Catfishing in NE Kansas
The fence is only at the outlet entrance, where the current is strongest. There is decent bank access beyond the fence, but you may be competing with several other fishermen. Shad stack up just below the outlet. Predators are usually close by. If the catfish are not biting, there are plenty of white bass hanging out. The marina area usually has a few fish this time of year. Water is usually fairly warm there also. La Cygne is loaded with catfish. Had my boat in the outlet last fall. There were so many baby catfish, I probably could have walked on them. I don't fish for them, but catch plenty while bass fishing. There are giant flatheads in that lake.

Towing 21' bass boat with midsize truck
I pull a z175 ranger with a Chevy Colorado. The total boat trailer package weighs in at a little under 3000 lbs. The truck is putting out 310 horsepower and has a 7500 pound towing capacity. It also has a towing package. Trailer also has surge brakes The truck handles my 17 foot 10 inch boat fine. I would not want to pull much more. Even though the truck is rated for quite a bit more, I don't think the engine and transmission would last long. Plus even with trailer brakes a small truck pulling a large boat, can be dangerous when trying to stop in a hurry.

Trying to decide on a jerkbait rod, looking for advice
I have used a lot of different rods for jerkbaits. as mentioned above money alone does not make a good jerkbait rod. Super sensitivity is less important to me than balance. Plus the high end rods don't always take impact well. A middle ground jerkbait rod will take an occasional slap on the the boat better than the super high modulus rods. My current favorite is a 6ft. 8in. Okuma evx medium/ fast action rod. it balances well and sits in the middle for jerkbait rods. it casts a vision 110 easily, and can also handle the heavier deep diving jerkbaits. I think it cost around $110.00 at tackle warehouse.

Helix trolling motor compatibilities
If you get an Ultrex and plan on using the built in transducer for di and si, make sure you buy the motor with correct transducer. There are a few different options.
-
Helix trolling motor compatibilities
The 2d transducer in an ultrex is a universal transducer. It will work with multiple brands. As I stated above, if you want to use built in imaging transducers . Either down or side. It will have to be with a hummnigbird
-
Trolling motor orientation
It is all personal preference. When I am on the water it is usually prop out. Water from prop runs back into lake instead of my carpet. If I am towing the boat it is prop in. Just in case I have to use the tarp.
-
Helix trolling motor compatibilities
Minn Kota was the first trolling motor to have spotlock. the ultrex is a proven motor. I have owned two of them. A lot depends on what you have. stating you have a helix 12 is pretty vague. is it a g2, g3, or g4n.. does it have down imaging, side imaging, or just 2d sonar. if you are looking to use any imaging with the trolling motors built in transducer It will have to be a minn kota. Otherwise you will have to mount an external transducer on the other brands.

What the ideal Daiwa SV reel for Crankbaits
My sv reels are reserved for bottom contact baits and skipping. If I am chucking crankbaits I switch to a tatula 100. Still has a t-wing. Not as forgiving on backlashes, but it will smoke my sv reels on distance. If you are using braid to leader,(Honestly don't know why anybody does that for crankbaits), the fuego is a good option. It has no t-wing If I am fishing crankbaits. It is either straight fluoro or mono. Don't see any benefit of braid to leader for that application.

Need Advice, First Time Cleaning Baitcasting Reel
Unless you got a huge discount from bass pro shops for buying a used reel. I would have returned it right after you noticed used line on the reel. As mentioned above you are likely past the return time with bass pro. I would contact Garcia to see if their warranty is still valid. there is a one year "limited" warranty for the original purchaser. If it was used when You bought it, there is no warranty. here is a link to their warranty site. https://www.abugarcia.com/pages/abugarcia-warranty good luck. in the past my success with abu's limited warranty was spotty.

Sougayilang
For their price. is the key statement. If you fish occasionally they are fine. At one time I had 8 kast king combos. I know own zero. They worked fine for the first year. After that bails broke, gears wore out, rods snapped fighting fish, etc. I fish around 120 days a year. They did not holdup to constant use.

Sougayilang
More than likely of the same quality as other plastic reels. Like Kast king and piscifun. Functional for occasional use, but not built to last.

What is this fish?
if you use an electric filet knife, the red meat can easily be left behind when you remove the filet from the skin. if fileted correctly white bass make the best filets for fish tacos.

What is this fish?
Clear Lake in northern Iowa has a huge population of yellow bass. the spawning run is a big deal there and attracts a ton of fishermen. a couple of my relatives make the trip from eastern Iowa to join in on the action. They bring hundreds of fish back. Personally, I never felt the need to fight the crowds for a smaller version of a white bass, but to each their own.

Retirement Suggestions Please
This is so true. nearly any place has at least a few good fishing spots . I never expected to end up retired in Eastern Kansas, but here I am. while it is by no means a fishing mecca, there is enough decent fishing around the area to keep me busy.

Dobyns rod true purpose.
A thread whose only purpose is to irritate others. What a pleasant contribution to bass fishing. Looks like someone needs to get out of the house and go fishing.

What is this fish?
^^^^this. Here in Kansas they are considered a nuisance fish. the state asks that we do not release them.

I need some help with a flipping rod.
Nearly any heavy/fast action 7.5 foot rod will work. I prefer it to be light, so it does not wear me out after hundreds of pitches. I am 100% against braid for flipping and pitching in wood.... It has poor abrasion resistance and is noisy when your line is sliding over wood. Braid works great in grass. The rougher texture will cut through weeds better than smooth line. To me a good abrasion resistant fluorocarbon line in 20 to 25 pound is ideal for pitching wood. Besides the abrasion resistance. The sensitivity of semi slack fluorocarbon is a bonus, since most of your bites are on the initial fall. More than likely you will be doing more actual pitching than flipping. I see very few people flipping anymore.

Anyone Use A Lure Retriever?
I have both. The pole always gets used first if I can reach the bait. I had a knocker hit the side of my fiberglass boat, at warp speed, one day. When i was trying to free a jerkbait from a shallow brushpile. I still can't believe it did not put a hole in my boat. after that I only use the knocker in deep water.

Fishing Tackle has been wiped out from stores.
Bass Pro, Cabelas and Scheels all have decent stock here. Dicks in our area has turned into soccer mom stores. For whatever reason Academy has not done well keeping their shelves stocked. Heaviest Action Spinning Rod You Use For Bass ?
I love my baitcasters. I only use a spinning rod for finesse baits. Medium/fast is my heaviest spinning rod. generally ned rig, shakyhead, neko rig, small jerkbaits or light crankbaits get spinning tackle. there are usually around 16 combos in my boat at any point in time. there are never more than 3 spinning combos.
-
shakey heads
skakyhead is a semi weedless version of a ballhead. it generally does not have a 90 degree head, so it goes across rocks and light cover better. It is designed to fish on bottom. Most of the shakyhead jigs only standup if they are moving. In regards to a ned rig standing up, most people use some type of slow swimming retreive. if you are constantly bouncing the bottom with a ned rig, plan on having a lot of spares.

What’s the last rod/reel you purchased that you ended up regretting?
Kast king speed demon Shakyhead rod with a Kast king speed demon spinning reel. Bail bearing locked up after 6 months. Once I freed the bearing, the gears stripped on a three pound wiper. put on a new Diawa reel and 2 months later the tip broke off of the rod fighting a fish. Learned my lesson on that brand. If it was the only one, I would have thought no big deal. I shredded a speed demon casting reel. and 3 speed demon pro rods. If you fish a few times a year they are ok. I fish around 200 days a year. I drank the kool aid when everyone was pumping up Kast King. I was looking for a few moderate priced rods and reels to fill my arsenal. Unfortunately I learned my lesson the hard way. Back to Diawa without looking back.

That weird color of soft plastic that surprised you?
Morning dawn. it is basically a combo of purple and pink. Z man calls it twilight. First time i saw it, I thought this color will not catch fish. it is now one of my most used colors for trick worms and ned baits.

Live target bait ball
I agree they are great at catching fishermen. This is one guy who has moved on to other baits.
