I have a Shakespeare Sigma spinning reel on an Ugly stick I've had 40+ years. I've kept it 'just because'.

Checked off NOVEMBER today 'over the bridge' on the Cape. The big ones were hiding, but I managed a bunch of perch and smallmouth. A 2.8" on an underspin and V110+1 jr did the trick. Grabbed one pick and one white perch too. Big SMB was just under 2# and big YP was just over 1.5#. Winds were 10 mph, sustained, with gusts over 15. Tough on a kayak, but everything calmed down by 4:30 ish. Water temps were 58.x and air pressure was 30.2. I'm still on track to catch fish in Mass in open water every month again. I'm sure December will be blades, Neds, and deep cranks. Agreed, they were active today. GGGRRRRHHHHHHH ... 😡. ..... I forgot I had these in the truck .....

I fished with some of my friends in my neighborhood at Eaton's Pond in Braintree. I dug up worms from my parents' garden and as I got older got lures from Kings Department store and BraWey Sports. I forget what rod I had, but I have a Shakespeare Sigma spinning reel on an Ugly stick I've had since JHS/HS (?). As we got older we rode our bikes to Wampatuck State Park and fished Aaron Res., even camping by the shoreline a few times. This was in the late '70s, early '80s. Compared to today, it was very innocent and simple. There was no YT or Tackle Warehouse. The rest of the world didn't matter, we were just out having fun.

Sorry, it was 70* the last couple days in MA. Fishing’s been S L O W, but I’m still tooling around in my convertible.

Firstly, welcome to the forum. Though my fall bite's also been off this season, my biggest fish were caught on reaction baits. I fish primarily South Shore to the Cape. My best jerkbait is yellow perch colored. My best crankbaits are mixed, but mostly bluegill or Rapala's Rootbeer Shad. Sometimes the smallies like anything chartreuse. When they're not hitting reaction baits, I've caught fish on green pumpkin/red flake jigs and orange/brown Senkos. If your kayak is a pedal drive, try trolling a crankbait around your waters. You'll locate fish pretty quickly. Read through and follow this thread: It's got 12 years of fishing info in this area, by some very good anglers. Good luck with the rest of the season. It'll be time for blade baits soon enough.

You know my comments about leaving my boat at home and taking my convertible out.... yeah, well I did. It's a '68 Buick GS400, original motor, transmission, etc. It was really nice yesterday so I took it to a friend's shop. We talked for a while about our cars and when I hopped in mine to leave I turned the key and NEVER heard such bad noises from a V8 starter! Guy and his mechanic gave me a push and got me bump started (only members that have standard transmissions know about this...). I got it home and dropped the starter this morning. The aluminum starter's nose cone was broken. Luckily the flywheel is fine. It sure was a good thing I didn't take the car to NH/VT! Though I likely would have found someone to help bump start me to get me home. I have another starter coming tomorrow. And NO, I didn't catch any fish today.

That was my experience this weekend. The only pond I saw any signs of life was the third one in NH.

I fished a New Hampshire pond instead of heading back to VT. Like VT, it's known to give up big bass. It's a little over 100 acres and looks textbook: reeds, weeds, rock ledges, drop offs and lots of laydowns. Eight hours of casting and covering it twice over, I came up with a Fallfish (!?!?!?!) on a Ito Wasagi Vision 112+2 and a couple hits from Pickerel on a wacky Senko. I saw one heavyweight bass next to a fallen white birch and another 'light heavy' in the same area, but they weren't interested in anything I tossed at them. The weather was just like Saturday & Sunday. The air pressure dropped to 30.1 and water temps were 56.x - 58.x. I was supposed to fish NH/VT today, but after the last three trips out, decided to pack it up and go home. My convertible is in the garage ... Good luck to everyone getting out there.

I'll pre-rig if I'm going to one of my 'regular' ponds. If I'm going to a new pond, or one I've only fished a couple times I'll wait until I get there and look around.

I carry 6 rods on my kayak too. @Saltysmalljaws got me into jerkbaits a few years ago and I use a dedicated setup. I have an older 6’9” Kistler KLX and a 6’10” Shimano Expride for JBs. They’re both medium power. I prefer the KLX because it just feels better in my hand. I use the KLX for lighter cranks when I need to B/C of it’s mod-fast action. The choice is really up to you. A V110 is a touch light for a MH rod. Especially if it’s got a lot of backbone.

That was the case yesterday in NH and today in VT. I managed a 3# LMB in 20’ on a DT20 and a few dinks on a topwater Rapala. I marked lots of fish, and threw the entire Tackle Warehouse catalog again and couldn’t coax another bite. Looking at it after, the formula was simple: bluebird and high pressure … It was my first trip to VT. I’m heading back tomorrow since I took today to run it slowly with the side scan. Lesse what happens.

Fished in mid NH today. Water temps were 57.x - 59.x. Air pressure was 30.4 and about as bluebird as you can get. I threw the whole Tackle Warehouse catalog in 3 to 30+ feet and came up empty. May as well have fished in my bath tub. Talked to two guys on another boat. They had live scope and had only 2 fish between them for the day. It was one of those days I should have left the boat home and drove around in my convertible all day. I’m booked to fish VT & NH the next three days. I might just forget it and ride around in my convertible if the weather’s gonna be like it was today. Not worth the gas & traffic. BTW, where’s this big fall blitz I read so much about? I can’t seem to find it in the Northeast.

Firstly, thank you to @Glenn and @Jigfishn10 for changing this thread's name to include NEW ENGLAND. @Jigfishn10 started this thread in 2012 and it's been a bit stale lately so I asked that it include New England to try and liven it up again. So you members around New England, dust off your keyboards and let us know how fishing is in your area. My trip to the Cape the last two days turned out pretty forgettable. I fished three lakes, and came up with a few dink SMB/LMB, and some 3# plus pickerel at the second pond. I don't know where the fish went, but I couldn't find much of anything for bait, even at the pond I fished a few weeks ago that was 'Red Bull' alive. I fished dirt shallow to 30' with minimal success. My front Lowrance dropped its 2D and after plugging in my kayak's transducer and control unit I determined it was the Elite Ti2-9. I called Lowrance and got a human. My 2D came back when I turned my AUTOPILOT off. Strangely, I never turned it on. Regardless, I finally made a few casts and got a yellow perch at the bottom of a drop off in 40' with a blade bait. Water temps were 59.x - 62.x and air pressure started at 29.9 Wednesday and finished at 30.4 this morning. I'm heading to NH/VT Sunday to Tuesday. I'm fishing waters I've never fished before. Hopefully it'll be fun. Best of luck to everyone still getting out.

I've tried it a few times without success. It should work, in theory, and the proof I have is that I catch a lot of fish while trolling a crankbait while pedaling across a pond/lake with my kayak. I average about 3 mph on it. That's got to be close to what a 8.X:1 reel would get you.
