  1. ditto. should've never sold mine. how about a coleman scanoe with outriggers? I have a buddy that fishes out of one and it's easy to car top and cheap
  2. leaky hatches, broken seats, and warped hulls. Bass Pro even updated the listings on most of the Ascend kayaks so they could remove all the old negative reviews. Perception, Old town, and Emotion just to name a few manufacturers who make a solid product in the sub $600 price range
  3. I disagree. I've heard many negative things about Ascend kayaks and there are better options out there for $550
  4. seriously? A v-hull is ideal over a jon but I'd be more comfortable with a little kid in a boat with some free board than on a bass boat. And again we are talking about very small lakes.
  5. Ok I briefly looked at the first few pages of the NH craigslist and came up with these 3 gems. All from this century with newer 4 stroke motors that should be bulletproof. no rotted wood to worry about and low maintenance. Just add a 12v transom mount trolling motor, battery, and fish finder to it and you're still under your budget. http://nh.craigslist.org/boa/5541760670.html http://nh.craigslist.org/boa/5541513181.html http://nh.craigslist.org/boa/5540879203.html I know these aren't what you are envisioning or want long term, but they are "starter boats" to get your feet wet. I know guys who fish 2,000+ acre lakes with boats like these and are better fisherman than most. the best part is when you are ready to upgrade, you can sell these easily for about what you pay for them. If you buy one of those 30 year old money pits, you're going to be lucky to get $500 when you trade it in (if the motor hasnt blown up by then)
  6. the Emotion would be light years better than that sundolphin. you might also consider a sit inside. old town makes some good models in your price range
  7. dude, you're overthinking this too much and combined with your lack of boat experience, I feel like you are going to make a mistake with your purchase. around here, guys have tournaments where they only use electric trolling motors with 2 guys in a boat. my starter boats were 14ft aluminum v-hulls with 3 bench seats and a 30lb thrust trolling motor. these boats are more than capable for 80 acre puddles you'll be fishing. why do you even care about speed on these tiny lakes you can get across in 5 minutes? a 9.9hp on a narrow 14ft v-hull is going to be like the equivalent of a 50HP on a 17ft bass boat. this is the kind of boat you should be looking for.
  8. your butt is gonna be wet in that thing. you can get some much better kayaks used if you wait and look around
  9. If you are really fishing ponds and small lakes of that size, why do you need these boats with 50HP motors? I just got back from fishing an 80 acre lake in my kayak and I paddled across the thing in less than 10 minutes. You just need a basic boat with a 25HP or less motor. Heck you could even get away with a big electric motor. Minn Kota makes an electric outboard for under $1,000.
  10. you'll get 10 to 1 for the PQ because it's been out forever and is a good reel. I like the supreme and I believe it is a little smaller and lighter than the PQ
  11. I really like the Eyecon 7' ML rod and dont think I'd want to go lighter than that. even though it is SCII it is light and well balanced with a 30 size Pflueger supreme. The Mojo bass line is very limited in spinning rod options compared to the Eyecon.
  12. Blizzard like conditions at my house earlier today. weather has been all over the place the last 2 months. Heading to florida this weekend, hopefully we'll get some more stable weather when i get back
  13. regular. i think the long is for fly fisherman
  14. At 230lbs, the tarpon 100 is going to be a bad choice for you. even the tarpon 120 I wouldnt recommend for you. check out the perception striker 11.5 or look for a used wilderness systems ride 115.
  15. The H12 is just a copycat of the native ultimate and WS commander kayaks. I'd look at those two models before getting an Ascend
  16. I have 3 regular presidents, 3 supremes, and 1 president LE. all are 30 size except for one 25 size supreme. The president LE is way lighter than the regular president and pretty close to the supreme. I'd probably go with a supreme for the same price after rebate, but for the price it is still a good reel. maybe just pick the one you think looks better or matches your rod better.
  17. maybe try a musky spinning rod http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Musky-Innovations-Bull-Dawg-Predator-Spinning-Rod-7-Heavy&i=789289
  18. you gotta take into account fuel, starting battery, trolling motor batteries, seats, gear and everything else inside the boat. my 16.5ft lund is about 2,000lbs fully loaded. i think your best bet is going to be a utility boat or small tiller.
  19. I have the 3600 size of that bag and I like it
  20. the other problem with 30lb in my experience is that if you get a backlash with a lure that weighs more than ~1/2 oz, you are probably going to lose that lure.
  21. 30lb can be a little thin for a baitcaster and dig into the spool or backlash if you're not experienced. I prefer 40lb and up on baitcasters, otherwise I use mono of fluoro is smaller lb tests.
  22. turn it upside down and leave it in the sun for a while. when it heats up it might fix itself. this technique works on kayaks so I think it is worth a shot on a plastic jon boat
  23. They are both good but I'd go with the S. I learned on a gen 1 Revo S and now have 2 of the Gen 3 Revo S and 2 of the Gen 3 Revo SX. The Revo S's are so easy to cast and i've never even messed around with the breaks on them. The SX are lighter but I feel like the S matches up better with a veritas rod.
  24. if it is a fast action, I dont see why not.
