Bolt cutter
Are you looking at these to cut hooks? I was using a pair of mini bolt cutters from Tekton, I’m sure the Knipex are better quality but pretty expensive. I find a pair of Dykes designed to cut wire like the S2000 series from Klein, work best for me. I ended up putting the nice Kleins in my toolbox after cutting hooks for awhile with no damage and picked up a pair of Doyle brand from harbor freight. Works great for me and $20. I can get further into the fishes mouth to the entry point of the hook with these. I haven’t cutting any heavy punch hooks with them but they cut heavy wire ewg hooks no problem! Haven’t had to cut hooks much , thankfully. But once and awhile they come in handy.

Shimano Curado's lineage PDF/Spreadsheet
Just from my semi young but foggy memory I believe there was: 1989ish (grey colored magnetic brake Curado) I believe only produced one year. 1990 or so (red tomato) 1994 (200b “greenie”) I think this reel was made until 2008 or so in some markets. 2002 + or - a yr (100b) 2004 (200bsf) 2006/7 D series 2008/10 E series 2012 G series 2014/15 I series 2018 K series 2023 M series This is loosely accurate

HELP. Casting rod decision over load!!!
The SC premier is a very well made rod and would fit the bill if you like a more traditional styled rod. However, the triumph is essentially the same rod except for the fact it is made in St. Croixs own Mexico factory instead of WI. I have enjoyed my premier rods and they have stood the test of time, mine have some age on them now. My triumph is just as nice though, to me. Same 5yr warranty for both. For $20 less I would consider the Falcon EVO also, excellent rod for $80, with Fuji components, a 5 yr warranty, and a traditional look. Some 6-6” to 7’ rods in this series also. St. Croix customer service/warranty is hard to beat as well is Bass Pro Shops. Decisions, decisions.

HELP. Casting rod decision over load!!!
I believe the Johnny Morris rods are made by Virtus rod in Arkansas. There might be a parent name not sure. They sure are lightweight when I looked at the store also, but no experience with them otherwise. What model St. Croix are you eyeballing? I find the Victory series to have a very lightweight blank, I’m pretty fond of them, comparing them to rods that cost more.

Choosing a good all rounder reel, Curado MGL and Tatula SV TW top choices
I can comment on Tatula SV and Curado MGL150. Both are nice reels but to me the SV is way over braked, uncomfortable in my hand, and I don’t like the location of the cast control as I would bump it out of adjustment often. A lot of people like these reels, but they are not for me. The Curado fits my hand like a glove, is butter smooth, and casts/skips/pitches with ease. I do feel it’s the most well rounded baitcaster I’ve owned.

Sharpie your line?
I agree with the thought that if you think it matters then it probably does. I can see flouro in clear water on a bright sunny day. Maybe a sharpie on flouro would help it camouflage with the water you are fishing haha.

SLX XT
If the xt is anything like the mgl it’s awesome! My favorite reels under $200. I agree the frame profile is very similar to the old school E series, which were excellent reels.

Thoughts and opinions on the Abu Garcia Veritas rods.
At $100 they are decent. The plx has the best blank out of all the veritas rods produced over the years, in my opinion. I have the 6’9” mh and it fishes true to rating. Unfortunately the locking nut cracked on a hookset. Why every rod manufacturer can’t use a Fuji ecs reel seat (bulletproof) is beyond me. Falcon uses one in all their rods and to me it’s a huge selling point.

How many rods and Whats on them?
From a Kayak 2, one MH baitcaster one spinning. Bank fishing two max. Usually a couple MH baitcasters. wading I take one, often a spinning rod. In the boat I should only take 5. I could cover the spectrum. Right now I have 12 and need to do some culling. I never fish better with more setups to choose from. Fishing as a backseater, it depends. Fun fishing I’ll take 3, tournament fishing I’ll take 5.

Man, I Cant Catch A Bass On _______
Im not big on: whopper plopper chatterbait hard jerkbaits drop shot I’ve caught fish on these lures just not enough to sneeze at. I understand the differences but I’d rather throw a: buzzbait spinnerbait fluke ned rig I think confidence in a particular lure is the biggest thing. Sometimes I wish someone would take all my lures away and leave me with some worm hooks, a tub of senkos and my jig box, I’d be happy.

If you were buying a dedicated frogging reel…
I was going to suggest a Curado dc haha! A Curado 200m is great also, even beefier than the previous K. A Tatula 150 is a great frog reel also, but I know a new one is coming out with that CT frame. I used a Fuego ct for awhile also and had no issues. All I buy now are 8.1 reels and I have no issues.

Carolina Rigs for Smallmouth Bass?
It still works. I like them on sand drops but I use a small craw on mine.

B.A.S.S. / Bassmaster thoughts?
I few years ago I bought a life membership for fairly cheap at the time. I figured it’s worth it for me. I love bassmaster, and yes the magazine is still good, but a lot more advertising these days. I would say the BASS times newspaper is even better.

Shimano Reel Help
One would sure think so, but I’ve never had an issue. I have 20+ year old Curados that also have one brake pin out on the VBS system and have been that way a long time.

What rod for a SXL 70 8:1?
I fish Texas rigs and swim jigs with mine. I’ve also thrown jerkbaits, and crank baits, just turn the reel handle slower. They are great reels, I like 30lb braid on mine.

Shimano Reel Help
If one was flipped up, that’s ok. I have reels I have setup like that.

St. Croix LTB Dock Sniper
I have never fished that model but have held it comparing it side by side with the 7’4” H in the mojo bass line, previous generation. My impression was that the dock sniper was lighter in hand and a bit lighter in power. Another guy in my club does use the dock sniper in LTB as his primary jig rod. He has the mojo also and said both fish very similar. He fishes a lot of weedlines with big jigs and braid. The other guy I fish with uses the Mojo bass model with 15lb fluorocarbon fishing a 1/8oz bitsy bug jig, yes 1/8oz. He catches a lot of fish and good ones but I notice that his cast is more of a lob than anything. Thats all I got, hope it helps a bit.

Walmart rods and Amazon/Aliexpress reels
Nice review! I have 3 of the 7’mh HP Lews rods as well as the 6’10” m casting and spinning. I like em’. I’ve used the MH models for jigs, frogs, t rigs, buzzbaits, big spinnerbaits/a-rigs. I have Abu max stx reels on mine with 15lb big game. They share the same space in my rod locker as my Shimano/st. Croix combos. I have the lightning rod in 7’ M with Abu max x and 12lb big game. This is my trap/crankbait rod and works perfect.

Favorite tackle shop?
We have Butches archery. They have a nice selection of tackle also and is by far the best shop close by me. Eagle River, Minoqua, Tomahawk all have nice shops that I stop at when I’m up that way. Sturgeon Bay has a particular gas station that is loaded good with hot tackle specific to the bay. Bobs bait and tackle was always good, out of LaCrosse, used to have a shop in Green Bay but closed years ago. The Reel Shot may be the best small shop in our state right now. They have a strong selection, and high end also. They are in Appleton and Oshkosh. The shops I’ve been to down south are on a different level. Even lake guntersville areas Walmarts fishing section next level.

Step up from the SLX XT
Curado 150mgl is an excellent reel. I’d go with that one.

What's your best bassin' skill? And your worst?
Best: Anything that involves putting a jig or soft plastic into cover. Having the accuracy and equipment to place a lure and extract the bass is most important for this. The accuracy part is just practice. Worst: decision making. I get these “gut” feelings I need to move when I know the fish are where I’m already at.

Current Favorite Braid for Froggin’ ?
I am trying smack down right now for frogs, it seems good. I’m also trying the 8 carrier XPS bass pro shops braid and that stuff has been great! Inexpensive, good overall performance, no complaints at all. I still love power pro and it’s a go to line for me. Another that I like that you don’t hear much about anymore is Tufline XP, similar to power pro in feel and performance.

Can bass see my braided line? Does it matter?
I use a lot of braid also. I no longer use flouro at all an notice no change in bites. I do use yo zuri hybrid and big game for some applications. David Fritz, one of the world’s most renowned crankbait fishermen uses braid for his cranks. I do not usually but I have and it works well with a soft rod. Funny enough, I’m not afraid to use straight braid with topwater and traps? No issues, so why not use it for other cranks? On a square bill I have my reasons why, but it can for sure work. I also use it for jigs/plastics, love it!
