When you pause the jerk bait for long periods, leave it on a slack line. I was afraid to do this at first, thought I wouldn't be able to feel the bite. Then a 9" crappie about pulled me off the front of the boat. It is quite surprising how hard they hit it

Yes it is normal for the lake to be down. They drop it 20 to 30 feet every year starting around August 1 . It can be a great bass lake from what everyone says but I have never fished it much. There are lots of big tournaments Even bassmaster

i haven't fished it myself recently but heard of a 19lb bag winning a tourney the other day. On into the cold winter it's usually well up into the 20s to win a tourney. Sounds like spots are still being caught deep with electronics, but that's about all the good info I have heard. Some folks still night fishing too, water temp mid 60s. You can still fish Boone even though it's down, they even added 3-4 new ramps for the low water level

I've been know to wear pants like that to work or fish, old timer one time told me my pants were "starvation badges!" Hahahahha. As long as you acquired the holes in your pants from a hard days work I consider it acceptable

I don't know the reason but the free stone streams in late fall are tough fishing for smallmouth in my neck of the woods also. Tailwaters are still fish decent but reservoirs fish better and better the colder it gets. Some of the best smallmouth fishing we have around here is during the worst cold/wind/rain/snow weather

South Holston fishes much better in the winter, lot of 20+ lb bags of smallmouth are weighed in there when it's super cold

You could always take the fish that died home to eat. When slinging hooks into the water, eventually it will happen. Don't feel bad
