Sun Protection
When I'm fishing I hate having sunscreen on all over me. I fish out of a kayak and am very exposed to the sun so I prefer to wear pants and a long sleeve shirt, even on really hot days. I may still put some sunscreen on the back of my hands and my ears but that's about it. I try to keep the rest of myself covered. I lost a good friend to melanoma a couple years ago, I don't want to see it happen again.

Budget kayak that I will fit in.
Check out the Sun Dolphin Boss 12 or it's rebranded name, Ozark Trail Pro Angler 12. Walmart has had them on sale for as low as $379. It's the best looking new kayak I've seen in that price range.

Yakers what kayak do you run?
Pelican Catch 120 bought 2016. Pros: Light weight at 69 lbs. Easy to customize. Comfortable seat. Easy to stand in. Stable. Affordable. Bought mine new for $599. Cons: Doesn't have gear tracks but the new models do. I added my own. I don't think it's as fast as other models. I don't think it tracks as well as other models. Doesn't have the ability to pedal.

**The Official 2018 Ice-Out Thread**
Things were looking great here in Iowa two weeks ago but then we got hit with a big snow storm last Monday. This week things are looking up again and the snow is almost all gone again. Lakes are starting to open up in the middle part of the state while the southern half of the state has open water. I think the IA/MN border is still froze over. We're finally getting to the point where the overnight temps should stay above freezing which will be huge.

Fishing Kayak?
Congrats on the new purchase, I think you'll love it. I think people have used the C-Tug cart with it just fine and there are some others that work. I recommend joining the Pelican Catch 120 group on Facebook. You'll find all the info you need there for what works with the Catch series of kayaks.

Fishing Kayak?
I have The Catch 120 and I think it's a great kayak for the price. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Catch 100. I would recommend waiting for a sale if you have the patience. I was able to get my Catch 120 for $599 during a Father's Day sale.

What percentage of your fishing tackle purchases are made online?
I'm probably 95% online. There are not many options very close to me to buy tackle and those options don't have a great selection or prices. Every time I go to Cabela's I act like I'm going to buy a bunch of stuff but rarely end up getting anything because everything is full price. I can get almost any lure for a $1 less from TW than at Cabela's. I still will buy stuff from Cabela's but even then it's online when I find stuff on sale. The only time I buy in store is if I see some discounted stuff or I'm on a fishing trip and need something now.

Trolling motor for kayak
Join the Catch 120 group on Facebook and you'll get plenty of feedback from other owners there. There are some great trolling motor install on them. There is also a guy who custom makes trolling motors for kayaks.

Wind canceled kayak trip
20 mph winds are my limit and I rarely go out in them. It's just too big of a pain and incredibly frustrating. If I know there are places on a lake where I can be out of the wind I'll try it. Last year I went out on a cold, rainy, spring day on a small river. I paddled up river to a location to start and it took about 20 minutes since it was into the current and the wind. Since it was a small river lined with trees it was like a wind tunnel. On my float back it was miserable trying to fish. Anytime I got hung up on something it was incredibly frustrating trying to get the snag out. WIND SUCKS

The latest sale thread
The discount works just fine but you can only save a maximum of $50. So if you wanted to get 20% off of an expensive trolling motor you wouldn't get 20% off, you'd get $50.

The latest sale thread
For a maximum of $50 also. For those of you wanting to save more on larger purchases on something like a trolling motor.

Just to let y’all fellas ...
Yep! I'm off early tomorrow and going to drive around to see what locations have open water. I remember last year being able to get my kayak out on the water in the middle of February. I think it was in the 60s that day and I saw some girls out sun bathing. Doesn't take much to get Iowans out from their cabin fever.

How many of you use more than 3 rods consistently on a kayak?
I usually carry 6 rods on my kayak. It can seem like a lot but I like being able to switch between multiple different lures and techniques quickly.

Tackle box questions
I mainly fish from a kayak so I have a milk crate behind my seat with 4 to 5 tackle containers in it. I have one large one for all my crankbaits. The rest are regular size, I think they're the 3600 size. I have one with my top water lures, one with swim jigs and chatterbaits and one with terminal tackle like hooks, jigs, sinker and other random stuff. I have one tall box for my spinners. All of my soft plastics go into zip lock bags. If I'm going on a boat I have a Rubbermade type tote with a lid on it that keeps all my gear. If I'm fishing a shoreline or going trout fishing I use a tackle bag with some boxes in it.

Minnesota Fishing Reports - 2018
I don't know too many people that have MacBride on their list of places to go but there are a lot of people who fish it. For the last 5 years I've gone on a trip to fish the Alexandria area lakes. Last year was our best year for big bass. We had two over 6lbs and probably a dozen over 4lbs. Love that area.

This lake will not beat me (again)!!!!!
Mississippi River can be that way. Always catch fish but focusing on bass can be hard.

When do you fish a Chatterbait?
I throw the chatterbait in all circumstances and fish it multiple ways. If I'm not having luck with it, which rarely happens, I then switch it up. I always have a rod with a chatterbait on it though. It works best for me in murky water though while the spinner usually has more success in clear water.

Inflatable Kayak
You'd have to jab it in pretty forcefully. Good quality inflatables are pretty tough.

Pelican 120x Kicker Angler Kayak
That kayak must be specifically made for Costco because I can't find it by that name anywhere and have never heard of Kicker. Looks just like the Strike 120x Angler. I bet they had them specially made just for them. Ordered a ton of them and are able to sell them at a very low price. Big box stores do this type of thing all of the time with numerous products.

NEW KAYAK VIBE - What to Add on it?
If you want to start off with spending a little then you can get a battery like this from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Battery-Lowrance-Elite-3x-CHARGER/dp/B019X6ODEA/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1519071718&sr=8-7&keywords=fish+finder+battery I started with something like that 5 years ago and it worked for me. I'd get about 6 hours out of it before it would die. It's now junk and will replace it this year. This year I'm going to spend more money on a Nocqua Lithium 10ah battery. As for other accessories, I didn't want to drill holes all over my kayak putting accessories in place I wasn't sure I'd be happy with so I installed a few gear tracks. This allows me to move gear to multiple locations without worrying it's permanent or leaving holes. I put my fish finder, transducer and rod holder on the tracks and I can take them all off when hauling it. I don't have a cart but it seems the most popular ones are the C-Tug and the Boonedocks landing gear. I'd get out and fish with with just a few things to start with then get a good feel for what you want to add after being on it a few times.

Inflatable Kayak
I first bought an inflatable Sea Eagle boat thinking it would be perfect for me. I used it once. As handy as it was to store it was still a pain setting up and putting away. I also felt ridiculous in it for some reason. I ended up going to a roto-mold style kayak like J Francho just mentioned and it's the best fishing decision I ever made.

How often do you fish?
I'm a little over an hour north of MacBride. Most of the big lakes are well over an hour away from me so I don't get to them. I fish Lake Delhi, a local sportsman's pond and the Mississippi River by Dubuque and Guttenberg mostly. I did make a trip to Lost Grove last year and plan to again this year. I also want to make a trip to Belva Deer and Brushy Creek at some point but they're both over 2 hours away from me. I'm thinking about fishing the KBF Open tourney in LaCrosse this summer. I may also fish the IKA tourney at MacBride in August too. I have multiple trout streams all within 20 miles of me so it's easy for me to go anytime.
