The Breakout Bass
Yea. Its not like that bass didn't earn it. He wasn't just waiting around for his freedom. Consider him the Spartacus of bass.

Hey Blue, I hear girls are more patient than boys so it should be easier to teach them when to set the hook. Congrats Uncle.

preventing cabin fever
If your talking about the Susquehanna, I know people who fish it up to mid December depending on the water temps and height. My tips would be find deep wintering holes, use long, sensitive rods and live bait on a brightly colored walleye jig. The long rod helps with line dragging on the water. I know a guy who uses a 9 foot noodle rod (also used when salmon fishing) and keeps the rod tip high. Less line on the water means less pull or drag on the lure which means you can move the bait slower which is important in the winter months. Smallies aren't moving far for food. Match the weight of the jig with the current (this will take trial and error) so as to not get snagged on every drift and allow the jig to bump along the bottom. Hope this helps.

New mojo bass. SNAPPED!
Excellent article. Very informative and gives lots of examples. I didn't know I was doing a few of those things that are bad for rods.

Drove to a state park yesterday only to wonder into a bass fishing tournament. Got there just as it was starting to drizzle and the boats were coming in. There were some nice size lunkers caught. Most of the bags I saw weighed in ranged from 12-18 pounds.

More blackbears oh my
Unfortunately, around where I live the PA Game Commission thinks it is a good idea to release nuisance bears they trap in the Poconos. It seems people who have vacation homes in the Poconos like to have all kinds of wildlife in their backyards. Including bears. So they put out sweets like honeybuns for them. But when they start getting scared by the bears and how intrusive they can be, such as clawing at a homes back door or ripping through a metal garbage can like it was a red Solo cup, they call the Game Commish and they trap the bear and bring it down here where there are less people and more places to roam. Causes havoc when you see a bear wandering down the main street of your town just looking for a meal.

What doors has bass fishing opened for you?
The door it opened for me was the front door. It gets me out of the house when otherwise I wouldn't. It also gives me something to look forward to during those cold, bitter winters we have in PA.

RIP Burt Reynolds
Cannonball Run and The Longest Yard were great movies but nothing beats Smokey & The Bandit. That is the movie I'll always remember as being the iconic Burt Reynolds movie.

Fingers/Hand Issues - too much fishing?
Carpel tunnel and tendonitis in my right hand is keeping me from enjoying the end of summer. Not something I'd wish on my worst enemy.

Tonight I discovered my greatest fear.
Been stabbed a few times myself, trying to play pro fisherman. Just took 3 or 4 times and I was leart real good. If I forget the pliers, I forget the trebles.

Hurricane Season has Arrived
Hoping everyone is staying safe and being careful. Could never understand why people stay put when a hurricane or even tropical storm comes through. I guess you just got to be used to it.

Flipping pads problem
Gotta say, that's the problem. By the time you detect the bite they are wrapped around a lot of lily pads. Stick'em hard and fast and as early as possible. That is how you get the advantage on heavy pad fish. If they get in deep I keep pressure on them and try to get a hand on them quick before they get off. Warning!!! Don't do this if you live in gator country unless you like people calling you Lefty.

If you live on a farm you grow up knowing that one of those animals can be your dinner. My aunt had a pet rabbit named "Emily". Well...one day "Emily" ran away when my aunt wasn't home. That night the family had stew. Yup. Nothing is safe on the farm.
