  1. Dominion Dan don't give up. Jigs are by far my favorite thing to throw, and they catch some monsterous fish. Take only a jig with you and don't throw anything else til you catch one on a jig. Once you do, they'll start coming faster and faster, and bigger. It took me like 1 month to catch a fish on a jig, now I can't put it down.
  2. Awesome!! Don't forget, jigs aren't just for cold water. I also agree with you on the bites, not too hard to detect.
  3. I'm with you on the black foam. I love it. That's a beautiful set up you got there! I'm going to be getting a new carrot stix and zillion soon, that'll make 4 black foam gripped rods ;D
  4. hey deadeye, I had huge problems with my line breaking at the knot but it was because I was tying a palomar knot. Sure alot of guys are gonna come after this and say "Oh I tie a palomar knot and haven't broken off once" but I'm telling you, once I switched to a san diego jam knot I honestly haven't broken off one fish. Give it a try.
  5. 14.7lbs!! Could you PM me a pic if you have one? If you're wondering if he's tellin the truth, he is. He is probably one of the best fisherman on this board.
  6. I've done it before and had some luck. It was down in about 45 feet of water and with a 1/2 ounce carolina rig. 1st cast caught a 3 lber. Haven't thrown it all that much though, once or twice.
  7. No problem let me know how it works out for you. Quanjig might chime in on how he fishes them too, and he does really well with them.
  8. I crank it until I know it is down all the way then I just let it sit there for a good 10 seconds or so. Now you have to figure out how the fish want it. Sometimes it's one jerk every 10-30 seconds, sometimes it's 4 jerks then a 2 second pause. I usually do best with ripping them once or twice and just killing it for 10 seconds. After a pause, when you go to rip it, they will be hooked up.
  9. sssssshhhhhhhhhhh ;)
  10. I personally have never caught anything on a jointed pointer either. My favorite luckycraft jerkbait to throw is a 100sp in chartruese shad. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
  11. Looks like I'm gonna have to get out there soon. I just got my car back from the shop, it's time I get to fishing.
  12. Nice lookin toads you got there Jon! They're so fat.
  13. I usually catch fish on a chatterbait by throwing it in and letting it sink to the bottom and just ripping it 2 times as hard as I can, reel the slack and rip it again hard as I can and just repeat that. Does really well for me on some places.
  14. I work at the UPS store ;D
  15. Make it into a fishtank.....anyone seen Grumpy Old Men?? The lady in that had a TV and turned it into a fish take. ;D
  16. 95% of the time I throw a GYCB flappin hog too RW. I never throw a jig without a trailer
  17. Looks like I'm gettin out tomorrow with my Dad for a couple of hours after school. I'll see if they're still on that bite, and try to get some pics.
  18. I will give that a try next time. We snapped a pic of the 2.5 lb smallmouth on my phone but Steve didn't save it :'( Next time ;D
  19. I was thinking about throwing a deep crank but I was just having to much fun catching them on the dropshot.
  20. Got out on the river today with my bud pigsticker. Started off extremely slow. Didn't even get a bite for 2 hours. Picked one up on a jig in about 8 feet of water right in front of the kennedy center and after that didn't get another bite for a good 40 minutes. We decided to move up to key bridge and try fishing around there, fished the VA side of the wall for a while then moved to the pylons where the bite REALLY picked up. I started with a jig and wasn't gettin bit then finally just said screw it and started tossin the drop shot. Got 3 bites from little pesky small mouth and didn't land any of them. I was gettin excited and reeling to fast I guess, or they were just so small but I decided on my next bite I'd just let it take it until I was positive it was hooked. Sure enough, next cast I got a bite. Let him take it and it turned out to be a beautiful 2.5lb smallmouth. After that I started catching them every ten minutes or so, sometimes consecutive casts. I was getting them on trick worms in junebug and a 1/4oz weight. I then switched to a black/blue reaction innovation beaver and the fish were just slammin them. Every cast I seemed to get a bite. I ended up with 11 smallmouth and 1 largemouth, and missed many more. Pigsticker had a bit harder time and came out with a goose egg today but he did miss a nice smallmouth that looked to be 2lbs. He beat me last time though so I'm sure he'll come back Great day overall. Matt Strykul
  21. Terminator, and evolution jigs for me. They have quality hooks and just flat out catch fish for me.
  22. I guess since he is postin a report on the canal I better post a report on the river yeah Steve?
  23. Dillinger caught the big fish, it was 5.3 lbs. Alot of guys including myself were catchin fish all day, but just nothin that big. Saw some beautiful smallmouth weighed in and nice sized keepers too. I was catchin em all day on jigs/ junebug trickworms on a shakey head but nothin of size. Biggest I caught was 2.5lbs. A great day of fishin overall.
  24. Fishing has been picking up down on Gaston. They are moving shallower for the fall feed, and we were catching fish along rip rap walls and off secondary points. Buzzbaits, carolina rigged brushhogs, and shaky heads were working out pretty well. We were finding fish in places that had greener grass than others.
