Hey Brent, old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative. And remember... age mellows some people; others it makes rotten. Unfortunately you can't go home again.

Economic Stimulus Package?
I didn't mean to make this political. I was just wondering if others had heard this also. I spoke to a CPA today, and he said they just attended a meeting on this. That it basically is a way of getting what the federal government plans to pay out on the normal tax returns in spring 2009, and back into the hands of individuals around 10 months earlier. The influx of cash will help stimulate the economy in May/Jun 2008 rather than Apr/May of 2009. Unfortunately if this is the case, I won't be spending the money, but rather put it into a money market for about 10 months because I keep my payment of federal income taxes close to what is actually owed, and usually get back little refund. And the really bad part will be telling the wife her plans for the money will have to be put on hold. Sorry mods if I got the blood pressure raised a few points.

Economic Stimulus Package?
I don't know all the details, but has anybody else heard that the economic stimulus package, where the government will be sending out checks of $600 individual, $1,200 for couples, plus added amounts for children, is actually just an advance against next years 2008 tax return? That the American people aren't really getting additional money, just basically advance money against what taxpayers gets on the average in their 1040 tax refund?

Fishing Strategies/Goals for 08 season?
1. With the spring fishing season approaching soon, I will cure my procrastination problem... just you wait and see. 2. Realize that if people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. 3. Accept the fact when I pit my intelligence against a fish and lose... that I had it coming. 3. And to stop allowing the truth to interfere with a really good fishing story.

With the possible exception of George, the other two will fast find the next best rod and reel combination know to man. Proving once again that its not necessarily the rod... but the rodholder.

Open apology to Ronnie Alpster
Well Avid, others of us are also guilty as charged. Recently I posted what I thought were two humorous and semi-innocent opening lines in a response to one of your posts, which I guess initiated your post to be deleted/modified. This was never my intent. I felt bad that it was taken the wrong way by various individuals SORRY! I will try and keep my sometimes poor excuse for humor in check from now on.

Did you have another hobby besides fishing?
I build Bean Bag Sets for friends and family. Bean Bags (different game then Corn Hole Toss which is popular in the midwest) is a family picnic game popular in this section of PA. Several years ago my wife complained because she had looked around and couldn't find any of the old quality type of sets from many years ago, only the cheap crappy new varieties. She tracked one down in Philadelphia that a relative had and got the dimensions from a set that was about 50 years old. When I started building them, I originally made them with PA Dutch Hex Signs, but stopped making them that way because everyone wanted custom designs Phillies, Flyers, Eagles, Norte Dame, Nascar, Clowns, Air Force, Penn State, Red Sox, etc. I build the sets and make up the stencils, and my wife hand paints everything with 3 coats of paint (can you say overkill), and she also makes the bags. About 15 hours of work goes into every custom set.

NE PA early spring bass
It's been my experience that if you go fishing right after ice-out here in NE PA, using live minnows is your best bet at catching bass. Unless I'm taking my kids out, I do not use live bait, but I do understand my chances of catching bass that early are reduced. With that said, if I'm out this early in NE PA (which involves beating the bank as I don't get the boat out till April), my choices of lures (I only take a small lure pack with me and one rod) include: LC Live Pointers, Original Floating Rapalas with suspend-dots, 4 straight worms fished on Slider Jigs, 3 grubs, and 1.5 slider grubs. Personally, I have not had much luck with tubes or jigs that early fishing from the bank. My plastics colors will be black, smoke, pumpkinseed and watermelon w/red flake. When I'm fishing from the bank this early, I'm looking for areas in which the bottom is predominately represented by chunk rock, with some larger rocks in the mix, and should be near spawning areas. Also, I want to be able to cast to breaklines or areas that drop to a little deeper water, so I'm using a 7' spinning rod with 8lb line. This experience is based on 20+ years fishing in March at Beltzville Lake and Mauch Chunk Lake. Just be advised, your experiences might be dratimaticly different, and only use this information as one soucre of advice/opinion in your overall early season tactic.

For you spoon guys
I will assume from the original post, that the person asking the post is mainly questioning jigging spoons. Although I don't consider myself an expert at anything fishing (otherwise I would be a professional), I have been using jigging spoons since 1991 as a main part of my arsenal in fishing lakes (both fun and tournament) in PA and NJ. My answer/opinion is only intended to represent my experience and applications of jigging spoons. How about that as a qualifier in posting an opinion? I have tried many makes and types of jigging spoons over the years. Cheap, expensive, current, discontinued, loads of colors, etc. I've never used very large spoons for jigging. Recently, I have narrowed my current choices down to two types (for the lakes I fish), and in two colors. I currently like the Kastmaster and the Hopkins (including the BPS Strata Spoon) types. I think they each deliver a different feel. The Kastmaster is my choice when I want a slower fall rate, and the Hopkins when I am not concerned with rate of fall but I want a better feeling of the lure on the end of my line. I catch both LM & SM in equal numbers on both types. I use gold in overcast conditions and silver in sunny conditions. Something I just started last year was removing the split ring from the spoon where you attach the line. Instead I now thread the line though the top hole and then attach the line to a red treble hook. I like the results I've been getting so far, but feel it is too soon to recommend this application as being better. One thing I notice in novice jigging spooners is the problem when the spoon hangs up on the bottom they tend to break a lot off. The technique I use with success is to get the end of your rod directly over the hung up spoon, with the line tight when holding the rod at 10 o'clock. Then move the rod to 8 o'clock allowing slack in the line (slack is key to getting the spoon unhung). I then shake the rod tip vigorously between 8 and 10 and very fast. More times than not the spoon pops loose. (I hope I explained that correctly) And thanks Rolo, that list sure brought back some memories. Do you remember what that Mann's jigging spoon was called? Sudden-expertism
I'm curious, could you provide some examples where you deem advice is bad? And also explain why the advice was bad, as a public service to us all. The post was about as subtle a reminder as a sledgehammer to the temple, and should be explained further. Good point though about thinking first about the posters needs before interjecting opinions, but you can't change human nature. It is hard to police or regulate public "opinion." This is a free and public forum. And free advice is worth exactly what you pay for it. Any poster should take responsibility for their own actions if they decide to act upon any free advice given to them. I think any poster with just a little common sense, after reading several posts in any related topics, can ascertain who are the real experts here. Maybe we should have a new mod The Expert Police. They can interject and shoot down any posts deemed bad advice. (I don't really think we should have it, I'm just keeping in tone and sarcasm with the first two paragraphs of the post that started this).
