When Using Flouro....
I can and do use both, a Shimano 50/51 is a good reel for it... I have thrown 6 to 8 on about every baitcaster I ever owned..... I prefer spinning, but it works both ways.... For Drop rigs, also depends on if it's really light work or 1/2 & up rigs, I assume you refer to light, what weight you using?

Lure And Line
Lighter line also can increase action on some baits... Years ago reading a line study hypo, indications were anything over about 10 pd. line would create noise, as well as additional drag... But I don't see drag being a issue, generally in freshwater, but primarily saltwater... I have always used light line 10 and under for most tactics and 20 for close combat apps.. Though there are exceptions of course....

Check with you're county land surveyor, if they are worth a grain of salt they should have a usgs topo. On the lake and surrounding area, then again, maybe not.

Catching Bass Chasing Schooling Threadfin
Don't feel so bad.... With thousands of Baitfish around, it's not so unheard of.... Try dropping a soft plastic into the pod... And just let it float/ shimmy thru the baitfish and maybe you will pick up some fish or.. A bigger fish.... A drop shot tube rig has great action too... As well as other baits ( soft plastic )
-
Wacky Rigs ?
Depending on What plastic you use? 20 zoom trick worms, are often on sale/ clearance sometimes buy one get one free.. I get them on average about $2.90 a bag....soft plastics tear/ always have.... Senkos? @ over $8 a bag? Yea, that could sting... But there are very good alternatives avail.. Plenty of Rigging methods and open hook rigs are always easier on hook penetration / light line fishing.

Misconceptions About Catching Big Bass!!
I don't even, not even, slightly, believe Catt or Raul or myself or hundreds of fisherman are Wrong... These Basic fundamentals are well know and have been proven over decades... California's force feeding of Rainbow trout to the non- native FLMB... I dare say, Mr. Doug Hannon has caught more Giant FLMB than most anyone and did so in a natural environment, not in a state sponsored soup kitchen. And primarily, on a 7" strait- tail soft plastic worm... In his early days Native Golden Shiners. So I know the whole argument that small baits are only occasional Big or Giant Fish catchers is bogus....

Fishing In Moderate Current
^^ That's Exactly Right, in river fishing you are absolutely going to loose baits, plain and simple, cut and dried...

Premature Hook Sets?
Largemouth Bass, don't play with a plastic worm, they open and suck that bait in to eat/ swallow.. That's it. Plastic ( soft ) and Jigs? Are so diffrent from each other, on jigs? Yea, a faster hookset is usually needed... If you are just learning to T-rig a plastic worm, you need to quit jerking on every little bump... There is structure you are going to feel as well. Watch you're line, I have let fish run 10 seconds on plastics then jerk... They just hang on way long... Not so much on a jig though. Bluegills can and do harass plastic worms.. You got to learn the Diff.... Feel you're line too, it's not so scientific as soo many want you to believe. It's nature, fish got to ( want to ) eat... The plastic worm is the best bait you will ever use.
