Re: Depth Finder
EAGLE FISHMARK 320. Or if you have the money, go with the 480. When I searched for mine, I had similar requirements, and everyone led me straight toward that one. And I LOVE it. Best bang for the buck IMHO.

I need a job.
I would love to make french fries. And believe me, I have looked into stuff like that. It is just we have to many older people. I am being outsourced by 17 year old punks, who wear their pants at their knees, and have no work ethic. Age shouldn't be used the way people use it. Just ain't right. I know there are jobs for me, I just need to think outside the box in order to find them. Right now, that box seems to be duct taped shut - with my thoughts inside.

I need a job.
For those of yall who don't know, I am 14, and live in Ga. I love buying fishing stuff and broken boats, and OMC outboards. But, I have no financial backing. My parents cant help, as we are in the aftereffects of having owned 2 400,000 dollar houses for 3 years. Add on other medical crap and such, and we stuck in a bind. I take every job I can get, but they are few and far between. In this modern world, someone in my position needs to think outside the box, and I am not thinking far enough. I don't mind work, and used to have a great job, (I refereed soccer at the church for 15 bucks an hour. Could work 4 hours in a saturday, and about 10 saturdays in a year. But now, they don't offer this job to kids anymore) Every spring and fall, my boy scout troop sells pinestraw, and sometimes I can get paid to spread it. But, my trolling motor killed that paycheck. I take every odd job I can get, no matter how hard it is, and how underpayed I am. I can afford to do this, as I have time, as no one has time to take me fishing (I consider myself REAL lucky to get out once a month) I can use that time to at least make SOME money. I need to find other jobs, no matter what they are (so long as they don't involve children. I draw the line there) and no matter how much they make. I need help thinking outside the box. What do yall think I should look into? And, of the younger guys on here, what do yall do?

Hooking up a trolling motor on a 16' jon boat
Oh, and put a 40 amp fuse somewhere between the two.

Hooking up a trolling motor on a 16' jon boat
Are you gonna just be running the trolling motor off that battery, or something else as well? What says you cannot put the battery in the back? If you move the battery to the stern, and you have enough length on the TM lead, just change the end to ring terminals, and attach to wing nuts on battery. If the leads are not long enough put a plug on it, and run 6 gauge wire from the battery to the plug. If the battery has to stay in the bow, forgo the plug you have completely. Now, run 4 gauge directly from the battery to the plug on the trolling motor lead. Make sure the plug is suitable for 4 gauge, or it will be a limiting factor, and you will lose power.

How to fund your first boat?
Here is the weight stack up of mine. 12 foot Vee - 100 ish pounds. Evinrude 4 horse deluxe - 50 pounds. I believe many 9.9 - 15 motors are 70 - 85 pounds, so you get the picture. 6 gallon gas tank with 3 - 5 gallons of gas at 7 pounds a gallon. 20 - 35 pounds. 50 # thrust MK powerdrive - 30 ish pounds. Group 27 trolling battery - 70 pounds. wiring/lights and other stuff that stays in the boat when on the trailer (paddles, seats etc) - less than 30 pounds. Trailer - 200+ pounds. Mine weighs more than most should. It was made in the 50s out of some thick walled water pipe. Typical Jon boat trailer should be less than 150. Add this up, and I come to about - 500 ish. If you get a 14 or 16 footer with a bit of a larger motor, I doubt you would go over 700 or 800 pounds. I see people pull larger boats with 4 banger rangers.

How to fund your first boat?
Well, "our" first boat was a 1974 Lund fish n ski that we bought about a year and a week ago. We bought it as a restoration project, and have spent about 3000 on it. 3000 spread over the period of a year. Of course, we didn't skimp on anything. Unfortunately, we have run into some major time restraints, and the restoration has gone over schedule by about nine months. "My" first boat (I am 14) is a 1997 12 foot Grumman vee with a 1988 4 horse Evinrude. I bought it with money I have earned in the past few years working on this and that (never at my house. I get food and shelter for working at home) I have also gotten an Eagle fishmark 320 fishfinder, and a 50 pound MK powerdrive. All of which, I bought used. The key is to buy used, and don't exceed your limit. I fish Allatoona with it, and I believe allatoona is 11,000 acres. I can fish with the big boys just fine.

What's a must-have in a fishing boat?
A DRAIN PLUG!! After that, I would say a motor, a trolling motor and a fishfinder. The casting decks and all are nice, but I can catch fish out of my 12 foot vee with 4 horse Evinrude. I fish Allatoona in it with the big boys. The only thing I would change is to put a bigger motor on the transom. 5 mph is a bit slow for an 11,000 (I think, may be bigger) lake.

Considering buying a boat...
Set a max and stick to it. And remember, it is not just the cost of the boat. Then, there are safety items, modifications and stuff. Plus plenty of beer. If you are looking at a jon boat, the things you should look at don't go much beyond does the motor run (if one is included) and are there any fiberglass patches. Some patches are okay, but not Fglass ones. With a bigger boat, there is a lot to look for, so you should probably take a friend who knows what the heck he is looking at.

PFD's, what're you using ??
Call me weird, but I prefer a neoprene ski jacket. Yes, it is heavy, but it is rather flexible, and dries off faster than a nylon one. Much more comfortable IMHO. I am 14, and whenever in the boat alone, I will have mine on. That is the dads rule, and even if it weren't I would. I also wear the kill switch when alone, even though that is not dads rule. Since the only running boat (We are also restoring an old Lund) is a 12 footer with 4 horse Evinrude, the pfd stays on even when fishing with dad. When we do finish the Lund, I will probably wear it when running, and maybe not so much when fishing. I occasionally mean to take it off in the 12 footer, but forget as it is real comfortable.

Your Worst Fishing Injury
One time my friend and I were fishing about 4 miles below the dam of allatoona. I was tempted to wade out there for a while. Luckily I didn't. About 5 mins later, the dam opened up. Cannot here sirens down that far. It rose 3 feet in a matter of seconds, and moved so fast, my two ounce pyramid sinker wouldn't hit bottom. Now, 3 miles down from the dam is a 12 ish foot high spillover dam. Above it is commonly used for fishing from jon boats. Dad is never worried about going out when we don't know about power release. He has never seen the dam open up it seems. No way I would be out there in a jon boat, with moving water that strong and fast. In a canoe, starting out below the spillover dam I would, but not a jonboat. Ya know, I am always griping about how I never get to fish. Once a month AT THE VERY BEST. Went from October to February, and down in GA everyday is a day for fishing, as the water never gets much below 40, and we don't have ice. Well, the less I fish, the less I get injured. I think the worst was when I got stung by 2 yeller jackets in the flesh between toes.

Installing a bilge system....questions
You should be fine with manual. Automatic is required if you are gonna be mooring for a while. With manual, you have to see that there is water in the boat, and go to the trouble of hitting a on/off switch. IMHO, go with a manual. You could probably get by with a 250 gph as well. It is not like you are taking waves over the bow in an electric only lake. You can mount it with the hose discharging over the side. But, the higher the pump has to push it, the less efficient it is.

rough water tips
Well, dad and I have been in 3 foot waves in a 12 foot vee. Well, semi vee. It is a vee bow, with a square bottom at the stern like a jon. Seeing since we had two people, we went into the waves and the bow would slice through them and we would then rise up on top. Actually wasn't that bad aside from the d*** wind. When we had to go transom to the waves, we went at a bit of an angle and would wallow up and over it. Tedious, but we were fine. A bit back, it was just me in it. With that, the bow is high, and the vee is out of the water. Mostly a jon boat. I come around a main point, and their is a large jet ski towing another large one at just below planing speed. Golly, they throw a HUGE wake if connected together. About 3 1/2 feet. Almost lost a rod. Even though the vee was out of the water, it sliced through it a bit, and threw the bow up in the air. I couldn't see any water over the nose. The bow was up in the air until the wave was almost directly under me. Then, I came down hard on the next wave. Hit it with the flatbottom part. Hit it hard. Threw a lot of stuff around. Then, I rode the rest okay, as they were smaller. It was most definitely easier with the weight in the bow, and the vee cutting through the wave. In a jon style, I wouldn't try it. I am still wondering how I managed to catch that rod.

Motors
9.9 to 20 or whatever the boat is rated for. You could get away with more than the rating, but it is not needed. You will get there in reasonable time with a 9.9. A 15 might be perfect. If the boat is rated for more, and you can afford it, go for it. If not, a 9.9 will make ya move.

AOL is THE WORST!
We had it when we first got our computer. (in 2000. We were the last to get one) We kept it for a few years after that. We HATED it. Then, we got joi internet, and loved it, aside from being dialup. But, that was all we had, and didn't really know there was better. Well, then joi was sold to earthlink, and we hated them. So we went with adelphia high speed cable internet. Loved it. Learned how important that really was. faster, doesn't tie up phone lines. Learned what we had missed. Recently adelphia was sold to comcast (at least down here it was) and we don't hate comcast, but it ain't completely foolproof/reliable. It has its blips a good bit. At first they were fairly common, due to the software changing, just now, it will not load, or not connect to internet, even though everything is plugged in and reads full output.

bass seat in canoe
On our jon boat, we have bass style seats, with swivel bases. The swivel base is bolted to a piece of 3/4 inch ply wood with countersunk tee nuts. Therefore, it doesn't scratch the main seat. Then, we attach to the bench seat via ratchet straps. 100% adjustable, and very sturdy, and doesn't drill holes in the boat.

Jon Boat question
It works fine. Most Vee hull utility boats are bare on the outside. You probably wont get the shine like it has from the factory. Will look just like any piece of aluminum you find at the steelyard as opposed to the shiny aluminum boats.

Question About Fishing License
That seems a bit overboard. I know in NC and Ga you will just get a ticket. In SC, you will get a BIG ticket. Have a teacher who go fined 800 bucks once. He was just passing through SC, and decided his boat was to dry for its own good, so dunked it in.

Is my boat good enough
Does it float, and run, and have a livewell? If yes, go fishin'. I assume you are 13. I am 14, and at the beginning of the year (I was 13 at the time) I bought a 12 foot grumman vee, and Evinrude 4 horse deluxe. It floats, and runs. Sure it is slow, and I am looking for a little more HP because my home lake is fairly big. Lake Allatoona for yall who know the area. But, it catches fish (or should - I think the error is on my end of the rod) Now, I am not the only person in the house who fishes, but dad has very little spare time, due to the issue he is stuck in with his job and other finances. We also have a 1974 Lund fish n ski with 50 horse johnny that we are restoring. We have the ability to restore it just fine, but again, lack the time and money to get it done in a reasonable amount of time. We have owned it for a year minus about 4 days, and are only about halfway done on the restore, but we are getting there. I would give a lot to be in your place. Pretty nice daggum boat there, and at 13 (I am assuming that is how old you are, if you aren't, I apologize) if you are considering fishing tourneys, I feel you are doing pretty darn good. I would be dam proud of myself to catch a single fish on a trip. (Haven't caught anything since October. Course, I have only been out about 5 times since then, and I live down here in Ga where the water temp never gets much below 40, and it is never too cold to fish. Cannot blame lack of water time on ice or other natural crap. I am thinking the 5 trips since Oct. is the main issue. Very little on the water experience. I could care less what type of boat I own, at this time, all I care about is getting on the water time, and I lack a lot of that, and really wish I didn't. Your doin' good. Get out and fish the tourneys!!

Older two stroke motors and TCW-3 2 stroke oil?
http://www.tcoutboard.com/ I have heard this place to be real good. People who have been there in person say that the mountain of outboards seen on the way in is amazing. Worth a whole trip if you are anywhere in the northern section of the country. I have personally emailed them a few questions and they are really nice people.

Virginia Safe Boating Classes
In Ga the requirements are: If you are 12 or 13, you can operate anything under 30hp with either a) boaters safety course or b)an adult within 300 yards. 14 or 15 and you can operate any hp with either the course or the supervision. I think they should change it to all boaters. Especially the PWCs. I made an 92 as well. Again, 2 PWC questions, and one other was the life jacket age. I thought everybody under 12 had to have one whenever underway. It was ten. I think that should be counted - as I was actually being safer. Although, down here in GA, it took 15 bucks and 20 minutes to do it on the computer.

Mixing Oil and Gasoline for two strokes.
Do you mean 2 - 3 Years? 2 - 3 years if used regularly, because it will just wear out from pumping so much water. 2 - 3 months if sitting because once the impeller gets wet, it needs to stay wet, and can dry out and crumble after a couple months.
-
Mixing Oil and Gasoline for two strokes.
How long has it been since the motor was last run? If more than 2 - 3 months, then you NEED to change the impeller. Don't worry, it is easy, and the part is not expensive.

Need woman help.
Alright, here is my problem. I am 14, 6 days of 8th grade left. Just "asked out" a seventh grader. My sister is in seventh grade, and I got her to tell her friend that I like her. Now, I am shy, and not all that social. She is shy too. I know I need to talk to her a bit, but the shyness trait comes in (with the last girl I "asked out" I put a card in her locker on valentines day in 6th grade. Then, we said NOTHING for about a year and a half. Then it was out of necessity more than anything else. Finally we started talking freely about feb. of 8th grade. But still only in a deserted hallway or something. Never really around people.) I don't want that to happen again. I don't mind talking if they start the conversation, but am too shy to start one myself. She is most definitely too shy to start one. My main question is, does it seem decent to email her, or should I suck up my guts, and attempt to speak? If yall say yes to emailing, what should I say? At school, since she is a grade lower and we see each other only during band class, where it is only feasible to talk in the time we put instruments back on the shelves in the instrument closet. Doesn't leave much time for me to suck up my guts and pull start my mouth. I am totally abnormal, but I know that matters not. There are women in this world who would prefer a date at the scrapyard, or BPS, or Tractor Supply Company as opposed to some fancy dinner or cinema. Just gotta find em, and that involves talking to them, and there inlies the problem. BTW, she owns a lake up in Tennessee (well her parents do). I do know that they go there fairly often. Of course, even though she is my sisters friend, once my sister learned I liked her, my sister wont speak anymore. I can't figure out what they do at the lake - ski, fish, swim, etc. Is this typical female behavior to not tell older brother about her friend? I mean I can't find out even where she lives by checking the phone book, as her last name is Carter, and I live in Cartersville. Whole d*** phone book page for Carter. My sister wont even tell her dads first name.

Any Bow hunters here?
I have shot bows for a while. Or at least untill about 3 years ago when we moved to the city. Didn't have the time or space to shoot here. I would really like to be able to shoot again, and have been wanting to be able to hunt, but right now we don't have the time or money.
