Ever fished big saltwater ( 9" ) Sluggo's?
I am going to try some swimbaits this year on a local lake for big fish. I saw some big 9" Sluggo's the other day in rainbow trout color. These Sluggo's are the bigger saltwater version. I have used them in Alewive color for Stripers on the Chesapeake Bay but, has anyone used them for big green bass?

Drawbacks of EWG hooks?
I agree with RW and Alpster. I love EWG's for the simple fact that they are much easier to rig when going weedless. I have never broken one and I use Gammy's. I especially like the G-Lock hooks for flippin plastics such as tubes. I just bought some X-Points to try. I guess it is hard to break a hook on 8" fish though, lol.

balancing a rod
When I buy a rod I always ask if I can put my intended reel on so I can get a feel for it. I use the weight balancing kits you can buy ( it looks like the rubber on the end of a cane and comes with some lead punch outs) to balance my flippin sticks. A 7' or 7'6" MH or H action rod can be front heavy and I use the balance setup to make the tip of the rod float a little more. At least it helps me.

Yo-Zuri X-Tex Cobra
I tried it because I thought it would be a good flippin line. Yes, it certainly is strong or at least rated as strong over its line test but, very unmanageable.

To Tell or Not To Tell
Thanks Avid. I know nothing of Fork but, one of these years I will make the trip. I know every rock on the Susky around Harrisburg and the Upper Potomoc in MD because I have hit most of them one time or another, lol. If you are ever on the Susky look for dark gray paint on a rock and that is one of my holes. I wish all of you a great trip on Fork. It must be awesome. Is your timing on the trip due to the spawn? If it is I would bet you guys will catch some hogs. I will say one thing. I would be willing to bet that I will hear the laughter clear up here in Maryland while you all are there. Good luck.

Monster bass+pressured lake=HELP
Try a big 12" or 15" worm in Green Pumpkin, Red Shad , Watermelon/Red Flake, on a 1/8 oz bullet sinker, unpegged unless you are around wood. I have had a lot of luck over the years on these big worms. We have a few high pressure lakes near me especially the one up the street that is only 250 acres. Instead of switching to something smaller I went larger and have increased my bag significantly by doing so. You won't have the 15-20 fish days like some of the other guys but, it certainly ups the quality. I will stay with the 3 or 4 bites from good bass over the numbers. I will take two or three 4-6lb fish over twenty 12-14 inchers anyday.

To Tell or Not To Tell
Gee, thanks RW. That means a lot. A while back on a " Everything Else Post " , I recieved some emails that I had described in general in my " Can someone get your email " post. I recieved a couple since then and I am positive it was not from anyone in here, I guess. Anyhow, it just put a cloud over my giving my opinions on subjects in here. This is a fun site for me as well as educational. I am as guilty as the next guy because in my younger years I was hush, hush about certain holes on the river. I still have a few that are my spots that I know I can go and have a good chance at a trophy. All in all though I have reverted back to putting the fun back in fishing. There are some A-holes, that I would not give the time of day to but, there are a lot of good people out there that just want to learn. I am sure we all know both types. I enjoy learning new techniques as well as listening to other peoples points of view. I think it keeps us older guys from getting too set in out ways and improves our fishing. I will always read this post, and even though I will remain low key some subjects hit home and this was one of them. Good luck RW and I hope that #12 gets on the other end of your rod !!! I would say where you are fishing you have that chance. I think the next record will come either from your area, Great Lakes or one of the western impoundments. What say you?

To Tell or Not To Tell
I have five very close fishing buddies that I share with, as they do also. We keep it in our inner circle but, if I am on the water and I see some young guys or some old timers struggling or not fishing a good area I usually help them out. I watched a couple of young guys struggling the other year trying to fish a river hole that I knew was dead water and went over to talk to them and they said they heard about the Susque being so good and could not catch a thing. I told them to bank their boat and I took them to some spots and we ended up fishing all day and had a great day. They had fun, I had fun. Your personality really comes to light will you are on the water. In other words how you interact with your fishing and other people kind of reflects who you are in other aspects of life. Just by reading this post I can see some personalitys appear and get a pretty good feel of who these guys are. I just went through this giving secrets away problem on this site. Some people got a tude about me talking about the Susque but, you know what, screw them. I like to share in my older years. I won't post anymore about smallie fishing and such but, if I am on the river I will help all I can. There is a difference between a person guiding just for the money and the guy guiding for money as well as fun. I have been sitting back and just reading all the post but, I had to get my two cents in this one. Have a good day. IMO.

How can someone get your email address here?
Thanks for the kind words fellas. I received a few mails previously that were along the same lines that I ignored. They could not have been sent internally because my email was blocked so, it was just a few that I guess know who I am and aquired my address somehow. Like I said, I am going to continue to read the post on smallies. It is a wealth of information not only for the green horns but, for the experienced, as well. Anyone who fishes for smallies can tell you, they can be very unpredictable at times and do just the opposite of what you have previously experienced or read about. In my eyes there is nothing like a smallmouth. Riskkid, joining a club was a good choice.I expect you will learn a ton from your peers and if it is a sanctioned club and you chose to fish your state trail the info you will gain will be exponential. I belonged to a club for years and fished with some of the best in my state. A long time guide friend of mine whom died a few years back was one of the best smallie guides I ever knew and took me under his wing and showed me all he knew. He guided for names like Lefty Kreh ( well known fly fisherman ), Joe Gibbs ( ex Red Skins coach ), as well as many others. I was fortunate. He was uncanny in his approach to finding and catching big smallies. I had previously caught a ton of smallies before meeting this gentleman but, very few trophy smallmouth. I learned to even the odds and have since caught quite a few trophy smallmouth. I was fortunate enough to be left with a wealth of info that made me a better fisherman. I am still learning, and this should be the mind set of all of us. If there is a better way, show me, I say, I want to know. Good luck, I expect your enthusiasm will lend you to become a awesome fisherman.

How can someone get your email address here?
Yes, and I understand. I have seen this before in other venues. Its all top secret and its like you are bound to a vow of silence. Munkin said he ran into this before on another forum as well. I was positive that it did not come from this site as I checked my blocked email status. It was someone whom reads this forum. Whether it was a member or not, I would not know. I attempted a reply and was blocked. All they had to do is block my reply from their mailbox. Easy enough. Pretty cowardly though. It just shows the mentality of the individuals whom sent it. I like sharing what works for me as well as learn from others. I just feel gun shy as it made me wonder how I came across and how many others feel this way. Hell, I have had bad days fishing like everyone else. If you spent as much time as I have on these two rivers over the years you are bound to have learned the techniques and places to fish these bodies of water. You get to know the seasonal habits, how temps, high and low water affect them along with the info you get from your friends over the years, and it comes together. Like I said, I don't feel comfortable like I did in here before. This is a great forum and you all do a great job. Good luck, and thanks again.

How can someone get your email address here?
c312, I have only fished the Juanita from where it emptys into the Susquehanna up to the next ramp. I would say it would be good. They go into this river to spawn in late spring as well as feed early in the spring. There are quite a few creeks that empty into the Susque. that share the same influx. I have often wanted to go way up this river and fish. I would like to use a canoe or kayak and start maybe 20 miles up and fish my way down. I would say if you throw some tubes, grubs or small cranks you have a real good chance of waxing them. www.answers.com/topic/juniata-river

Thanks my friend. You live close to the Juanita? I put in at Duncannon in the later part of spring and the smallies get loaded up in the mouth of that river as well as the next creek down, Sherman Creek, you know where I mean. A few years back I had a clients grandson catch a 5+ up the Juanita a piece on his first throw of the morning and it was the morning of his 12th birthday !!!. Pretty nice way to start your b-day. It was pretty cool as well as memorable.

Thanks replica, I appreciate that. I am just going to watch the smallie post, learn some things and sip on my coffee. Happy fishing. I hope your rods stay bent with big smallies.

Reds hooks vrs Normal color
I never used them. One of my friends has red hooks on everything, I think he even painted his zipper red on his pants, lol. When we fish together I never noticed him out fishing me in any noticeable way. But, I sure have to listened to it when he does get a bite. " You need red hooks he always proclaims ". Yea, I need a date with Jessica Alba too, but, thats not going to happen either.

Frozen Guides
I use Reel Magic for the guides and a couple of shots of Captain Morgan for me when I get home. Only a couple though. More than three and my brain freezes up.

Husky Jerk vs. X-Rap
Thanks ghoti, sounds to me this " slash " bait will be a new welcome addition to my smallmouth arsenal. Long casting, erratic action sells me. Thanks again.

Yea Munkin, I guess you are right. I tried this forum stuff and I don't think it is working out for me. I just figured that as many years and as much time as guys like you,me and the rest of our friends had on the Susquehanna and Upper Potomoc that it would be a great venue to help some of the younger guys out. Hell, I don't mind sharing my holes and such. I thought it would be fun to take some people out on the Susky for smallies and let them have some of those 80-100 or so smallie days that never did it before. I had guys at the ramp ask how many we had in the winter and I would say 60 or so and they would say, " yea, right, we only had 8 or so". I say heck with them. I am going to take my trips for money, fish with the same old guys and move on. Let them have those 10 fish days. Those emails left a bad taste in my mouth. Anyhoo, are you going to the fishing flea market next Sat.? If so I will see you there. I need some tubes. Gary Seavolt will be there. He has been making some awesome jigs. I am tired of making them. I am going to check his out. I guess the whole gang will be there. All of us no fishing &^%$$%^&%$&^&* river guides and fisherman ;D. See ya there.

Husky Jerk vs. X-Rap
I love throwing Husky Jerks in clear and cold water. I never threw a X Rap. I thought these two baits were similar but, acted very differently. Fill me in if you would. I am clueless to these baits but, they look awesome.

Yes, I thought as much. I should have never posted my name I guess. I know a lot of people in our little smallmouth world in PA and MD. It could have been anyone. I only opened them, LBH, because it mentioned this site and me. Hey, maybe I will rename myself as " The Guru",lol. Oh well, live and learn.
