Need help frog fishing.
I was having the same issues earlier this year. Was using a 7-2 M/H rod, and just seemed to miss alot of fish. I bought a Dobyns Fury 735C, 7-3 Heavy with a fast tip, and my hookup ratios have soared. On open water I probably hook at least 90% of the fish, and on mats it's around the 70% range. But I am guessing alot of that is just the fish missing the frog. It sounds like you are doing the same tactics alot of us use. Let the fish have it and then cross those eyes. So it's just a matter of time before you have much more success ?

Popular baits you have given up on
See ya later Ned Rig and Wacky Worm. It's not that I don't catch fish here and there, just tired of always being hung up.

Popping or regular frog...
Maybe I am a little over simplified, but I like the poppers on open water and the regular frogs on mats. I can walk a popping frog just as well as a "standard frog" so on open water why not have a little chugging when ya need it.

Wheeler
I think it's way too early to declare Wheeler in the same breath as KVD and all the other giants of the sport this early in their respective careers, however he has had a tremendous start. It would be comparable to saying Tiger Woods was as good as Jack Nicholas after winning 4 or 5 tournaments. The field is very talented and could easily keep him from winning for long stretches at a time. But I will say he is fun to watch and it is amazing how much he has achieved already for his age.

Jumping ship?
Has anyone else noticed that Greg Hackney, Jason Christie and a few others are fishing BASS Opens and not the FLW Super tournaments? Possible precurser to going back? Anyone hear any rumors or info? I am pretty sure that Hackney could go back after paying the opt out contract fee since he was angler of the year.

Summer Froggin'
Is this a trick question? ? Finally was able to be on a lake last Monday that actually had pads and mats. Its been many years that I can recall where myself and a friend laughed and had such a great time fishing. Frog fishing was everything I was hoping it to be, and more ??

I am so addicted
To fishing frogs! I have talked about on other threads but the last 2 days on 2 different lakes (Rend Lake and Lake Kinkaid, Illinois lakes) were a blast! And almost all fish caught was on some kind of frog. Yesterday on Rend lake, I caught only 2 bass. The water was very choppy as a storm had just blown thru. However I found a stretch of Cyprus trees and caught a 1.5 and then..... A 5.7 Lb. Both on the Jackal Gavacho Charstick popper. I think my wife who was out just to be out riding around was more excited then I was ? Today on Kinkaid I took a buddy out, and started fishing rip raps points with alot of grass in front of them on the main lake. We were just smashing them. Both of us caught a few 3-3.5 lb fish and just had a great time. Today was a white leopard Booyah Pad Crasher. All I know is my wrist is very sore and I am now very addicted to that frog bite ?

Best hollow frog
Here is some frog fishing beginner perspective. I have only been fishing frogs for about a month. Why? Because where I live I don't have the big grass mats, Lily pads, and all that cool typical frog magic looking stuff. But I do have a friend that fishes them and I noticed he still catches fish on more open type water, so I have gave it a shot. Want to walk the frog? Shorter movements. I couldn't walk a frog to save my life until I shortened up. Now I can make it sit in place and walk back and forth. Took me about a week of practice so you can do it too.(my wrist is very sore) Popping frogs are easiest. Spro Bronzeye and Jackel Gavacho are very easy to walk.

BPT- Heavy Hitters
Good on Jordon to come back after what had to devestating the day before. I can't even imagine the emotions of having 50k slip your fingers with minutes to go. I did have fun with my buddy today who is absolute big time man crushed Jacob Wheeler fan. I had to ask..."Did Jacob forget to set his alarm today? Does he know he is in the Championship round? Or is he instead of Ding, is he just saying Dink ..dink....dink...all day long. ?

BPT- Heavy Hitters
11 minutes to go. Do you think Jordan is sweating bullets right about now.... ?

How much does the lure have to be worth before you'll go swimming?
Never for a lure, unless it's right there and I can see it and my plug knocker just refuses to do its job. I have had to swim after a guy who kept falling out of my boat....twice in one day. Yeah, I don't fish with him anymore...

BPT- Heavy Hitters
Jeff Kriet making a run at it today with an 8-02. KVD has his second 7-10 of the tourney.

Why So Many
I have actually started taking rods off my deck. I am trying a more simplistic approach this season. I am just going to have crankbait, creature, worm, jig and topwater. Oh, and one to make Hank Parker proud, a 5-6 pistol grip rod with a spinnerbait on it for some tight under hanging areas. No sissy spinning rods for me this year ? As a sidenote as I was taking them off the boat my wife made the comment that she was right and I did not need all those rods....

Frog Rod recommendation
Sorry if it's been asked before, bit I searched and did not really find what I was looking for. I just started fishing frogs alot, but I am using a M/H 7-3 rod and I am missing alot of strikes and not quite getting alot of solid hooksets when I do get them. (I do use braid, just seems to have but for a few times, maybe one hook on em) I am looking for a Frog Rod in the $100-120 ish range. I have looked at the Dobyns Fury 735c but I see that it has an extra fast tip and everything I have read and watched say the best set up is a heavy rod with a fast tip. So not sure if that is what I want. I am kinda wanting something in the 7-2 to 7-3 range. It will be paired with a Daiwa Tatula CT 7:3. Thanks in advance ?

Cooking
I over the last couple of years have been cooking outside with cast iron quite a bit. There is just me nothing going outside, starting a fire and cooking either over it or with coals with the cast iron. You get that feeling that the original poster was trying to convey of a small sampling of what the wagon train cooks did day in and day out. The guy I have been learning from is Kent Rollins. He still works for cowboys on the ranches and still uses the chuck wagons. You can follow him on YouTube. He has beat Bobby Flay twice, and is a hoot to watch.

Coolest thing you've ever witnessed while fishing?
A Bigfoot story eh? What? My dog story was not cool enough? ? Ok, here is his story, bit it has 3 acts to it. Act1: My friend, whose Native American name is "He Who Snags Everything", was out on his kayak at Washington County Park, which is near Nashville, Illinois. He had just caught a bass and released it (which honestly is the part of the tale I don't believe) when he got a strong uneasy feeling of being watched. He continues on for a few minutes when he says a really really bad odor hit him. He said it was very foul and almost made him puke. Suddenly he saw a large rock come flying out of the trees and land about 10 feet from his kayak. He looked up, and says there was the Foot just staring at him. The rest of the story is that he paddling like crazy to try and get back to the dock, but it was narrow stretch and the Foot was really close to him running along the bank yelling/grunting and tossing more rocks his way. When he finally got out of the cove he was able to shoot across the water, get to dock and book out of there. Act2: He went with some friends camping there in a cabin the following year at the same location. I personally did not know of this story yet, but he had told a few people about it. He told me when he actually told the tale that the reason he didn't talk much about it was for fear of ridicule. Anyways, while camping he was given the assignment of taking the garbage up the road to the trashcan. It was dusk.... As he was walking he heard a knock on a tree. He did not think nothing of it. Then he heard another knock. He stopped, looked around, and suddenly a rock came flying out of the woods, and he heard a loud growl. Bigfoot appeared off the trail 20 feet from him. Well, He Who Snags Everything took off like a shot back to the cabin, waving his arms everywhere and gibbered like a wild man that the Foot was after him again. And then.... Bigfoot walked out from around the cabin. He said he almost died right there of a heart attack..... But then Bigfoot took off his head, and lo and behold, he had been set up. His friends had purchased a Bigfoot costume. Act3: Last year they went out and took their sons with them. These children are between 5-8. Wanna guess what happened? You would be right! Only this time they did not reveal that they had a Bigfoot costume to the kids. The kids still talk about it to me to this very day....

Words Of Encouragement
Well, with my step sons, I had no luck. It's hot outside, or it might rain.... Name any excuse and they were just not interested. All they cared about was their phones and Xbox. I got to them too late sadly. However I was very encouraged this past weekend when I spotted a young man on his bike at Casey's. He had a backpack and 3 rods and he was headed to the town park lake. I asked nicely to leave some fish for me. He thought that was funny...? I went home, grabbed a few packs of worms, went to the lake and to his surprise.... Handed it to him. He asked me why I was doing it and I let him know. I said to him.... You are the coolest kid I have seen in a long long time! ?

What's your favorite
I don't bank fish very often anymore, but I do go out and toss something new in our towns small lake that is at the park. For example this week I went out and tried to figure out how to really walk a frog. But even when I just do that, I bring along a second rod and a small tote. The second rod is just to toss around a worm or pit boss so I don't go home skunked ?

Coolest thing you've ever witnessed while fishing?
I just pulled up on my favorite spot, and 2 labs came walking out of the weeds on the bank. They proceeded to jump in the water and swam to my boat. So there I am with 2 dogs sitting on my deck with no idea of where they came from or who they belonged to. About a half hour later I found the owner frantically looking for them farther down the bank. The dogs thanked me for my hospitality, jumped out of the boat and went back to their owner. Now my fishing partner will tell you a story he SWEARS by on his children's lives that he was chased by Bigfoot while he was in his kayak.
