I even use a plastic worm occasionally . After all , at one time the jig and eel was highly popular .
  13. That lake was exxtremely clear and on the final day Bill Dance caught a limit 40 foot deep .
  14. I use to ride my bike , carrying a fishing pole too, sometimes over ten miles one way , just to catch bull heads . I would put them in a gunny sack and head home . I made two stops on the way home and let the bag of fish soak in the water to keep them alive . Then when I made it home I dumped them out on the grass beside the house and they would still be kicking .
  15. I remember catching my first fish , roughly 60 years ago . My Dad told me it was a sunfish . It was brightly colored and I thought it had pieces of the sun in it . My avatar photo is around 1965 , the best day of fishing I had at that point . Caught those fish on a cane pole , bobber and worms . . Somethings never change . Look how I'm holding the stringers in the firt picture and one from seven years ago .
  16. A common nuisance is Chara algae . Most people mistake it as a weed but it has no roots . Locals call it Fox Tail .Lures can not be ripped free of it .Very difficult to bring a lure through .Still , it holds fish . I catch lots of bass around it mainly on a buzzbait or spinnerbait fished close to it or over it but not though it .The only lures I have used to fish through it are weightless worms and weedless frogs . A Johnson spoon might work , if not allowed to sink to deep , I just havent tried it .
  17. Rayo used a Manns Jelly Worm , Manns Spinnerbait , and Norman crankbait to win the 73 classic .
  18. With the exception of super deep crankbaits , most of the lures I use today were available in the 70's . I dont think the lures would make much of a difference at all . To compete with them , a person has to be as good as them .
  19. Berkely Dredger 25.5 .
  20. They would probably laugh at my ridiculously long rods .
  21. I have no rule of thumb . Although top waters work well in low light conditions , I may stick with them all day .
  22. Do you know what kind of weed you are dealing with ? If its Chara, You will probably need to go with a weightless worm or frog . There are no other choices that I know of . I fish around and over it with a spinnerbait and buzzbait but not through it . Thats from a boat though .
  23. The baseball field here in town is underwater . Even the wall that surrounds the field is under water . I wonder if there are bass holding on the pitchers mound .
